Can you use weapons like whips, lassos or mancatchers to make grapple attacks? If you can how would it be different than a normal grapple attack?

By RAW you cannot, but I've allowed some stuff like that (using normal grapple rules) with a whip... you get extra range, but risk disarming yourself

3.5 or Pathfinder? In PF, you can use a weapon with the grapple property to perform a grapple if you crit with it, and certain weapons can be used to grapple regardless (e.g. Blade of Binding.) Furthermore, if you use a weapon to perform a combat maneuver in PF, you get to add that weapon's enhancement bonus (and any specific bonuses you have with that weapon, such as Weapon Focus or Weapon Training) to the check.

We once improvised a lasso at our table, it involved an inprovised ranged attack and a grappling contest.
