Can i cast thunderwave, playing on a 5x5 grid, diagonally? Is so, is it 9 squares as norma,l or six?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. You can place yourself at one of the cubes corners and it would still cast as a 9x9. You can't cast it in a diamond shape as far as I know though.

Edit: It should look like this.

Sorry I meant 9 squares. But can I cast a spell diagonally on the grid as opposed to vertically or horizontally

RAW, I don't think you can, though your DM might rule that it is allowed (so ask him/her).

I'm not sure if the DMG has special rules of how to do this on a grid, but the default assumption is theater-of-the-mind. So I don't see why not. It's still a 15-foot cube. But then, I'd even allow the wizard to squat and cast the cube above them to get every Medium-sized or larger creature surrounding them.

How about this?

Yeah, you' re right. For a diagonal setup, this would be the way to go.

As I said before, it's not RAW-legal as far as I know, but fighting on a grid isn't the base assumption of 5e, unlike previous editions, so there's more flexibility in the rules. You should really ask your DM this, not the internet.

Yes, he originally said no, but one player fought him on it saying why not diagonally?

If the DM said no, that's the end of it. Remember rule 0.
