Hey gang!

I am playing in an adventure and I am looking for an evil horse type mount. Long ago I was in a game where I was able to get a mount that was similar to a nightmare... but NOT a nightmare. For the life of me I can't remember what is was called or what book it was in. I know it was an evil horse and dark. I remember something about there being smoke when it moved, but that is about it. It was like 22 years ago lol.

Can you guys help me out? It's like a steering wheel on my belt buckle... It's driving me nuts!

Lesser Nightmare or Black Unicorn come to mind. From Planar Handbook and Monsters of Faerun respectively.

Apocalypse Demon Unicorn (Wizards Online article using the d20 Apocalypse template)

Monstrous Vampire Unicorn (Wizards Online article using the monstrous vampire template from Ghostwalk)

Both can be found here.

Fiendish warhorse, light (I think this might have been in one of the Forgotten Realms supplements)

Ur'Epona - Horse-like creatures that can move from plane to plane. The color of their coat changes with their mood. (Planar Handbook)

If it was actually 22 years ago, that would have been smack dab in the middle of 2nd edition. Here are all the monsters from 2nd ed (http://www.lomion.de/cmm/_contents.php).

Maybe a Nic'Epona (http://www.lomion.de/cmm/nicepona.php)?

Haven't found a creature as described yet, but since quick google-fu quickly turned up the description of the Phantom Steed spell. It's described as black with gray mane and tail, with insubstantial smoky hooves that make no sound when it moves.

Another mythological horse-with-evil-intentions is the kelpie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelpie). Probably not what you're looking for, as they generally stay pretty close to lakes. But hey, ya never know.

I think an Ecalypse from Manual of the Planes also might fit.

A Bloodlance from Dragon 357: It is what's left of a unicorn after one goes for a Defiled Horn (from BoVD)
