If Redcloak wanted to sink the ship, why not cast that disintegrate on it? A 10-ft cube of the ship at sea level being turned to dust isn't going to help the ship's buoyancy-and it is an automatic hit with no save so why lose so many goblins/hobgoblins plus a 7th level spell to summon the octopus?

There's already a thread on that (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52869) half way down the page. :smalltongue:

Short answer: putting a 10-foot hole in a perfectly mundane ship is not an efficient use of that spell slot.

And it wouldn't sink the ship. But a Summoned Fiendish Octopus should have been able to crack it like an egg.

Redcloak just wasn't planning on a bunch of High Level Characters hiding out on the boat.

Besides, what's more fun? Blasting a ship with a single spell, or playing with it for several rounds before you sink it to the bottom of the sea. Any cat owner knows the answer to that question. :smallwink:
