Did Volos guide add any companions?

-or is the revised ranger the new arc of animals

only beasts of note that I remember are dinosaurs (the cows being too big). Velociraptor should be legal under both rulesets but is tiny and easy to kill. it's basically a tiny wolf you can carry in your pocket.

Dolphin
Deep Rothe
Dimetrodon

Thats about it from what I can see, the rest are large or above CR 1/4

How about any companions for the revised? It opened the door right?

The Revised Ranger is actually more restrictive since it gives you a set list to choose from (ape, black bear, boar, giant badger, giant weasel, mule, panther, wolf), though it does say your DM can add others.

Right, it specifically says that you normally choose from the list. It also says your DM might choose for you. The Beast Conclave is firmly in the DM's court.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... The Velociraptor is considered "tiny" in Volo's!? That's ridiculous. The tiny raptor would be a Compsognathus, the "Compys" from Jurassic Park which average about 12" tall. Velociraptors were 3'- 6' tall and 6'- 9' long depending on specific type and would be considered small or medium by D&D standards. The movie "Raptors" were of a different type and were even larger than that clicking in between 6'- 9' tall and 10'- 14' long.

Branching off that, though, a Compy Companion would be adorable.

Actual velociraptors were about the size of a turkey. The ones in the movie were much closer to a Deinonychus. Michael Crichton referred to them as velociraptors against his paleontology consultant's advice because it sounded cooler.
