I was just reading strips randomly and noticed something that surprised me. In strip 911 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0911.html) Belkar's actually using a female personal pronoun for V! That's normal for some other characters, who usually call V whatever they think, but Belkar had this thing going where he got frustrated because of his failure to figure out V's gender. Then suddenly he uses a pronoun... I'm pretty surprised he chose a female one. Last time his brain had to fill this kind of information with no context, he defaulted to male (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0333.html). So there must be some kind of context with V that makes Belkar choose female this time. But why use a pronoun at all? Didn't he use to call V "androgynous freak"? Has he used a pronoun again for V and I missed it? Does that mean that V's still in the "lust" part of his proto-brain? If not, what does it mean? I'm pretty sure it's not a slip up of the Giant. Usually the characters' choice of pronouns for V tells us more about them than it does about V. So what does this tell us about Belkar?

It means he's trying to mess with you. You, personally. Belkar's kind of a jerk.

Damn him! And damn that minimum character limit!

It tells us that Belkar still perceives V as a woman. And I mean "still" because he has kissed her/him before (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0316.html).

Part of me wants V to be male just to see how Belkar handles the revelation with that context.

Will he be insecure and freak? Macho it out? Or just accept what happened before and now* and just move on with closure?

Considering how much fun Belkar had hitting on gender-switched Roy, I don't think it would be a big issue for him.

But he knew. He knew it was Roy before he even had a good look at him.

Speaking of which... Has Belkar not met both male and female elves, or is his nose only acute enough to tell identities not gender?

Precisely. He knew, and he was secure enough in his manhood to go that far. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0244.html) Thus, I don't think he'd have any trouble accepting V as a male despite The Incident, but Belkar might not try to kiss V again after that. Not that it was likely either way.

Maybe Belkar is the only one right, as he would not use pyshical appearance, but her smell. If she is female, she has female pheromones, so Belkar's halfling nose would know, as he knows that Nale is not Elan.

Human's don't have pheromones, and there is no reason to think elves do.

so Belkar's halfling nose would know as he knows that Nale is not Elan.
Does not follow: telling that a human does not smell like he used to doesn't mean you can tell males from females. Especially when the example you give is Belkar telling two males apart.

I'm positive that Belkar doesn't have any memory of that incident. He was blackout drunk at the time and never mentioned it again, even when V unleashed a barrage of pranks and explosions on him.

Yes, in one of the books (Don't split the party I think?) there is a character relationship chart. The line from Belkar to Vaarsuvius is labeled 'wants to shtup'. We've seen that term used before and so we know what it means.

Of course!

Vaarsuvius and Belkar sitting in a tree S-H-I-P-P-I-N-G
First comes love, then comes Explosive Runes (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0317.html)!

While despite calling :vaarsuvius: "I do not normally pay attention to pronouns" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0698.html) Vaarsuvius an "androgynous twit" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0323.html) we can be sure that Belkar finds that Vaarsuvius is "in fact, a hottie, smoking or otherwise" (at least on New Year's Eve (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0316.html)), because :belkar:
"The Belkster don't have time for the fuglies!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0338.html)

Now while Belkar was someone who only reacts to people with either hate or lust (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0335.html), I really think that The Belkster has grown a hint of a conscience because of Scruffy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0807.html), and V is just the Elf to teach about having a conscience (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0843.html).

IT'S A ROMANCE THAT WILL NOT BE DENIED!!!

Shall we call the couple Belkarsuvius or Vaalkar?
