View Full Version : Powerful monsters of the Plant type?

Does anyone have suggestions for big, tough plant monsters? Not the small but deadly ones, but the gigantic ones that are about as subtle as a brick wall and are a tough challenge for a mid-op or slightly high-op party.

Note: I mean practical optimization levels. This is a thought exercise, but please refrain from using anything you wouldn't use as a DM.

The Night Twist (MM3) was always the gold standard for the Salad Bar Warforged Monk due to its stupid high strength. (30 IIRC)

Greenbound Creature template, Lost Empires of Faerun. Just apply it to a physically powerful creature like a Giant, Ettin, Gray Render, etc. Any creature that spent an extended period of time among the enchanted ruins may have been transformed into one, then wandered off or even been summoned by someone with the appropriate feat. I'd use something that can benefit from the +4 Cha, like an (advanced) Umber Hulk or Basilisk.

Not bad, though their SLAs are pretty weak... caster level = character level for some reason. Unless that means HD?

Character level is HD+LA so very high for monsters.

Greenbound is OP and requires houseruling because Wall of Thorns is a terribly designed spell. DC 25 STR check or you can't move, duration 10 minutes per level, and it takes fifty minutes to cut through a 5' block, or ten minutes of fire to burn through it.

The Tendriculous may be what you're looking for. Reach, grab, durability.

How about an Elder Treant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/treantElder.htm)?

What's the supposed party level? (Because Elder Treant (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/treantElder.htm) and Mu Spore (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/muSpore.htm) are Colossal Plants too...)

Depending on party composition, the Greenvise (MM2 p. 120), makes for a dangerous encounter, even before advancing its racial HD.

Huge reach, four tendril attacks + improved grab, bite + swallow whole, blindsight and Death Fog, which is a (Su) Acid Fog that cannot be dispelled, burns your PCs in acid each round and does not impede the monster in anyway while snatching PCs with its tendrils and swallowing them.

It's also immune to acid, which makes sense since it can walk around her own Acid Fog. Its AC is rather low, but if you increase it's HD or add templates, you can compensate for that.

It has Intelligence 3, so it qualifies for feats, which you can adjust arbitrarily, since MM2 did not give her any.

All that for a CR 10 monster, but be warned: MM2 is infamous for it's creature design and power gauging.

Battlebriar from MM3 seems about as unsubtle as a plant creature can get. Advances to 50 HD if you need to.

Ironmaw (MM3) is pretty solid for what it offers. Great Wildshape form too FWIW. Of course, "high optimization parties" tend to not care that much about big and strong things in the first place so it's all in the definition of "high level" and "high optimization".

Not terribly exotic, but I've always had a thing for the Shambling Mound and the Tendriculos straight from the MMI.

No, character level is just HD (class and racial combiend), what you're describing is ECL, which isn't interchangable with character level, and only applies to certain things.

If you're fine with using pathfinder material, the Alraune is a pretty horrifying encounter for any unprepared party. A 60ft calm emotions aura at a pretty reasonable DC will prevent most of the party from retaliating, while it singles out opponents and ravages them with 4 pretty nasty vine attacks that constrict and bleed, along with a few choice SLAs that she can use to divide the party, or turn them to her side.

CR13, so makes an excellent boss for a party of level 9s or 10s, though be wary, it can easily result in a party wipe.

There isn't one; the request is just big, brutal plant monsters.

Which you guys are doing great at, by the way. Thanks!

Octopus tree. Multiple attacks, and hard to put down.
