Hey all,

I'm looking for magic masks.

The Master of Masks (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20070105a&page=3) PrC has the following class ability:

Mask Specialist (Su): Starting at 3rd level, you innately enhance the abilities of any magic mask you wear (such as the mask of the skull, DMG 262). If the mask creates an effect that requires a saving throw, the save DC increases by 2. If the mask grants a bonus on skill checks, that bonus is increased by 2. Otherwise, the mask's caster level is treated as two higher.

So far, I've found the following (I'm trying to avoid custom magic items, if possible):

Crystal Mask of Detection (MIC p.90) +2 skill check
Crystal Mask of Discernment (MIC p.90) +2 skill check
Crystal Mask of Dread (MIC p.91) +2 skill check
Crystal Mask of Insight (MIC p.91) +2 skill check
Crystal Mask of Knowledge (MIC p.91) +2 skill check
Crystal Mask of Psionic Craft (MIC p.92) +2 skill check
Fanged Mask (MIC p.99) +2 DC
Mask of Lies (MIC p.115) +2 skill check
Mask of Mastery (MIC p.193) +2 DC
Mask of the Skull (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#maskoftheSkull) +2 DC
Mask of the Tiger (MIC p.200) +2 skill check
Moonstone Mask (MIC p.118) +2 skill check
Raptor's Mask (MIC p.210) +2 skill check

...any others?

Cheers - T

There are some Soulmelds with "Mask" in the name:
- Silvertongue Mask
- Basilisk Mask
- Great Raptor Mask
... etc.

Those are not magic items, but each is a "magic mask".

Is there not applicable text, I seem to remember reading how soulmelds act as magic items.

They take up the slot of items.

Question, here: Doesn't the Mask of the Skull fly off of your face when used, thus removing the bonuses from Mask Specialist before it reaches its target?

Well since the specific text of the PrC ability calls out the Mask of the Skull, I'd probably say it's OK.

Unfortunately the definition of what a mask is is vague at best. Does it need to have mask in the name?

Yeah, what counts as a "mask" would matter a lot. If it's anything that takes up the Face slot, it's going to expand the usefulness quite a bit. All of the Veils and Goggles and so on would be part of it. (I could see someone using Clark Kent/Superman as an argument for including goggles and lenses). But if it's limited to things with "Mask" in the name, there aren't all that many.

I guess you could custom order a pair of magic goggles to be made as a mask instead... Theoretically anything that goes on your face could have a mask-shape and name instead of a goggle-shape.

There are a number of masks in Dragon Magazine issues. http://www.aeolia.net/dragondex/magic-items.html

They take up the slot of items.

I'd say that counts as "wearing it", and so that ability should apply to "mask" soulmelds too.

This might be reaching, but the Darkmask PrC from Lords of Darkness has its third level ability Dark Embrace, which manifests a mask on your face you can put a spell in and then command to latch onto an enemy.

Nice list.

From that, I see some items have been re-printed in hardcover books, like the Ebon Mask (Dragon Magic, p.100). However that specific mask is not improved by this PrC feature -- it gives you water breathing, resist 5 acid, and +1 natural armor. No skills, no spell-like abilities.

This is making me want to make an Incarnate character who goes into Master of Masks.

...though a quick look around reminds me that not one of the three Incarnate classes gets Bluff, Disguise, or Perform as class skills. Gotta figure out the most efficient ways to get those three...

-EDIT-

Be a human Druid at level 1 and take Greensinger Initiate and either Apprentice (Entertainer) or City Slicker (if you really wanna throw your character motivations for an interesting twist)?

Totemists get more types of Mask-melds.

Bluff & Disguise are good for getting into Chameleon, which might be the way you salvage the last 10 levels of your character.

Three? Is that a chaotic incarnate joke? Regardless, incarnate keeps the same skill list for any alignment. You can get Bluff from LE Soulborn or from Necrocarnate. A Changeling rogue dip might also help, since it might have some affiliation for the mask related class.

Three. Incarnate, Totemist, Soulborn.

Magic of Faerun has a few that weren't reprinted in the MIC: Mirror Mask, Moonstone Mask, White Skull Mask.

Races of Faerun has Mask of the Implacable.

Unapproachable East has a bunch: 8 different Hathran Masks and Shaporyl's Mask.

Dragon Magic has Ebon Mask.

Three. Incarnate, Totemist, Soulborn.

I think he was throwing shade at the Soulborn, much like people skip over the underwhelming Soulknife and Divine Mind when talking about psionic classes.

Hathran Mask is very useful.
