So if poison is only one hit wonder would having a familiar/companion on tap, on top of quick hands be the most viable way to use poisons? Otherwise I a one shot poison seems meh

At lower levels or versus humans and elves and non dwarves.... its not terrible.

And it's mundane, not magical. How many players have a prepared detect poison spell? 10 minutes to cast a ritual, is a long time for an assassin to work. AFB if the spell is even a ritual.

The issue is, I think, the designers perhaps did not want something so lethal, that at low levels could possibly kill PCs outright. And unfortunately poison is toned down in 5E.

Having an easy means of getting your poison is also important.

One method is having a companion/familiar that supplies it. The flying snake has a DC less 3d4 poison for example.

Detect poison can be ritually cast.
