The Savage Frontier, the North, is a cold, rugged, sparsely populated land of snow-capped mountains, rocky hills, sprawling forests, and foggy vales. Isolated strongholds, ancient burial mounds, and the ruins of many forgotten empires dot the vast landscape. Bounded by the Sea of Swords to the west and the desert of Anauroch to the east, the Savage Frontier extends as far north as Icewind Dale, and as far south as the town of Daggerford. Old roads stretch across this great expanse, linking the dwarven strongholds and mines in the mountains to the coastal settlements, frontier towns, and fortified outposts of humans and other folk. These roads are long, lonely, and poorly defended, making them dangerous to traverse. In fertile valleys, towns and cities have sprung up, separated by dozens if not hundreds of miles of untamed wilderness haunted by bandits, barbarians, and monsters.

Evil dragons stirred into action by their dark queen, Tiamat, threatened the settlements of the Savage Frontier for a time. Ultimately, they were defeated and forced to withdraw to their lairs, while Tiamat was banished to the Nine Hells. Fear of the dragons’ wrath has faded quickly with the coming new threat: giants. The peoples of the North are no strangers to giant incursions. Frost giants have long claimed the Spine of the World as their demesne, and hill giants are known to scrounge for food in the untamed hills. But now, in the past couple months, giants of every kind have emerged from their strongholds in force to threaten civilization as never before- and not just frost giants and hill giants, but also stone giants, fire giants, and cloud giants. All of the giants are in an uproar. Reports of giant attacks throughout the North have reached the coastal cities of Luskan, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep, stoking fears that the giants are waging war against humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk.

Your travels have lead you to the coastal city of Waterdeep. A sprawling city, rich with trade and culture, on the edge of the Savage Frontier. For reasons of your own, you came to the city looking for adventure, purpose, understanding, for a challenge, companionship, wealth, glory, or a mixture of all. Despite the differences, you all found yourselves drawn to a densely packed city square. Upon the stage normally reserved for executions, stood a herald of the Lord’s Alliance. “Hear Ye! Denizens of Waterdeep, the Lord’s Alliance seek service for coin. You’ve all heard the rumors surrounding the neighboring town of Nightstone. The Lord’s Alliance offers 50 gold to any adventurer whom helps secure the town of Nightstone.” Indeed, the city had been bustling over the news coming from the southern roads. Based on your faction affiliations you’ve heard the following:

Lord’s Alliance: Strongest force in the region, but stretched thin with the increasing number of attacks. Looking to lighten their load and protect the region by offering coin in exchange for the severed heads of dangerous beasts, dragons, and giants. From the Alliance posts throughout the area, the members of the Lord’s Alliance know all commerce from Nightstone has stopped.

Harpers: While the Harper presence is strong in Waterdeep, the faction hasn’t been able to reach any contact within the area with information regarding the town of Nightstone. Rumbles within the Harpers speak about the black-stone obelisk, for which the town is named after.

Order of the Gauntlet: The Order has been busy the last few months preparing for another battle between good and evil. Man and giant. The Order has no knowledge about the case in Nightstone, but suspect an evil force, needing a good smiting, is behind the attack.

Emerald Enclave: Little is known about the current situation in Nightstone, but for months the Enclave has warned of a growing imbalance within the natural order. News of an attack doesn’t surprise the Enclave, but so close… so soon.

Zhentarim: The Zhentarim have been largely exiled from Waterdeep, and thus the contacts are few and far between within the city. An those within don’t seem too enthused to give up their covert status.

Whether it be for the offered money, the chance to assist those in need, or other secret reasons, you step forward, with 5 others, out of the crowd and volunteer.

Alternate Reasons You Stepped Forward: If you select one of these, or have your own contact/reason for going, please indicate this in a DM Spoiler box. Honor system that the others won’t peek.
Wealthy nobles who use the area for hunting/sport want the area secured. Bonuses offered if you “take care of” the pesky elves squatting in the ruins within nearby forest.
Xanathar (The Beholder running the Waterdeep Thieves Guild) reached out through intermediates for information regarding Nightstone. Additional the Beholder seeks intel on rare artifacts and magical items.
My Noble families live in the city, for various reason they may have reached out for you to seek out Nightstone.
All of the factions in the North are curious about the situation at Nightstone, you are sent to gather intel and report out to other faction operatives.
You have a personal connection to the town?
Feel free to create a random contract/reason, it may get worked into the story eventually!

After a quick debriefing the herald of the Lord’s Alliance provides you each with a signed document which states that at the completion of your services the town of Nightstone is to provide your payment. You’re told to seek out Lady Velrosa Nandar, of Nandar Keep. She oversees the town and will know where the party is needed.

A mix bag of adventurers, you all now find yourselves marching towards Nightstone. News of the attack has the roads empty, as people fear the unknown assailants. Your first day was largely quiet, similarly so the first night’s camp led to little discussion. Now the second day, sun high above the sparsely littered clouds, the party continues its march.

Elcan was first to take the job. He hadn't taken a job for a few months, and the last he had done wasn't very well paying. He also hadn't shaved in the same amount of time.
Anyway, he was sick of being stared at every day. Looking into the eyes of passing strangers, it was like he could see what they were thinking. Elcan needed the open road. Maybe the time foretold by the old hermit would finally come.
When he saw who he would be working with, he knew he had nothing to worry about. He found company in a young chipmunk which, by his innate Firbolg abilities, could understand fully what he said. After the chipmunk ran away into the woods, Elcan cried himself to sleep knowing that whoever was listening carefully probably thought he was insane. After all, he isn't the smartest of Firbolgs.

The young woman who introduced herself as Lady Ravabella Amcathra has been staring curiously at Erykah for a good while now. Certainly long enough for Erykah herself to take notice if not everyone else as well.
Besides her floats what appears to be a strange looking impish creature made entirely out of steam.

Ravabella is on this mission because it was suggested to her by her family. She'll happily take the money though.

Valor (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1271991) felt a bit of solidarity with the odd firbolg in the group. He could sense the druid's tension unwinding as they left behind the crowded streets of Waterdeep and entered the cool forest.

Far from a homecoming, for Valor this was a setting out, and a leaving behind. Trees don't stare at your horns, or ask each other "What has one tail, two horns, and three hands? The Demon Cleric." Knowing full well you can hear every word. Well, it was time to show them what he could accomplish.

He looked around at the odd group, "Well, at least there are a lot of us. Anyone know anything about this Nightstone? Or the Lady Nandar?"

You can recall that Lady Nandar became the leader of the town after the passing of her father, and town founder, Lord Drezlin Nandar a year ago. Since then Lady Nandar has become well known for her ability to negotiate with the Elven clan settled in the Ardeep Forest.

You can recall that the town has always had the Nandar Keep, as you've heard the name before. But the inhabitants and there deeds are beyond your knowledge.

Will be taking the "Wealthy nobles who use the area for hunting/sport want the area secured. Bonuses offered if you “take care of” the pesky elves squatting in the ruins within nearby forest" option, given Shizuka's own feelings on her kin.
The half elven woman is quick to jump at the opportunity for work. Fifty gold could buy... well, whatever vice she felt like for the day. Or saved for something fun. Either way, a chance to move and show her skills was always welcome.

Nightstone received its name from a massive chunk of obsidian which stands in the middle of the city square. Ancient runes covers the stone, and scholars know the stone was infused with some form of strong magical essence, but to their knowledge the magic is not usable any longer. The city is surrounded by a motte and palisades, requiring the use of the city's drawbridge to enter. The city and the neighboring elves in the past frequently quarreled, but there has beena lasting peace between Nightstone and the Ardeep Elves for some time now.

"Just that Nightstone was named for a chunk of obsidian in the center of town. Supposedly it has magical properties, but nobody has any way to use them. It's well defended. Walls, drawbridges, moats, the works. Miss Nandar runs the place and is apparently why they get along with the knife ears so well now," Shizuka says to the question.

Ravabella blinks a few times as if what Shizuka said is very confusing and then replies, "...No? I don't see why I should have to. I am not whoever you have dealt with in the past and have done nothing to you. If that alone is not enough reason for you to avoid insulting me, consider that my own family is among those who organized this task we are on."
Her tone is of confusion and something like she thinks she's having to explain to someone that they shouldn't put their hands in fire because it's hot. There is also just the slightest hint of a sense of superiority as nobility as well. Though likely not the worst by far most in the group have had to deal with.

"Which half is financing it?"

Gluteus_Maximus

"Hmph. I saw you to be the more level of the two heads in this conflict over a simple title. The world did not grant us our titles, we gave ourselves titles. That is why I call each of you two 'young miss'. It is, quite simply and sadly, what you are." Elcan says, slightly annoyed.

Ravabella looks at Shizuka and Elcan and just shrugs. Being called "young miss" was hardly out of the ordinary or unpleasant for her. It seemed like a pretty odd thing for someone making a point of being insulting to half her (and their own) heritage to be upset about.
Then again, he was now acting like he was somehow their better. Shizuka's perhaps he might be. But certainly not hers.

"I am not a 'mutt'. You might view yourself, rightly or not, as of inferior breeding but I most certainly am not. I already made it clear I don't appreciate your nasty little word and I think I've spent more than enough time with this." Ravabella says and walks away, putting others of the group between Shizuka and herself.

As she does so she turns to look at Elcan and says, "My title is Lady." Making something of a point that she actually has a Title. Making sure he too is not close enough for comfortable conversation.

As she passes by Qisira she brushes past very closely... which perhaps accidentally causes the very hot steam creature that Garnet currently is in the forum of to rub up against the dragonborn.

Gluteus_Maximus
2017-07-18, 03:26 AM
Turning to Qisira, "Qisira, while you are also a young miss, you are wise for your young age. It saddens me that dragonborn such as yourself are not long for this world, but that is the natural way." He says, clearly respecting Qisira's position.

Then, he turns to Ravabella, and points to a rock on the side of the road. "Lady, if I was to up and declare myself Lord of that rock, how would you react?" He asks, trying to teach her a lesson.

Ravabella just ignores the foolish man who is speaking foolishness. She doesn't even consider the words long enough to roll her eyes at them. They're simply not worth her time.
She feels much the same about the dragonborn's words too. Though she does reflect that she at least wasn't making any real attempt at being serious, so she's certainly in the running for least irritating traveling companion so far.

"You are not unlike those many people in Waterdeep who stared at me for those months I was there. What I'm saying if you do not care about what I am saying, and that your parents, or whoever declared themselves lord and lady of the area of grass, dirt, and rock, everyone else has the right to not care about your titles. Your arrogance will be your undoing, and I am sure of that." He declares, then turns away, clearly done with the conversation.

An imbecile, and a priss. At least the dragonborn was amusing, possibly. She now knew what set off one of the group members. The large one seemed too stoic to anger, sadly, though there was the clear attempt to earn his years. Useful. Hm... knowing that amongst them was elven royalty... There were uses for that. Fun, interesting, and possibly hilarious uses.

"Look go easy on the Lady alright? I know the whole nobility thing is a load of whack but they got just as many issues as the rest o' us common folk, even if they don't show it. And hey she's here and that's gotta mean something right? Right? Look whatever, I'm just here to get paid. Good hustle Eclan" she says before slapping the Firbolg on the back.

I see, I have tried to camouflage them with the tattooers art, but you have seen the truth of it. The blood of a green dragon flows through my family. The actual source of the corruption is lost to our knowledge but those of us who manifest physical characteristics also inherit certain gifts, like our natural magical proclivities.

Given the evil nature of green dragons I tend not to advertise the relation lest I become the target of bigoted bias, much as you saw with our compatriot over there. I would appreciate it if you kept this to yourself.

After following the trail for miles, you hear the ringing of a bell. The sound grows louder as Nightstone comes into view. A river flows around the settlement, forming a moat. The village itself is contained within a wooden palisade, beyond which you see a windmill, a tall steeple, and the high-pitched rooftops of several other buildings. Apart from the ringing bell, you detect no other activity in the village. The trail ends before a lowered draw bridge which spans the moat. Beyond the drawbridge, two stone watchtowers flank an open gap in the palisade.

South of the village and surrounded by the river moat is a cone-shaped, flat-topped hill on which stands a stone keep enclosed by a wooden wall. The keep, which overlooks the village, has partially collapsed. A wooden bridge which once connected the keep to the village has also partially collapsed.

Garnet is able to see the town is largely emptied. Beyond the entrance to the left appears to be a temple that the bell ringing is originating from. Directly ahead of the entrance is a large square with two large creatures appearing to be preoccupied with a current meal. Garnet was too far away to make it out, but the deceased didn't appear to be human. Garnet is able to identify the large-mawed creatures as worgs. Throughout the town Garnet saw large boulders have been strewn about. Residences and town streets damaged under the boulders weight. Garnet was able to hear rustling about throughout the town, but couldn't see anyone around. To Garnet's knowledge no one knows he or the party are there. He wasn't able to get a good look at the Keep, but didn't see movement in that direction.

I suggests the group that draws away the worg is the most sneaky of us, and the one that fights the other is the more shiny of us. That way if anyone spots us fighting the worg they'll think its just a few of us and not all of us. If both worgs follows the distraction and we can't split them then lets at least fight them away from the main square, I don't like the idea of someone getting the drop on us whilst we're knee deep in worg guts"

Do keep in mind that they're both currently distracted by a meal, so it probably shouldn't be terribly hard to sneak up to them at least a certain distance away. If it proves too difficult to get them to separate, we might want them focused on Garnet. In this form she can cast a spell that makes landing blows on her more difficult."

Ravabella peaks around the back of the temple, with its incessant ringing. Behind the temple the graveyard stands empty. Narrow foot paths meander among the graves, most of which are marked with granite headstones. You can see two giant boulders had rolled through, as behind the boulders lay the wreckage of many headstones. In the north east corner stands a lone, above ground crypt, with the name Nander engraved to the front placard.

From this vantage point, you see the back of the neighboring building, looking to be the city's Inn, has been demolished by an boulder. No movement or noise is heard from this direction.

Erykah dashes from the bridge towards a boulder near the temple. Reaching the boulder the sorcerer drops prone to avoid the next volley of arrows. To the sorcerer's left, Erykah can see the wooden fencing along the graveyard perimeter behind the temple.

Erykah, a reminder for next round that getting up from the prone position takes up half your speed. Currently you have full cover, and are 60 ft., 70 ft., and 90 ft. away from the three goblins respectively. The next closest boulder is 30 ft. to the southeast, where Qisira is currently is standing. 20 ft. to the north east is the western edge of the city Inn. Garnet floats in the open roughly 40 ft. to your east, almost to the northern two goblins. I will update you on any of the movement after the goblins' turn.

Cold Damage: Spell reduces movement speed by 15 ft. (if spell causing movement reduction than the greater value is used.)

In a poof of steam the mephit explodes as the potbellied goblin's scimitar slices through the elemental. As the steam clears the gobln yells in victory: echos are heard from outside the windmill.

From her component pouch Erykah grabs a small pinch of sand and rose petals, cupping them in her hand and reciting a spell like a rhythmic lullaby. Opening her hand the sand and petals float away; the bowler-hat goblin, the tattooed goblin, and Qisira slowly slump into the plowed soil of the farm and drift to sleep. Qisira lays in the blood soaked soil, as she turns in her sleep it is revealed that one side of Qisira has reddened dirt stuck to her scales from the moisture.

Just to the north, Elcan swings his quarterstaff vertically while Shizuka thrusts forward with the point of her rapier. The bulbous end of the staff falls just to the right of the dress-wearing goblin as the goblin quickly dodges; however, the goblin moves straight into Shizuka's rapier. The blade piercing the leather armor lands through the heart, instantly dropping the florally fashioned goblin.

The pumpkin-haired goblin, still content with its spot behind the boulder, unleashes an arrow towards Shizuka as he sees the half-elf bounding towards her sleeping friends.

Skillfully the arrow avoids the sleeping lot and strikes Shizuka square in the upper thigh. The goblin laughs a little, as the two share in the misery of similar wounds.

Near the windmill the filed-toothed goblin sees Erykah go prone, and see his opening. Rushing forward the goblin does a small jump off the boulder and performs a downward thrust towards Erykah's back.

Startled by the thud of the fired arrow, Ravabella lets a bolt fly from her heavy crossbow. The sturdy shaft of the bolt embeds itself into the exposed portion of the goblin's skull, and the goblin falls from the upper loft into the opening below.

Checking the goblin's body reveals a small wooden box with the Golden Lions of the Lionshield Coster, the same as displayed out front of the trading post, emblem burned into the top hatch. Checking inside the box contains ten silvered darts.

Ravabella finds the box on the body, and during the investigation after doesn't find anything of note.

Valor bursts into the barn, warhammer in hand. He looks around, breathing heavily. "Ah, I see you've got it sorted out. Great. Uh, if you don't mind m'Lady, it's probably best for us to begin regathering the group."

Valor will stay near Ravabella until the group is done exploring and we move on to something else.

Walking over to a convenient boulder Qisira pulls a hipflask out and takes a small nip of Whiskey before settling down for a short rest.

"Have fun guys. I'll keep watch here. Don't stray too far now"
