Remembering a scene cant remember the movie/series

Basically, i remember a scene where a blacksmith takes a gold coin, puts his chisel on top, and then marks a line on top of it. Maybe an X.

Now, i cannot for the life of me remember why, but it had significance in the story. Maybe it marked disgrace? Like, the coin was a symbol of someone's status?

No idea what the movie/show was.
If it helps it occurs to me the blacksmith may be testing that the coin is gold all the way through not just lead covered in a thin film of gold or gold paint
