Am I crazy? I could have sworn Wizards got sling proficiency... did I make that up or am I confusing that with an earlier edition?

wizards in 3.x have never been proficient with slings. I'm not sure how weapon proficiencies worked in older editions, but due to how granular weapon proficiencies were between the classes, I wouldn't be surprised if wizard lacked it there as well.

I'm wracking my brain and I'm really thinking I'm just crazy. Maybe back in pools of radiance for the NES/DOS wizards could use slings in that game but... I think I just remembered wrong... That's unfortunate.

It definitely was a thing in earlier editions, I played tons of 2e wizards. They could use daggers, staves, slings, and darts. Those old SSI Forgotten Realms/Krynn games had wizards using slings too.

Baldor's Gate and other Infinity Engine games (IWD, BG2, etc) got slings as well.

EDIT: Because they were based on the 2e rule set.
