One of the nice things about bows and crossbows is that there is a decent ammount of variety in the bolts/arrows you can use. For one you can have the right special materials needed for any critter on hand, but more than that there are some cool utility arrows/bolts scattered about.

Dragonsbreath arrows (RotW) to burninate the countryside. Splinterbolts (Dragon 349) to shotgun-blast a 30 ft cone of enemies (there is bound to be some abuse to be had with that thing...). Arrows/Bolts tipped with Thunderstones, Tanglefoot bags and Alchemists Fire... all of these are actual things.

Yet something as simple as an arrow with a hollow compartment to put notes into isn't a raw thing.

So I thought I'd ask, what other kinds of novelty/utility ammunition you think should be possible to craft.

On a different note, what are everyone's favorite +1 WSAs to put on Arrows/Bolts?

Bola arrows could be a thing, arrows with harpoon heads for a variation of harpoon rules could be cool too. Put spell storing on a bundle of arrows and have FUN!

Custom as in completely made up?

Signal bolt: Explodes in the air with a harmless flash of light after flying 100 feet or upon impact. The color may be chosen upon creation of the ammo.

Faint evocation; CL 5th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, flare; Price +20 gp per piece of ammo.

Homing arrow: The arrow flies up to 50 feet, stopping immediately before any wall, creature or other obstacle. Then it flies towards the nearest creature. It also acts as a seeking arrow, negating any miss chances. Unlike a seeking arrow it may also find invisible creatures, though anything that thwarts divination magic negates this ability.

Strong divination; CL 12th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, true seeing; Price +3 bonus. Maybe applied to a ranged weapon or ammo.

Bag of holding portable hole arrow: Upon impact the arrow has the effect of dropping a portable hole into a bag of holding: All creatures within a 10 foot radius are drawn into the Astral Plane (no save) and the arrow is destroyed. Any effect that protects against dimensional travel, such as dimensional anchor, negates this effect.

Overwhelming conjuration; CL 21st; Craft Wondrous Item, secret chest. Price +30,000 gp per piece of ammo. May only be applied to ammo.

Trap finding arrow: Upon impact this arrow summons a 50 lb. fat mindless (but living) gnome drone that stands where summoned for 3 rounds and dances a little jig. The gnome does not harm any creature that the arrow may have been hit. It has 3 HP and provokes an attack of opportunity every round. After 3 rounds, if brought to 0 HP, or otherwise killed the gnome disappears. In spite of the name this arrow possesses no special ability to find traps other than the potential for the gnome to trigger one.

moderate conjuration; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, summon monster II; Price +2 bonus. May only be applied to ammo.

I've been contemplating the use of Black Sand or Voidstone for ammo in projectile weapons. Especially if you can find a way to make the Black Sand (or black glass made from the sand?) lodge in and stay in contact with the target until they could say... make a Heal check or a Fort save to remove it.
