As the thread title says, I'm wondering what you'd do with 1000 at level 1, 1 item, any WotC class.

You know you're heading into the world where the typical D&D tropes are found, marauding bands of orcs, sneaky goblins and kobalds, and dungeons with treasures.

I would save it for something better and more expensive.

HAs to be one item, and not (umm, 1000 / 25 = 40) 40 1st level scrolls? Okay.

Wand of Cure Light Wounds--or Lesser Vigor if non-core is allowed--is 750 gp.

Disagree with Mike Miller--spend the money now. OTherwise you probably won't live to spend it later.

Well, he did ask what others would do. 😛

The errata'd healing belt is 1,000 gp. I'd go with that or something that fits the character (such as a reliquary holy symbol for a character who likes turn undead, acrobat boots for an acrobat maybe).

Then have the rogue steal the money....

Citation?

I've checked the Errata I can find, and its not in there:

Buy a scroll of wall of salt, have the party cleric or wizard do a caster level check (DC 12 I think) to activate it. Sell the salt. Rinse, repeat.

Oop. I did some checking around and people have just been saying that it was errata'd for a while. Might have been changed, or they're citing the creation cost of the belt, which is 500 gp (so it should technically cost 1,000 gp).

Either way, it's still a decent item if you can't find anything you like on a specific character for 1,000 gp or less.

I choose the Emperor Tippy wand(s) of You're Screwed.

CL 1 Wand of Arcane Thesis, Invisible (-1), Sanctum (-2), Easy Meta: Fell Drain, Fell Drain (+0), Easy Meta: Twin Spell, Twinned (+2), Easy Meta: Repeat Spell, Repeated (+1), Forceful (+0), Magic Missile.

CL 1 Wand of Arcane Thesis, Invisible (-1), Sanctum (-2), Cooperative Spell (-1), Easy Meta: Fell Drain, Fell Drain (+0), Easy Meta: Twin Spell, Twinned (+2), Easy Meta: Quicken Spell, Quickened (+2), Forceful (+0), Magic Missile.

Using your Swift and Standard actions in conjunction with the Magic Device Attunement feat on one of the wands (quicken probably) and blast away

The Quicken wand deals two negative levels (no save, no attack roll, 110 ft. range) and adds a save or be knocked prone and stunned effect. The Repeat Wand does the same thing except it does it again for free on the next round.

If you don't have shield, immunity to negative levels, or a Brooch of Shielding then you are pretty much thoroughly screwed. Each wand is only 750 GP.

Citation needed on arcane thesis being appliccable to magic items. Also, sanctum's spell level adjustment is calculated on spell cast, so it wouldn't modify the spell like that.

That is something to take up with emperor Tippy. It was a PM from a long time ago.

It depends on the class.

And the party.

And the game, to the extent that you know it.

If I was playing a front liner in a traditional dungeoncrawl, I'd probably invest in some decent armor. If I was playing a wizard in a social/intrigue campaign, I probably wouldn't.

Assuming you already have the basic adventuring gear, I would save for a handy haversack

A gem worth 1,000 gp. You can then sell it for the full value of 1,000 gp and use that to buy multiple useful items.
