So a while ago I remember reading about a class that could spend 100gp in any major town to have a "schrodinger's box" of equipment, basically at any time they could pull something worth less than 100gp out of their quantum state of gear and decide on the spot what the gear was. I'm not sure if it was pathfinder or 3.5, but does anyone know which class I'm talking about?

I don't know what it is, but it just might be my new favorite class...

It's called DM Fiat

Found it! It's the pathfinder chronicler (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/core-rulebook/pathfinder-chronicler/) prestige class from the pathfinder core rulebook.

Menacing Brute from Races of Destiny? They have an ability called Resourceful Search that lets them make a search check to scavenge a bit of non magical equipment 1/day with a value up to 200 gp depending on time spent and size of the community.

Brilliant Planner (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/brilliant-planner/) is a feat that does a similar thing to the Pathfinder Chronicler's Deep Pockets, but while the PrC ability is 100gp /class level, the feat is 50gp /character level.

Edit: there are also some differences between carried weight, items allowed, and uses per day.

Nice find, like a budget version of deep pockets.

Shade Hunter gets this at level 4.

Tools of the Trade: By 4th level, you have picked up so many knickknacks and strange tools on your travels that you've lost track of everything you own. Once per day, you can "find" any mundane piece of equipment (other than weapons or armor) worth up to 10 gp per class level somewhere on your person, having forgotten completely about it. When you do so, you must subtract an equivalent amount of gold (or other treasure – gems, jewelry, art, etc.) from your savings. If you do not have enough gold to cover the cost of the item you want, you might not find the item with this ability.
