As you open the door and step out of the Mansion, the morning sun is nearly blinding. The sky is cloudless and the sun is warm. The breeze is cool off the glittering ocean water. The ruins of the city look almost exotic in the beautiful light, the remains of wrecked ships like browned bones of great sea creatures.

The corpses of the adults and the looters stand out among the beauty. They lay there broken and bloodied. There aren't many of each, but that's only because there aren't many adults left to begin with.

Nothing much moves aside from you. Cloth flutters in the breeze.

There are 25 bodies.
8 are known to you. The last of the adults. To your knowledge, you are the last living things in the area.
17 looters lie around. Dead.

It's late spring. This kind of weather isn't uncommon, but this... This is a much better day than most.
You had the opportunity to eat breakfast and clean up before leaving the Mansion, so assume you are in prime condition for, well, whatever you're going to do.

Zephyrinque stands motionless, surveying the battlefield. Her eyes quietly scan the bodies, counting to ensure she was correct: that everyone was indeed here. Their bodies were mostly picked clean of anything of value by the raiders, as we the raiders themselves. It was a harsh simplicity, laid bare before them, that the strong took what they wanted, and that the weak simply died.

Her mind raced as she considered her new reality... Without Pentule, they would be vulnerable. Even with him, they were apparently vulnerable... Where would they go? How will they eat? How could they protect and provide for themselves, and even better than the adults were doing?

Was it even possible? Or will this too, soon be their fate as well?

Crik-Sa Kor

The Thri-Kreen pulls his spines into his armoured form as he squeezes by the rest of the children, as soon as he clears the doorway he runs a few metres and the leaps into the air his wings making a buzzing whizing sound as he soars forward landing nearly fifteen metres from where he started. His small insectile head rotates from left to right as his large compound amber eyes scanning the carnage until they settle upon the static and twisted form of Chuth-Kra. Once again he leaps forward coming to land near her body.

The large Kreen kneels down next to the only other of his kind he has known, the only mother he has known. He picks her up, cradling her in his six long appendages and carefully walks with her back near the centre of their settlment, back towards the others.

"We must tend to our dead." he says flatly as he passes near to the others.

Description
Crik-Sa Korr stands at 7' 3" yet may be taller considering he is often slightly crouched, his carapaces is thicker than that of other Thri-Kree and its colour is a deep almost black green while his eyes are an iridescent amber that almost seem to glow red. He possesses many of the normal features of his race, four limbs ending in clawed hands, powerful legs built for leaping and mandibles capable of secreting a paralytic venom. However in addition he possess an extra pair of limbs that are beneath his normal arms yet instead of bearing clawed hands they are simply capped with sharp chitin, his mandibles conceal a barbed proboscis that allows him to both strike and feed and his carapace is covered in spiny protrusions which he can retract or fire with surprising range, accuracy and power.

Backstory

Crik-Sa Kor or “Creek” as the other survivors have come to affectionately call him originally came to Beomsfeld as an egg from a clutch of fourteen eggs carried by brood guardians who came as refugees from their hunting lands in the wilds of Amarth which had fallen to the advancing armies of the Clemant Empire.

Although his species had a strong dislike, borne of distrust, for other races necessity of protecting the brood and the future of their race led them to Beomsfeld. These were the last eggs from their respective clutches. What once were a series of tribes and families numbering in the hundreds had been reduced to a mere hand full of scattered groups numbering five or six each. Thousands of eggs had been lost or destroyed in the chaos, a group of desperate Thri-Kreen banded together for the sole purpose of getting as many eggs to safety as they could.

They had come to this city because some travellers they had met on the way mentioned that there was a “special place” for awaiting birth in a place called "Beomsfeld" and they thought this was the best hope for preserving the future of their people. So it was that the group of six Kreen came to the city with their treasure of 14 eggs. After some initial confusion with the guards who watched over the birthing area Pentule arrived and explained that these Kreen, after a fashion, were also “expectant ‘mothers’” and so they were admitted in with their precious cargo in tow.

What happened next is known to all those who survived that terrible day. The disaster that befell Beomsfeld will be lamented in the songs of bards for centuries to come. All but one of the original six Kreen died in the initial disaster. Leaving only a young female Chuth-Kra to look after the eggs. Sadly eight of the 14 eggs were too badly damaged when the meteor struck leaving only six viable eggs left.

In the days that came slowly, one after another, the eggs hatched, however, many of the new Kreen passed away, some to raids and accidents but some seemed sickly or had strange unusual features and for some unknown reason it seemed the normal period of gestation was somehow changed. Most clutches hatched together but these eggs, each seemed to hatch in their own time, and each Kreen that emerged was somehow quite unlike any of the others of their species or clutch.

Chuth-Kra was worried that she had failed and at last she only had two remaining eggs unhatched. Then one day Crik-Sa of the Kor Clutch was born, he emerged with days and hours of many of the children of some of the other women who were there and he seemed to bond with these children as if they were his clutch mates, despite them not being Thri-Kreen nor from his brood.

Chuth-Kra brought him up as she would have any Kreen, but he was neither normal in appearance or environment to those of their people. Like most he bore the insect like semblance renown for their species but he seemed to have an extra pair of appendages, slender and long, they seemed more akin to antenna or tentacles than proper Kreen arms, they lacked the claws and thumbs of a normal limb and ended instead in a sharp cap. Like the rest of his body they were covered in a hardy carapace. Yet unlike most of his normal peers his chitin seemed much thicker and harder than most, the heaviness perhaps also made him much slower of foot than others of his race. He was also covered in many small barbed spines, as he matured it seemed he could eject these spiny growths to great lengths and with surprising accuracy. He also possessed within his much larger mandibles a barbed proboscis that could be ejected at great speed and force and also used to feed.

Yet despite all of this, or perhaps because of it, he also seemed disturbed. He was often agitated, restless, he seemed troubled, he became obsessively worried about the last remaining egg which he used to check on incessantly until Chuth-Ka finally made him a small armoured sling and allowed him to carry it with him. It never left his side. Once he began to keep it with him he seemed much improved although he was still prone to bouts of anger and rage and at times seemed to be in commune or contact with people Chuth-Kra could neither see nor hear. Perhaps he knew instinctively what she never told him – that that egg was the only one left from his clutch, lain by has biological mother. She feared that if he knew and something went wrong that he would never recover.

Then the day of the attack occurred, Crik-Sa had wanted to rush into the fray with the other remaining adults but Chuth-Kra had forced him into the magical construct telling him “Protect them! They are you clutch mates” so begrudgingly he stayed with the other children as Chuth-Kra and the rest of their community were killed. Now he must continue on but he is determined to fulfil his “mother’s” last wish and to protect these other children with his dying breath.

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.
Is from a more feral sturdy and less refined Thri-Kreen stock, despite his rearing he has bestial urges he tries to keep in check
Considers the other children as his Clutch-mates, meaning they are much closer than family -- almost an extension of his self in other bodies.
He feels lost without Chuth-Kra this is the first time in his life without a clear leader or authority figure.
Keeping the other children safe from harm is now one of his only clear purposes and drives -- and the last thing Chuth-Kra ordered him to do.
He sometimes hears voices and sees things which it seems others do not.
Obsessively protective of the egg he caries which he has named "Okk-Kor".

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character.
To see Okk-Kor hatch and meet his little brother or sister.
Find out what happened to the rest of the Thri-Kreen. Is he and Okk the last of their kind?

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.
(Known) He is mentally unstable, prone to bouts of rage and a lack of lucidity.
(Unknown) An ancient Abyssal intelligence was separated from its body during the meteor strike and while looking for a physical form entered Crik and Okk's eggs splitting its essence between the two so that it no longer exists except as a primal fragmented consciousness.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.
(Friendly)
(Friendly)
(Hostile)

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has.
(Memory) Leaping and jumping among the ruined buildings with Chuth-Kra when he was newly hatched.
(Mannerism) Rubbing his wings or tentaclaws together producing a cricket or cicada like chirp when he becomes excited.
(Quirk) Speaking to his egg Okk as if it understands him and responds.

Dorian Safehaven

Stepping from the mansion, Dorian frowns sadly. He was about to voice his own sadness and disgust at the situation, but seeing the other's faces and Creek's loss, he decides to place his hand on Zephyr's shoulder. His ears droop, empathizing with her sadness, while his expression offers comfort instead.

Hyde was one of the first to leave the safety of the mansion, unusual considering his penchant for running. He immediately scanned the desolation before him, bodies were laying every which way, no discernible direction from where the battle had started or ended. Then he spotted him. MARKUS!! Hyde ran to the body as quick as he can and fell before his fallen mentor, his head falls into his arms over Markus, and he starts sobbing. First time he's every been there to experience a loss of someone he truly cared for. I will keep them safe for you and i will find whoever did this and make them pay. Hyde closes markus's eyes and immediately stands up turns around, and with a solemn sigh, finally talks to his fellow "kids" even though now he sure didn't feel like one as he's sure they felt the same. ok this is bad

Zephyrinque prickles slightly at Dorian's touch, then relaxes as she sees it is him, and leans her head against his hand as they watch Crik-Sa and Hyde mourn more personally. Her mother died last year, but these people were still each a close connection... Though death was a continuous presence for each of them these last years.

As Crik-Sa returns with a body, asking to make burial preparations, Zeph stirs out of her mood.
"Should we, though? If we make burials, we show that we are still here... We should cover our tracks. We can't handle anything they could not..."

Inside the confines of the mansion, Tyralisa had been restless the previous night, finally heading off to a room and falling into a fitful sleep. When she got up and cleaned up, she ate quickly, stuffing herself with everything that was provided until she felt she could eat no more. She both wanted and didn't want to go out alone, so she waited until everyone else was ready.

When they finally step outside, Tyra moves out toward the front, stepping a little to the side. She wasn't sure what to expect; she hoped things would be okay. She feared and expected the worst, and as she looks over the scene, eyeing each of the adults she recognizes, Tyra closes her eyes and sighs slightly, before letting out a soft, sad, screeching sort of roar. Her direct family had died years ago, and she hadn't really gotten particularly close to most of those adults that were still around, but they were still an extended family to her.

Stepping forward, Tyralisa looks over the bodies, particularly paying attention to any gear or valuable items - if the adults had taken down the looters with them, then no one would have been able to cart away valuables, but if everything of value was gone, then some looters survived.

"Yeah...we should." She says, looking back at Zephyr. "I get the concern, but things seem quiet, and...I don't think they were after us, just...all the loot." Looking around the area, it occurs to her to check on their stores of food, water, and other essentials, heading off a short ways from the site of the deaths to go see if everything has been looted or not.

Medina steps out of the mansion, and stares at the carnage. "They're all gone. Everyone..." She falls to her knees and cries. No one left to teach her of how beautiful and prosperous the city looked. No one left to prepare her for the outside world. No one left to stop her from leaving. While she wasn't the only one to want to leave this place, "...not like this. Not like this.

Crik-Sa Kor

Crik tilts his head at an odd angle that most humonoids are unable to achieve, almost rotating it perpendicular to his body. His wings click open as the chitin sheath housing them slides away and they vibrate rappidly against one another making a screeching chirp punctuated by his spines ejecting rapidly from his body as he looks to Zephyrinque while passing, "Shoch taj chal mol jIhk!" he says in Kreen as he continues past Dorian and Zephyrinque.

While the others set about their task and take in the horror of the site Crik goes to the place not too far off where he Chuth-Kra used to tell him stories of their people. He lays her down on the very small hill and picks up the rock that used to serve as her chair for the lessons. He then begins furiously churning at the earth with all six of his limbs a frenzied flood of small rocks and dirt flying in all directions as he pour all his rage into gutting the hill and gauging a scar like trench in her surface. The newly bloomed spring flowers lay strew about crushed beneath wet loam and earth and debris and scattered not unlike the bodies of those below.

Once done standing in a small trough about one and a half metres deep and two and half metres long he places Chuth-Kra into her grave so that she can return to the earth from whence their people first came. Though their home was much harsh than this -- or so the stories said. But now. Now he doubts there is any place more callous or cruel. He scoops and pushes the churned earth back atoop his "mother's" lifeless husk and then places her teaching rock back upon it as a marker.

Crik does not know how to make or understand the word scratches. He isn't smart like the others. Instead he scratches an oblong ellipse upon the stone. A crude and primitive effigy of hope an rebirth. An egg.

Zephyrinque listens to Tyra with an accepting nod, but bristles at Crik-Sa's churlish noises as he walks away without a care about the rest of the group.

"Always so boorish, the Dire Tri-Bug. Great conversation." She sneers at gun as he walks away. "Get us all killed, without a thought in his antennae." Mentioning getting killed sobers her up a little, and she briefly comforts Medina before joining Tyna in a search and burial.

Not off on a good foot with Crik-Sa, then. Head vs. Heart conflict?

Moira

When the others pressed to get out of the mansion, she did not try to squeeze through the door first, despite her general curiosity. She had seen the outside world just a little bit, but she had learned that it was as beautiful as it was dangerous. And now this danger had materialized in form of the raiders. Moira just knew that they all must have been dead or possibly kidnapped. Otherwise they would have come and knocked on the door already.

When she heard the others moaning, Moira felt how something dark came crawling from the shadow behind her, something that she could not see precisely in the corner of her eye, but knew it was there. Just as she knew that if she turned around, it would be gone again. It was not the first time, this ... thing came to visit her, sometimes to embrace her like a caring parent, sometimes to choke her half to death. She had talked to one of the adults about it once. They said this was how feelings worked, and if she visualizing her feelings in such a way, this was nothing too curious. Moira believed them, simply because she never had a reason to doubt what adults told her. Now, she saw the images of these adults before her inner eye just as if they were real, and then they suddenly faded into nothingness. They were gone - forever. Suddenly, she felt an immaterial hand put on her mouth, so she could not speak, and others closing around her neck, starting to take her breath away. She felt herself fading too...

Gasping, she stumbled into the bright light of day. Cruelty paired with beauty. Just how the outside world had always worked, the few times she got a glimpse of it. Her first instinct wanted her to take care of her peers. But then, finally, another instinct kicked in. Survival.

---

"We need to find shelter." Still feeling the blood rushing through her body and its sound blocking up her ears, Moira walks towards the little shack that they had used to stash away the camping gear. While doing so, she studies her surroundings, taking care to avoid the corpses, and more focusing on imminent dangers.

Alessia watches silently from her hiding place behind the doors of the mansion. The others mourn, comfort each other, and begin burial preparations. She crouches, observing. Perhaps there should be some form of emotion. Tears. Those are acceptable at a time like this, no? Or screaming.

She feels the rage. Oh yes. It burns bright in the core of her being. Seeing them, these children being thrust into adulthood...it pains her. Far more than her personal loss. After all, Pentule said they were a family. A little unusual, but a family all the same.

She reaches for her knapsack. It was already packed. It has been packed since she got in the habit of sneaking around. Better safe than sorry, the guards would say. They were always prepared.Of course , she muttered bitterly,we see how that went.

Taking in a deep breath, she steps forward and clears her throat.

How can I help?

Dorian watches Crik sadly and responds to Zephyr with a light chide. "He's grieving. One such as he had little in this world to love, and now it's gone." His face is drawn and grief stricken, his ears droop with the weight of the situation. "Let him grieve."

The fox-man walks to the bug and assists him as best he can to bury his 'mother' before looking him in his great compound eyes. "I am sorry for your loss, friend."

Moments like these make Dorian wish he could be split into as many bodies as he had tails, to comfort all those around him at once. His personal grief for his now-dead family must wait.

As she hears the noises, Tyra gives out another roaring screech - this one louder, following up a moment after Zephyr called her warning. She concentrates briefly, summoning up a field of force to protect her, and the crystalline protrusions of her body glow faintly for a moment. "Get back together!" she calls out, not wanting everyone to be so spread out; she can't help protect them if they were in all different directions, and she isn't sure where the source of the sounds she's hearing is coming from, but she snaps her claws a couple times, readying herself to attack anything that presents itself while moving closer to Zephyr and Hyde so that if anything came at them, she could reach it.
In the free round she gets due to hearing the enemy approaching, Tyra uses her inertial armor psi-like ability.
Then she readies an action to attack, should anything hostile come within her 10 ft. reach, since she can't tell what's coming of where from.

Based on what we were doing, I got the impression Zephyr, Hyde, and Tyra are relatively close to each other, so Tyra will try to position herself so that her reach allows her to threaten anything that comes close to them.

Okay. Adjusting the map using OneNote on my phone is too much while cleaning cars, lol. Use Mnemnosyne's map to take this into account.

There is a negligibly low wall from C5 to V5. It might have been beautiful once...
The wall turns south from C5 to C13. It's identical to the first.
From V5 to V13 the wall is a bit higher, with rubble on the far side. Call that rough terrain out to the Z column.
Hyde had found himself a Roman-style column to hide on top of... Not very hidden, but 10' off the ground.
The mound Crik and Dorian are on is raised about 5'.
Patches of heavy rubble, cover providing, at P8 and Q10.

Rat1 is at J4.

And now that you are up close, you can see that the rat has... Wings!

Upon looking around hyde spots a weird rat type creature with wings sneaking up on Alessia. Knowing he wouldn't make it in time he screams at the top of his lungs, now no longer caring if he's seen "ALESSIA! LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!. then he jumps down without looking carefully and catches his foot on a rock upon landing and misses his balance and falls forward catching himself before smacking his face into a jagged piece of rubble.

Crik-Sa Kor

He turns to look at where there refuge once was, the door quickly fading, there is Alessia and behind her a strange creature like a rat with wings. He pivots his body towards the where the creature ism his tentaclaw gently nudges Dorian so that he lowers his centre of gravity then there is schlthp as one of his spines is ejected from his body and hurtles towards the rat-thing with deadly force. Yet living it still alive.

Seeing more coming the wings on his back begin humming as his chitin sleeve slides open and he take a few steps down the hill and then leaps into the air with a buzzing sound, twisting slightly as he comes down behind the rats, his mandibles clicking as his wings slide back into their armoured sheath.

(Unknown) An ancient Abyssal intelligence was separated from its body during the meteor strike and while looking for a physical form entered Cirk and Okk's eggs splitting its essence between the two so that it no longer exists except as a primal fragmented consciousness.

Hoping there isn't gonna be another wave of them, she hurries over to help Zephyrnique; she knows Crik is tough and can handle any trouble, and...while it looks like Zephyr isn't going to have any issues either, she has always avoided too much physical scuffling, so to Tyra's mind, she's in greater need of help than Crik. Round 1 Wrap Up

After decisively ending the first rat to show itself, Zephyr makes use of a martial maneuver called Charging Minituar on her next target of opportunity.
Charging minotaur? The maneuver is aptly named as, when the second rat pokes it's little furry head out, it's met by Zeph's fist. The sound of it's wings falling to the ground is loud across in the relative quiet.
The air around Tyra shimmers slightly as she invokes a protective field around herself as Medina passes through with the intent of crushing a third rat. She can feel the small bones snapping against her knuckles. It shudders and whimpers in pain.
Hyde uses his elevated position to spot a rat no one had yet seen and cries out to warn Alessia of her danger. In his excitement to help out he leaps from the pillar and lands on a loose stone. He lands on his butt in time to see a well-aimed quill shoot past both himself and Alessia to pin the rat to the dirt.
As Crik and Dorian race to handle to rats nearby, Alessia impales the pinned rat with such force that the remains vanish. It didn't even have the chance to squeak.
Dorian's blade finds purchase on the target of his choosing, cutting off it's tail completely. The rodent looks at him. Looks at his tails. Looks at it's own tail severed from it. Looks at Dorian once again. And SHRIEKS!
Tyra strides with great purpose to Zephyr's side and ends the suffering of the whimpering rat. With her foot. The sound of winged rat turning into paste triggers another shriek immediately west of Moira.
The new rat is sitting up on it's haunches, arms spread, and mouth open to the sky. From behind it leaps another rat, wings beating furiously. Rats were never meant to fly and this one proves true to that as it falls at Moira.
Moira's ball of resin is a complete and total surprise to the little thing. It hits square on, engulfing the rat entirely, and knocks it back into the shrieker behind it. The resin solidifies with one rat inside and one stuck to the outside.

A shriek from the distance carries across the city and is rewarded with echoes from locations to the north, south and east.

"...yeah. Yeah, we can't stay here and try to deal with this, there's probably going to be too many." Seeing Moira grabbing stuff from the shed, and Zephyr finishing off the stickied-up rats, Tyralisa glances around; one is still squealing, but she figures Creek will take care of it in a moment, it's near him. She hurries over towards Moira, figuring she can help. "We're going to want to leave town to the west, along where the old trade road is." Speaking loudly, so those far away can hear, she explains, "The rats will probably stick to the town; once we get past the ruins we should be in the clear, so we can stop and figure out what we're gonna do."

Tyra grabs one of the rucksacks and slips it on her back, feeling a little uncomfortable with it but figuring she needed to carry something, and having never seen these before, she decides they're probably worth taking with them if only to check on their contents. She also quickly grabs a pack and shoves the chest of money into it; she isn't sure what's going to happen, but if they ever interact with outsiders, the money might matter, and she knows it's heavy.

Crik-Sa Kor

Crik looks at the squeaking rat, then crouches down over it impaling it with a tentaclaw and then raising it to his mandibles which close fast on the rat before his proboscis ejects into the flesh of the rat allowing him to suck meat and blood out of the little beast. He tosses the empty husk over his shoulder as he retracts his spines and jumps back over the wall with the familiar buzz of his wings. Coming to land near the others.

"We are leaving?" he asks seeing everyone grabbing gear and packs. He points to one of the chests with a claw, "Do you want me to take that, and is everyone unharmed?" he asks looking around at everyone.

I am guessing we are not really in combat, if you want me to roll for killing the rat I can but otherwise I scoop it up and drain it.

Hurrying off toward the road by way of the barracks, Tyra stays close to the group, calling out, "Don't go too far!" at Hyde when he moves off to look around; while she understands it's a good idea to check around, she'd rather everyone stay within sight of each other so they can help each other. Keeping a close lookout all around them, she continues to watch, hoping they can gather Medina's stuff and move along before too many of the rats approach.

Since we leveled, Tyra now has the Scent ability active (from her Hunter's Sense stance), so she should be able to smell things within 30 ft. (60 upwind, 15 downwind), and 3x the range if it's a scent-based attack like troglodyte stench. (Just mentioning all the details since I had to look them up myself, figured a reminder wouldn't hurt).

As he rounds the corner of the barracks, making sure not to step on any twigs or otherwise be any louder than the wind howling through the rubble, crisscrossing and intersecting through what was once our home. He hears Tyra yell to stay close as he spies the familiar leather pack of a disguise kit. Usually used when Pentule and Markus, as well as the other adults when there were more, used to put on shows for us when we were little. Not wanting to pass up this new memento, however miniscule the one memory might seem. Getting closer to the drain he noticed it was caught on a crude cover, from which he could make out echoes... at least he'd hoped it was echoes, of the same sound they have been running from, only now they are getting louder as he nears his prize.

As he grabs the kit, a particular echo (god i hope) caught him off guard, it sounded as if it were right below him!
He quickly turns around and scurries up the little bank from where the ditch held the drain. Returning to where Tyra was gathering everyone together into one view.
Medina, i would advise against any digging around this area, i found this on a drain and what i heard with it, wasn't comforting as he holds out the old disguise kit to the group.

The trade road is long and white. The sun has bleached it and the bones of those who died here during it's years of disuse.
The only real color is the dried blood of retreating looters. The trail of blood takes the same route you do.

Your footsteps slap loudly on the broken tiles lining the road. Some of you might think to try sneaking along it, except fit the beady eyes lining the edges of the roadway. Watching you. Fluttering their wings as they track your movements. At first, you kick a couple away. And they die easily enough. But there's always more.

They chitter between each other. It's like they are waiting for something to happen.
---------------------

The entrance to the gate house looms ahead. The wall itself is heavy and forboding, even in it's damaged state. A rich, thick brown lichen coats the surface.

The rats appear to be herding you into the gate house. Indeed, the trail of blood ends outside the open door.

An overeager rat falls against the wall. It is immediately pulled tight to the lichen by fast growing vines and tendrils. In the time it takes to draw breath the rat is not even a lump in the smooth slickness of the barrier. Red radiates for a moment outward from the rat's corpse. It didn't even have time to squeak.

The dark doorway beckons you to enter.

Zephyr does not enjoy following the blood trail.

Has blood always smelled this pungent? Zephyr swears this scent clings to her, refusing to grant her release. Not that the swarm of hungry rats was any better... They must truly reek for her to notice them from so far away.

With their safety eroded, surrounded by hungry rats and approaching a surrounding wall, Zephyr began to get anxious at the trapped feeling she was starting to get. With an impatient huff, she scornfully mourns, "I knew we should not have stopped back there! Now there's too many to even count..." As they approached the lichen-walled gatehouse, Zephyr watched with interest as the rat crumples into the wall. "Wait, I've read about this... Bloodvine, or maybe Assassin thorn?" Zephyrs trails off into thought, recalling images depicting sheets of living plant...

As the group comes to the end of the blood trail, he wonders why it stops so suddenly in front of the archway, then just as the thoight is forming, a rat clambors out near a side wall to closely to the fuzzy green plant coming off the wall, as the wall itself seems to suck in the poor creature before it can even respond. Medina sees the crumbling wall, with lethal plants growing across it. She also sees the trail of blood going into the gatehouse. The very CREEPY Gatehouse. With the blood trail leading in. She looks back at the wall, and whispers, "How likely would that wall collapse on me If I were to dig a tunnel under it for us? Yea, it would give the rats a way out, but we could collapse the tunnel from the other side, or the wall from under it once we're through." She pauses, then says, "I don't want to go in the creepy house that is obviously a trap."

Medina wishes she paid more attention to the architecture books. Since they've stopped for a moment anyway, she takes a small amount of time to put her chain shirt on.

"Some of the rats can fly; I'm not sure giving them a way out is a major concern. Also, rats can swim; the ones that can't fly could go around through the ocean if they wanted to, and I doubt this wall is totally unbroken all around the entire city extending into the water." Tyra comments, while she looks around; she doesn't like the looks of the gatehouse at all, especially not how the blood trail simply stops with a splatter and there's no bodies or even bones. The presence of bodies would be concerning; the absence of them is downright creepy.

Looking around, Tyra examines the nearby area's building ruins, looking specifically for anything large and solid; structurally supporting timbers that were still present; anything big enough to prop up against the wall and create a ramp to go over it without touching it - in the ruins, she figures there must be something big enough to do that with, even if it's heavy enough that two or three of them would have to work together to lift and move it. That seems like a good option; she likes Medina's suggestion about making a tunnel, since she does not like the looks of the gatehouse at all, but other options are always good.

Then Zephyr goes on in as well, which makes Tyra frown a little more, but then, there don't seem to be that many options. Although, she still really likes the idea of following through Medina's tunnel if it was possible. "What are they waiting for? Expecting? Anything in there? Can you see the way out the other side?"

Getting a bit frustrated at everyone wandering into the gatehouse and then having their attention caught by a wagon in the middle of it, Tyralisa grunts in frustration. She doesn't like the idea of going in there - less for herself than for the others - and they're going in anyway. Snorting a bit, Tyra finally moves inside the gatehouse with the others, but unlike everyone else, she doesn't focus on the cart in the middle. Yes, they seem to be finding potions and such in it, and it's distracting them. The thought that the reason the trail of blood stops might be because they used some of the healing potions doesn't yet occur to the large girl, so she remains on alert assuming something horrible must have happened to the fleeing looters as she moves in, her split tail swishing sharply from side to side with both of its ends as she glances around the room, keeping a close lookout and in particular listening; the rats all went silent, which at least, she figures, makes it more likely she'll hear any sudden change in the situation.

As she reaches the gate that's mostly down, Tyralisa reaches down and grabs it, lifting to see if she can haul it upward; she could get on the floor and roll under it, but she doesn't like that idea so much, plus it looks like the gates beyond need to be lifted anyway - might as well, she figures, see if she can do it right now. Only if she cannot does she roll under it, getting back to her feet as quickly as she can, and looking a little more nervous to be stuck inside now.

Tyra's strength of 24 gives her a maximum lifted weight of 1400 pounds, and given the size of the gatehouse and thus the portcullis, I'd guess that's probably not enough to lift the thing, but I suppose it depends on its construction and thickness; it could be light enough for her to lift.

In either case, she will move through the gate to W-2, since everyone else has moved in as well even against her better judgement.

The sound rebounds off the walls of the kill box. It travels up the walls, passing evenly spaced murder holes where once archers would have aimed their arrows at suspicious persons inside. It dissipates through the gaping holes in the ceiling, through the shattered remains of the upper levels of the gatehouse.

As you look around peer further around you see that the piles of rubble consist of furniture from the upper level offices.

Except that one next to gate 2. The wet chewing noises seem to be coming from there...

Skittering. Quiet, almost orderly skittering. Your attention is drawn to gate 4.

It looks like the rats from outside are... flowing?.. together. And merging. Into a pair of much, MUCH larger forms.

When the flow stops and the merging completed, two large creatures rise up on hind legs. The first ogrish rat steps forward toward Dorian while the second reaches a long arm up to the gate now just behind it and pulls it down to the ground.

Hearing the gate drawn close, Moira's head spins around, followed by her body in a fluid, but somewhat unnatural motion. At the sight, she releases a scream of terror and tumbles slightly forward, gagging, coughing as if she has something in her throat. Then, a breathe later, she opens her mouth, her eyes glowing green in the dark and standing still like a statue. Thousands of small flying vermin leave her mouth, giving off a terrifying buzzing noise, and forward in a cone towards the two rat ogres, and vanish upon impact. Just a split second later it is silent again. Moira's right takes a hammer of her belt, while her right goes towards her throat, her eyes wide open, apparently shocked upon what had just happened.

Coiling up her body, she bounds over her first rubble pile to get a better look...

Medina is so glad she doesn't need to breathe, having caught a small whiff of the stench coming in. Seeing two massive rats behind, the party, and one over by where Zephyr landed, she decides to charge the lone one, protecting her exposed sibling.

Hearing the sounds and smells that suggest a fight is about to happen on the other side of the door, but seeing a massive...thing...rise up in front of them, Tyra frowns and hopes that Creek and the others still on the other side of the door have things under control; rolling under the door at this point seems like a bad idea. Instead, she crosses the room, leaping over some rubble along her way. As she does so, from her back a pair of wings suddenly seem to unfurl, having been...hidden within her carapace until now? It almost seems as though her body is physically shifting mid-jump to sprout them, actually.

Circling around behind the ratogre, she positions herself behind it, so that it's stuck between her on the back and Zephyr and Hyde in front, then leans in and takes a powerful swipe at the thing with her right claw from behind.
Move to N-14, making a 10 ft. jump over the rubble in S-12 and R-12 (automatic success, DC for a 10 ft. long jump is 10 and she's got a +12 to Jump checks).
Attack with Stone Bones and expend Psionic Focus to use Psionic Weapon and add +2d6 damage.

Alessia manages to read the letter before she realizes that everyone around her is suddenly panicking. As she looks up, slightly dazed from the revelation, she sees a giant rat-like hulking beast (WITH ATTITUDE!!!) ahead of her. Letting the tears stream down her face, she quickly shoves the pouch and letter into her knapsack and slings everything over her shoulders. There will be time for speaking with her sister (Sister?!) later. Right now, she must ensure that they both survive this, along with the rest of her party. More reason to survive now that she knows she has family. Real, actual blood family!

The glimmer of her azure weapon begins to show as she moves toward the creature with newfound resolve, and as she stabs at the beast, the spear from her previous rat encounter fully materializes in her hands.

Okay. What I want to do is tumble 10ft and then make a skirmish. I don't know exactly by whom I am currently threatened. I also don't know whether I can attack any of the ogres without the -4 for being in melee with an ally. I think if they actually large, I can forgo the penalty, but I am not too sure. Maybe someone else can help me with this.
If my tumble fails, I will get AoOs from the Ogres (if they threaten me).

KIIIIIIIIIIII-YAA!

A halfling in a skin-tight bodysuit drops down from the opening in the ceiling. His landing turns into a tumble taking him right under gate 3 where he stops right next to Dorian. Looking around, he barks into an item in his hand, "YOUR GUESS IS DEAD ON! GUS! GO!"

Halfling lands on W12 and Tumbles to X12.

A figure you can only assume is Gus "POPS" into existence on the ceiling. The human is there for a fraction of a second before pushing of and propelling himself straight to the ground. The shiny silver harpoons in his hands hit home deep in the Rat Ogres.

"Gus" lands at AA13. He plants a Silver Harpoon in Rat Ogre 1 (10 damage) and 2 (10 damage).

Gate 1 crashes open in a storm of splinters. The warforged silhouetted against the daylight takes a single step forward and throws a silvered harpoon directly at the Rat Ogre, spearing it's filthy shoulder. A chain leads back to the metal man's hand and he pulls hard on it. The Rat Ogre is pulled back painfully. The warforged says, "Please press the attack. I cannot hold this forever."

Gate 1 is open. Warforged is standing at M15. Silvered Harpoon in Rat Ogre 3 (10 damage). Rat Ogre counts as grappled.

This must be the "Gus" the halfling was just speaking about. Kurki in hand Dorian looks around the now crowed room not sure of what to make of the newcomers or the unfolding events. The final Rat Ogre stumbles onto it's hands and knees, it's innards becoming outards. It collapses to the ground in it's item spreading pool of fragrant juices.

"Prepare to demo the gatehouse, Gus! This contributes to your grade!" the halfling calls out before ducking back under the door to look in on the third rat ogre.

Gus responds with a curt, "Yes, Sir!" and begins quickly examining the ceiling of the room. He motions to everyone inside and says, "You might want to get out of here quick, I'm going to bring down the ceiling and everything above it. This place needs to be sealed off."

----------------

"Ingot" calls the halfling, "Status report!"

The warforged replies, "Single target. Executed with extreme prejudice. Harpoon proved fully effective."

The halfling jogs up to it, "Good, now please evacuate these... individuals before Gus demos the building."

He walks out the shattered gate 1.

Turning to face this "Gus" Crik gives his tentaclaws hands a quick pas through the sea of undulating fibres that rim his mouth, cleaning the blood and gore from his extremities and gaining a bit of nutrients at the same time.

"Where is our sister, Gus?" he asks glaring at the man with his glowing amber eyes, while three clawed hands and a tentacle point at his chest and one arm jabs over his shoulder behind him where Alessia was, the other tencle pointing into the other room, "that little one -- your brother? What did he do to my sister?" Crik takes a step towards the man. "Where is she?" he asks his antenna moving furiously as his spines click in and out of his carapace in his agitation.

"Whoa there, clicketty-clack! Stand down! You're, uh, sister is in triage back at our camp. If she can be saved, that's where it'll happen. Now either off and get out to safety or help me set these bombs." Gus holds up five pitons, each with a rune in a circle carved into it.

Zephyr watches the creature's head tear off with surprise, both at the spectacle and at her own actions. Landing on the ground beside Medina, she quickly turns behind her as the Halfling tumbles back under the gate towards them. As he shouts off to Ingot, ignoring them and passing them completely, she looks and nods at the others before following him towards and past Ingot. "I don't care if they break this thing, but I don't want to be here when they do.." Eying up the Warforged as she passes it, she tails the bossy little man, trying to emulate a bossy little woman herself as she walks up beside him.

"What were those things? I've never heard of anything like those creatures... Not that we needed you help or anything back there!" Zephyr sniffs at the man. "Though you certainly took your time jumping in!"

Halfling sense motive [roll0]

The halfling stops walking at an all-to-conveniently located rock and climbs up on it before turning to look Zephyr in the eye. "YOUNG LADY. How can you CLAIM to be prepared to take CARE of yourselves if you are SO stupid that you choose to come HERE for your inane little parties?! DID you BOTHER to THINK about the HISTORY of this RUIN?" By this time he's hopping up and down in fury. "THIS is why your KIND has the stereotype THAT YOU enjoy! Mud-brained PARTY ANIMALS to dumb to come IN FROM THE rain!"

He leaps off the rock, taps a fob dangling from a bracelet and watches as the camouflage cover is withdrawn into a small...hobbyhorse? It's kinda like a metal horse, but not. The legs splay out, all four of them, with a plate sized disc facing the ground.

"If your NOT planning to continue WITH your idiocy, go find their vehicles. The ones the bandits USED to get here."

"It is a pleasure you make your acquaintance, Hyde. Yes, I am called Ingot. And I believe friend is too familiar a term to describe my relationship with Mr. Blank. Coworker would be a more accurate descriptor."

Nothing he does shows any sign of deceit.

Tyralisa gives another little screech, this time happier and sounding triumphant when the group takes down the ratogre in front of her. A moment later, the halfling comes marching out from behind the gate, and Tyra glances from one side to the other, alarmed somewhat at these strangers. She doesn't let down her defensive posture, although, since they don't seem to be attacking, she doesn't act hostile yet, either. Knowing several others of the group are still behind the mostly-closed door, Tyra rushes back to it, crouching down awkwardly so she's not completely unready for an attack, and ducking her head under the door so she can see what's going on behind there.

Hearing part of what Crik said, and then the response by the unfamiliar voice as she ducked down to the short height the door was open to, Tyralisa calls out under it, "What? What happened, who's gone? At their camp?" She sounds a little confused, and perhaps a bit panicky; did these strangers take someone away somehow?

Mr. Blank looks up at Moira from his seat. He points northwest.
With an exasperated sign he says, "My people have her. They are tending to her wounds about a day and a half that way by foot. That's the same direction we'll be going as soon as we seal this place off. Follow my instructions and get to her faster or we can step away and leave her to her own faculties while you take your time. It's up to you."

Not going to bother rolling against that Intimidate check, his chance of success is miserable.

It did not feel like they had too much a choice in the whole issue. The first rush of the combat fading away, a hellish pain befell her as she finally realized the deep claw wound that was going through half her chest, and the small puddle of blood she was standing in. Shocked from its intensity, she produced one of the healing potions she had found and downs it to stop the bleeding.

She then approaches her friends in the small groups that they were currently standing there. "I think we need to follow them. They have Alessia, and they are helping her at the moment. We need to stick together now. That's all that counts! We're family."

Seeing Moira's wound, Zephyr reaches out to heal and comfort her, but not before Moira takes care of it herself... She quickly recoils and pretends it never happened. Listening to the situation, Tyralisa frowns and gives a bit of a growl. She doesn't like it one bit, that these people just showed up and somehow stole Alessia away using magic of some sort. Why did they do that?

Once they get back together and Zephyr says what she has to, Tyralisa nods, bristling rather obviously and looking suspiciously around at the strangers. She tries to speak quietly to the others in the group, sounding a little hostile but mostly worried. "I don't like it, I don't understand why they took Alessia. To 'help' her? We could have helped her here... And...isn't magic to transport someone like that...difficult? Why would they use it on a stranger they don't know?" The way she says 'stranger' is especially hostile, and it's clear from her tone and her previous attitudes that Tyra essentially equates strangers with enemies, the same way a 'normal' villager might say 'orc'. "Yeah, definitely stay on our guard."

My activation date hails back to that great war, but I fear I have no recollection farther back than 6 years ago." He walks with Hyde out into the sunlight and away from the gatehouse.
"Beomsfeld was, apparently, a merchant city-state. 16 years it was leveled by a weapon of great power. There were no surviv..."

"As far as anyone knows, there were no survivors. May I ask, Hyde, what your thoughts are on the topic of survivors? I'm sure your answer will be enlightening."

Looking around, Hyde sees Zephyr and the halfling Mr Blank arguing, Moira and Creek seem to be upset, he overhears alessia's name and noticed she's missing, he sees Mr blank point and hears mention of a camp. Hyde doesn't sense anything offputting or deceitful about Ingot, but he's still a stranger, plus his assumption seems to underly a certain understanding already, plus he's pretty sure his siblings wouldnt want him saying too much too soon, especially if they know what happened to Alessia. At least until then, he should tread carefully.
Isn't everyone a survivor of something? Thanks to you all, we are survivors of these beasts, and for that we are all grateful, but please understand that now might not be the best time to speak of such things, at least until we're sure of its truth. I especially wouldn't want to speak for my siblings when they are not all in present company. Tell me more about your friend over there argueing with, and not at all intimidated by my sister?

Now turn the wheels horizontal to the ground and replace the rubber for crystal. There is no engine. There ARE esoteric controls and devices that make no sense.

"Dorian. Run now. It's time to seal those rats inside the city." Gus Platinum pushes Dorian to run ahead.

Dorian runs out at full pelt and stumbles into Hyde.

The gatehouse rumbles and shakes. The interior glows red and smoke gushes out from the upper floors. And then goes quiet. The smoke stops. The light fades. And the upper floors fall straight down into the building, turning an entrance into a solid wall.

"Whoooaaaaaa." Then she turns to Ingot.
"How... How do they work? How do we use them?"

I didn't know whether someone else also wants to be first, and thought we could, in doubt, settle it with a roll.
Maybe simply initiative? I'll just roll a d20 for now.

Crik flinched when the gate house exploded, he had never seen or heard something like that before. Following the others to where these 'boulders' were he watches cautiously with trepidation as the other examine them from up close.

The Kreen stands a few metres away from the things watching Medina from afar. His two tentaclaws pulled close to his body, like those of a mantis while his four arms remain folded across his chest. His spines have been retracted, indicating for those who know him, that he is somewhat relaxed. Much like Medina his head tilts yet continues to rotate as his antenae wave in front and from side to side as if they could feel the strange devices from a distance.

"Medina legh. Sohvad val 'ej Doch law' vIhtahbogh qo' Hur vISov Dun ghah. HIja' vIsov. rut vIhar je."

Moira

Without hesitation, Moira steps forward.

"Me."

Ingot takes Moira by the hand and leads her to a deep green quad with light purple, almost blue, crystals. It patiently assists her mounting the thing. The grips are cold to the touch at first, but quickly warm to her comfort.

Following Ingot's instruction, "Think about standing up slowly. Good, good..." Moira gets the quad off the ground without difficulty. "Now will yourself forward. Easy, EASY!" Moira jets off at about 30mph before slowing down and turning around. After another 5 minutes, she has about mastered the rudimentary skills needed to ride a crystal quad levi-vehicle.

"You are now experienced enough, Moira, to help instruct your friends."

Hyde catches his footing and grabs onto Dorian as they both keep from tumbling over. As they regain their balance, Hyde pats Dorian on the back and nods with a smile. He watches Ingot give Moira the lesson on the magic vehicle. Once confident enough he's got the gist, Hyde finds a quad slightly away from the rest, one with light green, almost aqua crystals under it. He decides he's seen enough to try himself.

Following Zephyr to the odd collection of boulders, Tyralisa shifted a bit in surprise when the boulders turned out to be...some kind of riding vehicles. Then, although the explosion had been warned about, she nearly jumped at it, already on edge and nervous. The wings that had sprouted from her back, still not large enough to carry her, fluttered somewhat as she frowned and glanced about in alarm, but once things settled, she calmed a little, but unlike Crik, she was still very much on edge, what with all these strangers around.

When Dorian comes over to speak with her, and asks about Alessia, the big girl frowns and shakes her head, leaning over a bit to respond quietly to Dorian. "Somehow these people took her away by magic, supposedly to help her. I...don't know what to do other than go with them and hope they're telling the truth."

Moira, meanwhile, takes off on one of the vehicles, while Tyralisa watches while talking to Dorian. She jerks a bit when the girl takes off so fast, concerned about what the thing she's riding is going to do, but as she manages to take control of it properly, Tyra calms a little again. Then, seeing that these things are fast enough that there's no way she could keep up otherwise, she looks around to see if one of them is big enough for her to ride comfortably, considering her size, while also wondering if Crik is going to be able to ride the things, with his insectoid body.

Hyde's ride was remarkably easy. His confidence well placed in his choice of quad.

Tyra will be pleased to see that there are a couple larger quads settled near each other. They do look big enough to fit her and Crik, together if they so chose.

"Wheeeee" She shouts when the thing suddenly accelerates, giving her joy and excitement a voice.

When she stops her quad again, she sees Hyde mounting one and control it with ease, and can't but smile.

"You have to try it!" She says to the others. "Come on, it's easy. I'll explain it to you... And it will also bring us faster to this camp where they tend to Alessia."

She offers to teach anybody who is willing to try and tries to encourage the others to try it. Apparently, she is torn apart by the fun of the new discovery and the need to find Alessia as soon as possible.

Crik walks to one of the larger 'things' near the back. He passes by Dorian and Tyra. When he sees the large crystals that seem to resonate and provide the lift something deep inside of him rises. He is filled with animosity and aversion. His spines eject, and his wings whine. There is something deep within him that is screaming 'danger'. But he has to go to this 'camp' of there’s and -- it seems -- this is the only way.

He looks at Zephyr and Moira and even Hyde zipping around on these things. He pushes the large quad with a clawed foot and pokes its several times with his tentaclaw, before finally mounting. He grips the handles with his two lower claws leaving his upper pair of arms and tentaclaws free to strike should there be trouble. Just think about flying? His legs tense and his wings whir as he imagines himself jumping forward and the quad jerkily rushes forward and then abruptly halts -- Crik grasps the body with his upper arms while squeezing the chassis between his powerfully built legs.

It takes several more tries before he is able to smoothly move forward and backward left right. Although he doesn't ride with the gusto and playfulness of the others it isn't long until he is able to utilise the quad as a reliable means of transport. For him it is simply a tool -- a means to reaching Alessia.

Anything that'll get us to where Alessia is quicker..." She frowns a little dubiously at these devices, but proceeds on over to it. Looking the thing over and reaching under it for a moment to lift it up curiously, examining the thing even though she has no idea what she was really looking at, then she mounts the vehicle and waits for Moira to instruct them.

Gus calling out for her makes her pause and look over in that direction, frowning and wondering just what that was about, but since she figures Moira can speak for herself, she doesn't see the need to point her out to Gus.

Gus stammers hard, "It's uh... It's uh... It's uh... The letter... I'm sorry I read it! It has your name in it. It's from your father. Alessia is your sister!"

For the moment, Moira is completely puzzled. From my father? How... She had never known her father, her mother had always said, he was gone... Mesmerized as she is, Zephyr is actually faster than her...

Zephyr rolls her eyes, leaving back against her emerald Levi-hicle.
"Yes, we know. We are all family, brothers and sisters. We are quite looking forward to getting our sister back." Zephyr ends with a pointed glare.

"Um... Sisters by blood... Same father!" Gus blurts out.

Why has Alessia never said anything? You can practically see the wheels turning behind her forehead. When she speaks, it sounds as if she has a dry mouth and a lump in her throat, half from anxiety, half from shock. She hesitates to reach into the pouch and read the note. After all, it is still Alessia's pouch, and she had chosen not show her the note. Feels wrong to look at it...

"Let's just find her." She turns around to see how her family does. Everyone seemed more or less capable with the levis.

"Everybody. Let's move. Alessia's probably already wondering what's keeping us."

She looks at Gus. "Lead us to her. Please."

"MOUNT UP! WE GO!" Mr. Blank calls out. Gus and Ingot are spurred into action and the three lead the party off to their camp.

The day passes without advent and, as night falls, Ingot calls up to Mr. Blank, "Shouldn't we be seeing signs of a camp fire? Miss Haste is rarely so neglectful."

Mr. Blank looks around at the horizon where Ingot had indicated and sets a grim expression on his small face. He falls back into your group, "The rest is an open straightaway. Think about running. And hold on!" With that he rockets away at twice your speed.

The land flashes past you at sixty miles an hour. Sights and sounds mean nothing when traveling at this speed for the first time.

After an hour of riding like this you see Mr. Blank up ahead fishtail hard. His quad tumbles and come to a stop upside down. But Mr. Blank is already sprinting the last couple yards.

He is sobbing over a female body as you pull to a stop next to what can only be a torn apart campsite. Tents and pavilions are collapsed and torn up. A levi-vehicle built to carry equipment and fitted with 8 crystal pads lies on its side. Bodies, eight of them not including whoever Mr. Blank is attending to, rest around a burnt red and white tent. Arrows perforate their backs while water buckets are upturned either in their hands or on the ground in front of them.

Moira

Seeing the scene in front of her, Moira slows down her levi just in time before tumbling over and falling to her knees. This was too much.

No.

For the second time on this day, she sees someone tending to a corpse.
For the second time on this day, they are too late. Helpless.
She feels the shadow growing behind her, taking away her vision, her other senses.

No. Please.

It does not even hurt. She rather feels going completely numb from the situation. Through a veil, she hears Crik calling Alessia's name.

No. Please. She is my sister.

She feels like the shadow is reaching for her heart, slowly surrounding it, not squeezing it, but holding it in place. Stopping its pounding. Keeping it from bursting into pieces.
From far away, she hears Zephyr's words but they make no sense, it is as if Zephyr is speaking in a foreign tongue.
Suddenly, she feels old. As if every breath she takes is a burden.

They are so young, and we are so old. Yet they will break before we do. This time, it is not even her thinking anymore. The shadow has taken over.

We must be released from this shell.

Her hands start clawing into the solid ground. For a mere second, claws manifest on its ends, but quickly vanish again.

Just let go. Release us. They are weak. We are strong.

The shadow promises both comfort and agony as it completely coats her soul, string by string cutting off its connection to this plane of existence, leaving it a dull spark in endless gray.

We don't need them.

A single string left.

Without them we would be -
NOTHING.
The spark flashes in blue defiance.

Without them, there is no me. And without me, there is no you.

Moira's eyes flash in bright blue as she starts sobbing but no tears are coming, her hands trying to break through the ground over and over again. "Alessia."

Zephyr watches Ingot leave, a stoic statue lumbering into the distance. She wonders if that's how she appears amidst her mostly-frantic family, either weeping as the Halfling with his corpse, or clawing at the world in pain.

But somebody has to keep them together. Composed, as Mother always was... even when the raiders began to show up, slowly picking them off. Even as she slowly passed in her bed.

At least she could comfort one of her own family. Zephyr hears Medina, now closest to her, start to fall apart in her Levihicle. Sliding off of her own, she jumps onto the back of the bluish girl's transport, giving her a firm hug from behind. "It's alright, Medina." Zeph purred, "It's been a hard day. We'll settle down soon, and make a safe space for ourselves."

Alright, Zephyr votes to find and make a safe camp. We're too weak to chase off after dragons, and we've lost too many today already. We've force marched ourselves out of town, and sped here to find Alessia... Too much, too quickly.

Maybe we can try to find a cave to fortify? Maybe Halfling knows a good spot, close enough to a road that we can travel for nearby trade?

Ingot's walk ends after a twenty minute hike. It faces a smallish lake, no more than two hundred feet across at it's widest point. There is a rock outcropping in the center of the lake.

Ingot looks around to make sure it's alone. Confident of privacy in it's hour of mourning, the warforged walks into the water. Minutes later it reappears climbing up the outcropping. It glistens wetly in the fresh dark of night, the full moon providing all the light it needs.

Ingot withdraws a tool kit and begins disassembling it's torso. Before long, the steel removed is repurposed into some strange contraption...

The silver harpoon is now disassembled as well. The silver shaft strikes the steel contraption. The sound is crisp and clear. It echoes off the water.

Ingot let's the sound dissipate. It draws the sharp tip of the harpoon across the steel. This new sound is not so beautiful as the first. The harpoon scratches across the steel faster and faster. Different screeches and wails echo off the water as the pain is exposed to the sky.

An hour passes with the sound of pained steel pouring forth. Without warning it ceases. Ingot reassembles itself and it's weapon. It stands up in the rock. It's fists raise up into the air. It's clasps it's hands together.

And smashed the rock below it. And it reappears the action over and over again. When it's done there is no more rock.

Ingot walks back to camp in silence.

Hyde comes to the edge of the woods where it meets a small lake just as Ingot is walking out onto the rock in the center. He ducks down and watches as ingot starts ripping metal off his body and hyde is taken aback. Then he hears the clang of metal on metal, a much more pleasent noise than the many that came after, the sound made the hair on the back of hydes neck go up and give him goosebumps as he winced. he's actually mourning suddenly feeling slightly ashamed at his own distrust. Hyde walks back to camp just as ingot starts smashing the rock. Suddenly aware of his own sadness and gaining slight respect for ingot in the process.

Gus Platinum walks up to Medina and Zephyr.
"Marion was to be his wife in a week." he says, gesturing to the halfling. "She was everything to him."

"And the pile of rust? Scalpel. Ingot's best friend and the only thing it remembers at all past 6 years ago."

He sits down with a grunt. "My uncle is going to blow up when we tell him about this. He was going to officiate the wedding. He repaired Ingot and Scalpel. He's a cleric in the church of Heironeous, you know. Has a major business, blessed by the church. Makes gobs of gold. He'll wasn't the guys who did this dealt with. Probably be willing to pay well anyone willing to hunt down the zealots who did this."

He takes out a small flask and takes a long swig.

"Some will pay sooner than others." Crik drops Alessia's bloody and charred armour on the ground. "Maybe I should reunite that one with his love." Crik turns his head to face where Mr. Blank is cradling his fiancée Marion. His spines are still out, and his tentaclaws are no longer folded close to his body but poised at the ready. He looks towards Moira then back to Gus. "That one," he continues indicating Mr. Blank with a barbed razor sharp tentacle, "took Alessia, and now she is dead." He turns to stare down at the man, "My sister is dead -- her body stolen. What do you think I should do about that?"

While those giant rats chewed on the rest of you, could you have saved her? She'd've ended up eaten along with the rest! These bodies you see here, high ranking healers every one! If she had ANY chance of survival it was here! Marion Haste was apprenticed to the king's high court medical expert! What more do you want? We lost friends and family too! Save your wrath for the ones who slaughtered these innocents!"

Hyde comes out of the woods unnoticed just in time to see Creek poised to attack, looking at the halfling with the lifeless female in his arms. Coming up to the side of creek as Gus stwps in front and tries to calm him down.
He's right creek, i dont think they are our enemies and they certainly aren't the ones you should be angry with, they're in just as much pain as we are right now. I think we should at least hear them out... Gus seems to have a good idea, and right now i want to get whatever did this and avenge Markus.

"These know nothing." he says turning to Hyde. "Moira knows the outside. If they are so smart why are they all dead? Good idea? Look at this one so soft and pink and weak. Where are his teeth or claws or horns, his skin I could cut it with grass. We should leave these to their own affairs and tend to ours. They have brought us nothing but loss."

The mutated Thri-Kreen leans over Gus, "And we could have healed our sister, do not think we are lacking. From what I see it is you and your little friend who are in need. Almost any of my brothers or sisters could tear you apart. You are soft. We don't need any of those strange things you depend on those 'levs' or those sticks that destroyed the building. If my siblings want to let you and your friends go unpunished so be it."

He turns and makes his way towards Moira kneeling on the ground, muttering to himself as he walks.

"Pagh loq lu', pong Mej yIn neh chah 'e' vIhar. hIja' ghah tuvbogh ngodqoq luhar 'ey. mamej Ha'dIbah 'ach chaq tlhoy ror!"

Tyralisa (http://mnemnosyne.com/D&D%20Stuff/Characters/Tyralisa-Evolutionist/Tyralisa.htm)
Tyralisa spends the ride focused and quiet, seeming almost distant. When they arrive, her wings fluttered and she growled softly, seeing the place where Alessia was taken destroyed, and started dismounting the vehicle she'd been riding, moving slowly forward as her tail swishes from side to side, then beat hard on the ground, the spiked tips of the twin tails leaving little holes in the ground as she clenches and unclenches her claws, seeming distant, almost lost in the moment and stunned. So much was going wrong already, and now they seemed to have lost someone. She growls softly as she hears Zephyr's explanation, but remains somewhat distant, out of it for a moment, having trouble processing.

She blinked back into the moment at Crik's comments, and Gus's sudden exclamation. Stomping suddenly toward them, she growls as Crik is responding to Gus. "He's right. She was stolen away from us without anyone asking. Without seeing if we had the means to help her." Her body shakes, her tail swishing in increased agitation and anger, her claws opening and closing as she made a gesture equivalent to a human clenching and unclenching their fists. "We have both healing magic and skills available, at least enough to have stabilized her...and those creatures died quickly." Her eyes narrow slightly. "The only thing that keeps me from starting my revenge with those who took her away from me is...that if you hadn't shown up she probably would have died anyway along with more of us, because we weren't being very successful dealing with those creatures." She snorts, shaking her head. "But don't assume your thinking you knew what to do extended beyond showing us how to deal with those things. You made things better in one way, and worse in another."

Her body shakes a bit more, glancing over toward the man mourning the woman, looking like she very much wants to start her revenge with attacking him, since he was apparently the one responsible for having teleported Alessia away, but instead, she stalks off to the treeline, and takes her anger out on a moderate-sized tree, one about fifteen feet tall with a foot-thick trunk, clawing at it repeatedly and tearing deep grooves in its trunk as she shredded it in a matter of moments before giving it a powerful punch and sending it toppling away from her, its trunk cleaved most of the way through by her claws.
Lots of moving forward, I see. Was too busy yesterday to reply, unfortunately, so compressing a bit of Tyra's responses here.

Sidenote about the tree: Wood with a hardness of 5 and 10hp per inch would take Tyra an average of 0.9 rounds to go through an inch by attacking with both claws (10.5 average damage per claw, minus 5 for hardness, so total of 5.5 average inflicted per claw for 11 damage per round on average), so she'd pretty much tear through a foot-thick trunk in less than a minute, since once she's more than halfway through the rest would start collapsing under its own weight.

Also, stealing Ripptor's cool 'box' for posts, just 'cause I like it.

Zephyr gives Medina a last squeeze, then slides off of her Levi. Looking at the halfling and his corpse, "The correct retribution for a slain loved one is repayment in kind. No more punishment is due this Mr. Blank today." Watching the small creature weep, thinking about what Gus said about rewards, and what Dorian mused on their future, Zeph moves to one of the larger Levis and meanders it to the center of the scene. With a tired sigh, she lays out the remaining bodies carefully over it for carriage.

Once that chore is complete, Zephyr returns to the small man with her carrion-carriage Levi, and kneels beside him. "However, while our sister is gone, your lover's body remains. Shall we take it to your church, to be cared for appropriately?"

Maybe we make contact with these church people, get in favor with them, and take on some vengeance-questing?

If we can save the girl and/or the cadre of professional healers, or even just put their bodies to rest, this church should be grateful enough...

Being placed on the ground she seems to remember something, but before she could act on it, Crik starts to shout about him believing that Alessia is alive. Moira can smell her sisters blood all over the scene. She does not know what to believe anymore, but also feels to tired to find it out. For now, Alessia was gone, and apparently there was no hot trail, otherwise some of the others would be on it already. She drops to her knees and pulls open the little bag that was given to her earlier, and takes out the note to read it.

It takes her much longer to read it than the length of the note would suggest. Maybe it is because she reads it over and over again.

When she finally lets the note sink, she just sits silent, staring at nothing in particular. So much had changed. And while somewhat certain she can never be truly happy again, the note seems to emit a certain warmth to her. Her father. Their father. A message from the past. From a lifetime ago. Hers anyway.

Andrew could never foretell the things that happened. And maybe his allies are no more. But at this point there is not a lot to hold on to. Moira carefully folds the note, puts it into the bag and stashes it near her heart under her armor.

From her kneeling position she looks around to see how the others are reacting to Crik's claims.

Looking over at Crik when he exclaims that Alessia is alive, Tyralisa seems a little thoughtful as she follows through his line of logic. There is perhaps some sense to it, she figures. Tired after the day they've had, Tyra stands next to the shorn and toppled stump of the tree she'd clawed down with her bare hands, and slumps against it while the bodies are moved, eventually sitting on the ground with it at her back. Her eyes drift upward as she stares off into the sky for a long moment, wondering if what Creek is saying was really plausible. She barely notices, as people get ready to leave, her thoughts mixing with exhaustion as they run away with her, until someone actually calls her attention to get her moving. Groaning a little, she trudges over to the larger levi that she'd selected and Dorian had ridden along with her on, and climbs on without even thinking to discuss or tell anyone what she thinks they should do. After all, that has never been a normal part of the end of her day in the past, so it doesn't even strike her as something that needs to be talked about, in her tired state.

The half hour trip through the dark went by quietly. The widens slightly about the time you come upon a cave.
The cave isn't very tall, 9' at the highest point, but it is pretty deep. And , judging by the dirt and dust, unused for quite a long time. Preparing the cave for camp takes only a couple minutes, even with the sleeping folks asleep. As close as the cave mouth is to the river, no one argues when Medina lays down just under the surface of the water to sleep. In fact, it's not long before everyone shy of Ingot and Crik are sound asleep.

But you do this time. It's a short dream, but powerful and unforgettable.
A dragon. No, more than a dragon. One of the two most ancient and powerful dragons. A god.
And yet, for such a being to be trussed up so... Chains of black glass bind the draconian form tightly across it's shimmering metallic form, painfully limiting it's ability to move.
Reflected in the glass chains are faces, evilly laughing faces.

Crik feels the voice of Okk in his head, "They quicken as they sleep." he hears as his vision fades, "you must keep up." The discomfort is delicious as he feels his muscles rearranging themselves within his chitinous carapace. When his senses return, he can see the sun edging out over the horizon.

Moira

Not for the first time, Moira awakes from the foul smell of the grave and the buzzing of flies. For the first time, however, there is a mundane explanation for it after she opens her eyes.

She gets up, out of the cave and stretches herself, yawning. While doing so, she notices an even further developed flexility in her joints. With a certain relaxing joy, she bends her body in different directions finding the new even less human appearing limits of her joints and ligatures.

As this works even better without armor on, she undresses to her underclothes, revealing that the boney protrusion, formerly only exhibited by her spine and parts of her shoulder, has spread over the rest of her shoulder and her arms.

After finishing the rest of her morning routine, she kneels down in a quiet place. She gags a bit until a strain of a thick, dark substance leaves her mouth. Swiftly, she forms into a simple, crude tool, resembling a hatchet of some sort. When the resin dries, she looks happy with the result and straps it to her thigh.

Seeing Zephyr return with a whole lot of breakfast, she greets her with a large but half guilty feeling smile:

"You look awesome today, sister. And I see you had a successful morning?"

Apparently, she feels a bit guilty for not having put her priority on hunting this morning.

Tyralisa (http://mnemnosyne.com/D&D%20Stuff/Characters/Tyralisa-Evolutionist/Tyralisa.htm)
The previous night, Tyra found a nice spot on the ground of the cave, laid down and curled up a bit, falling asleep easily simply laying on the ground without any covering or padding, especially considering how tired she was.

As she wakes up, she yawns and stretches, getting up, careful of the ceiling of the cave in case it was short enough to bump her. Stepping outside into the light, she stretches fully, the tiny wings that sprouted the previous day now a bit larger and more solid-looking as they flap a few times for exercise, while her tails look considerably thicker, and the spines that adorned her tail-tips seemed to have gotten much firmer and sharper.

She frowns a bit, recalling she'd simply eaten what others had given her last night, and decides to head off and gather some food for herself. When she returns some time later, she's brought back a trio of small game birds; food for herself and plenty to spare. Despite her general lack of civilized trappings, she sits down to cook the food she got rather than biting into the birds raw.

"Morning, everyone." She calls it out moderately softly, as she returns to camp, having wandered off without saying anything when she woke up. Sitting down to cook, while she's waiting for it to be ready, she pulls out the rucksacks of unknown provenance that she picked up from the supply shed and opens them up to go through them and find out just what they're carrying around.

She's taking 10 on the survival check, so she gets 17 at the moment, so she brought back enough for herself and three others.

And then, she is finally going to open up those rucksacks and see what we picked up!

Zephyrinque Sanayd (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1261713)

Zephyr beams at her green sister, "It's a lovely morning, sweet and ripe for the picking!" Handing the fish to Medina and her cooking skills, she wrinkles her nose back and forth. "Speaking of ripe..." Zeph seeks out Gus to ask him how much longer the trip will take, as the bodies don't appear they will hold much longer. Maybe a tarp?

Gotta get the dead back home...

Crik-Sa Korr

For Moira:

There is a screaming roar that sounds like Crik shireking then you hear his voice in you mind:

"Moira!!! Jihvad Sop Qib ghewmey lu' soh Sop je yinisqo....'"

"Moira!!!My shadow ate me -- don't let yours eat you too..."

Then silence.

Gus is up and outside, finishing a polish on one of his two harpoons.

"If we ride hard, no stops, we should be there by nightfall."

HYDE

Groggy and a little sore from sleeping against a tree and the levi vehicle, Hyde slowly wakes up to the sounds of people already working. Hyde gets up and goes in search of food, at least trying to be self sufficient, smelling the fish that Medina is cooking is making his stomache grumble. Hydes gonna see what he can find before breaking down and asking for some.
[roll0]

When Hyde has found something (or when he's given up and decided to grovel) he notices that Tyra has begun unpacking the rucksacks and started laying out the items on the ground, he walks over to them and starts helping her arrange and look through them.
"some of this stuff looks useful, i like this dagger, but whats with all this salt? Is there anything in it?"

Hyde
Hyde can feel somethings not quite right with the items but he can't make it out, sort of a tingling in the back of his head when he concentrates on the area. He looks at the bag holding the salt
how much salt is there in this thing Hyde says as he picks up the bag and turns it over to pour out the salt and WAY more salt is falling out than can logically fit in the bag, sifting his hands through it dor a minute (more tingling) he moves onto the other items, picking up the dagger he appreciates the ornate snake on the handle, wondering who its owner might have been. He also looks at the rod with a button on the end for a minute, fighting his curiousity to push it.
Hydes sits there in front of the items almost lost in a trance, like theres something he should see but isnt there, but something in the back of his mind tells him so... it feels almost like he's being watched but not quite the same. He sits in front of the items in silence trying to figure out what it is
since we're not in rounds i figure i could do all three, assuming there is a magical item in the group id like to think my examining of them is enough. For fluff purposes i'd like hyde to not even realize that hes doing it if possible, he just starts to see the aura or whatever is there
[roll0] for if there are i, i can tell what and where

The pile of salt hasn't stopped growing just yet. There's gotta be... 1,640 pounds of it.

Nice Nat20!

There are four items twinkle before your eyes.
The rod. Immovable.
The dagger. Manyfanged.
The all of rope. Endless.
The salt-filled rucksack. Heward's Handy Heavy Haversack.

The salt, well, it's just salt.

HYDE

I THINK I GOT IT! hyde stares at the items for a minute until he sees a faint glow that seems to disappear as he stops concentrateing. One of the glows is coming from the button on the rod... and almost as if remembering a name it seems to come to him.hey Tyra check this out, something tells me i know what this does, don't ask me how cuz I have no idea it just came to me, but watch this Hyde takes the rod and holds it horizontally in front of him and then pushes the button. It seems to float in the air in front of us and nothing seems to move it...The word immoveable kept coming to mind whenever i looked back at this so i had to try as hyde steps back and looks on in Wonder at the rod floating in front of him.

Hydes starting to understand the tingling a little after he realized what the rod does, he goes to look back at the pile and concentrates... the sack that held the salt, the knife, and the rope... he picks up the knife and rope...manyfanged?... endless? hyde could only see one "fang" on the knife so the word confused him. And the rope didnt LOOK endless... it looked to be maybe thirty feet or so...hmmm. Hyde takes the knife and tries cutting the rope, as he does, the knife seems to seperate into four ethereal looking blades and slice the rope into four little pieces off the end... which immediately dissappear and reappear onto a now uncut rope.woah, so thats what manyfanged means

When Crik's voice suddenly appears in her head, she shakes visibly and upon hearing the rest, she is petrified for a second or two, unable to really process the information. Shadow? Eaten? Nonononono... Whatever it means, it can't be good.
She jumps up, and runs, trying to find Crik.

loDnI', nuqDaq SoH? Has anyone seen Cric?

"Brother, where are you?"

Moira.

It's hard to follow Crik's tracks right off, but you do end up successful. For several hundred yards you follow his trail... Until you find yourself standing at the edge of the river. Here the tracks end. Searching the banks finds no evidence of his passing.

Moira

"No! No! No! You promised! I am not letting you go!"

She speeds back to the camp, clapping her hands together as the few adults usually did to call them back into class. She is not used to speak up in front of everyone, but now is not the time for hesitation. She also asks the NPC group to listen to her.

When everyone has come together, she reports:

"Everybody, listen up! Crik is missing. Just a few minutes ago, I have received a message from him... mentally... where he said that his... shadow ate him. No idea what that means, but Crik's tracks end at the river over there. Maybe someone snatched him... Ya, I know this sounds crazy. Maybe he just jumped over the river. But... Something is not right here, and he might well need our help. Do those levis work on water? And when has each of you seen Crik for the last time? In my case, it was before going to sleep when he told me he'd take the nightwatch."

Moira is clearly very agitated.

Ingot speaks up, "I joined Crik on the watch. It was well that I did. He went into some sort of trance during the night. He remained in that state for several hours as his body twitched and writhed. At dawn he returned to his senses and walked off into the trees looking for food. That is the last I have seen him."

Gus nods, a look of concern on his face. Mr. Blank looks, well, blank. Almost no emotion at all.

Dorian

Uncurling his tails, Dorian looks about. "Crik is gone?!" He runs to meet Moira, while tugging Tyra along with him (most likely to no avail).

I updated my sheet. I also upgraded Pheromones to its second form, which means peeps like me more.

"Dammit!" Medina punches the ground, and her newly formed appendages join her in that action. She seems surprised by them for a moment, then returns to her anger. Taking a deep breath, she says, "We can't afford to lose anyone else. And last I saw him was before we went to bed." Turning to other group, she asks "Do the levis work over water? It should be easier to search if they do."

LairdMaon

"Yes, they do. Though not safely. They are much more difficult to control over nonsolid surfaces." Ingot says.

Moira

"Is the problem the steering or keeping them in the air? I... I think I'd also know a way to get myself to the other side without further help. Then I could see whether the tracks continue there... If not, Crik was either snatched from the air or traveled down or up the river..."

LairdMaon

"They have less traction over water. Steering is comprised. Acceleration as well. And they tend to dip into the water. That can lead to the whole device being dragged into the current." Ingot supplies.

Tyralisa (http://mnemnosyne.com/D&D%20Stuff/Characters/Tyralisa-Evolutionist/Tyralisa.htm)
Fiddling a bit with the things she pulls out of the pack, she looks up with a raised eyebrow when Hyde manages to determine what they all are very quickly. "Huh." She finds it curious, both the objects and the fact that Hyde determined what they are, but is then distracted by Moira's agitation about Creek being missing.

Standing up immediately and leaving the knick-knacks on the ground, Tyra frowns, then follows Moira to the river, where Creek's tracks end. Looking around for a few moments, while everyone is talking, Tyralisa just walks into the river, starting to swim her way to the other side once it gets up to her chest in depth. Once she gets there, she sniffs around, trying to locate the familiar scent of Creek, while also looking and searching about.

Assuming the water is not 'stormy' or worse, Tyra will take 10 on her swim check for an 18, which can get her across even if it is 'rough'.

Hyde

Hyde seems to snap to as soon as tyra gets up and he immediately notices the distress and moira yelling Crik was missing? Hyde grabs the backpack that he saw glowing and hoped he guessed right, that it was similar to that strange chest they came across holding all the gold. He hurriedly grabs all the items scattered on the ground and throws them into the pack. As he thought, they all easily fit. He also grabs a bunch of the salt, about 20lbs or so, not knowing what it was for and that it might come in handy. Hyde jumps on his levi and follows the rest of the group towards the river.
