View Full Version : Class Popularity (NOT power!)

Plenty of arguments abound about class power, but what do you actually find fun to play? e.g. what is your favorite Core class, favorite other base class, fave prestige class, etc? What do you dream of playing but never got to? Also, what do you think are the most popular classes? I've been surprised by how often I see recruitment threads on here with three and four melee builds being offered.

I don't really have particular favorite classes because I've only played a few so far, but I have a few specific dream characters:

Dragonfire Adept - only got to play this to level 3ish before a party wipe, and half that time we were fighting fiendish monsters so my fire breath did NOTHING. I really want a chance to play this at higher levels.
Kensai (complete warrior) specializing in two-ended sword - I know TWF is non-optimal, but something about this idea just calls to me as highly Awesome
Shadowcaster - Love the flavor of this class, love the interesting spell options, hate hate hate the way WoTC made Tome of Magic so underpowered (except a few binder exploits of course). Worst part of shadowcaster is that at levels 1 through 6 you literally have a number of spells per day equal to your level, excluding 0th level.

Favourite classes are Duskblade, Hexblade, Warblade and Psychic Warrior. Favourite prestige classes are things like Abjurant Champion and Suel Arcanamach.
Favourite core class would probably be Ranger or Bard.

I like the Shadowcaster too, but full casters aren't really my thing. Arrow of Dusk actually does quite a bit to keep them up to scratch for the first few levels, as long as you don't find too many undead or constructs.

I'm boring. My favourite class is, and always has been through every edition of D&D, the Cleric. Usually Dwarven.

While this will probably label me as a social outcast forever more, I have to say I rather enjoy playing paladins: from lawful anal to chaotic righteous and the somewhat more subtle variations in between, I've had a lot of fun with good-aligned paladins.

I'd say bard if i could count my Iron Kingdoms Trollkin varient bard. He fronted the worlds first metal band. Metal + Steampunk + Bards that yells = WIN!!

but in most games i'd say either Wizard (i have a thing for Neromancers) or Dark Companion Hexblades.

It's really too bad what has happened to paladin. Paladin, in my opinion, is very much like what is stated explicitly about Kensai in CW, a powerful class intended to challenge the player with interesting roleplaying requirements. Unfortunately, Paladin doesn't actually stand out all that much in power in the final analysis (especially post-ToB), and there aren't really enough mature roleplayers out there to give paladin the good name it deserves.

My favourite character to play thus far was a Lawful Evil Enchanter, though I quite like Bards and Rogues in core, Scouts and Swordsages outside of core, and as far as prestige classes go, all bets are off.

I like druids. Yes, I realize this isn't power, but the concept is just so great, with animal companions (one time I swindeled a phoenix into being my animal companion), the restrictions on weapons and armor (causing me to always be an elf), I love it all.

I also like the Hierophant, and the Favored Soul.

I love playing Druids and Barbarians both alot of fun. I have a Ranger that I built for Archery that dealt more damage than the party spell caster. We only got to 6th level though (Well I got to 7th because I showed up to every session and was the best roleplayer), but I had a build worked out that may have allowed me to keep up, OK it involved a homebrew PRC but still that gave me an extra set of arms and powerful build, it was making me slowly become an Arrow Demon. This was fun of course because I was playing a Lawful Good Knight (Title not class), who would flip out at times do to demonic influence.

Also I want to play a Gestalt Cleric(Positive energy)//Dread Necromancer. Just need a DM that will not call the creation of undead not automatically evil and running a Gestalt game.

A generalist wizard. I'm not talking about power here, mind you--I'd play the wizard class even if it were weaker than a one-armed monk. Even if the DM banned all save-or-suck and save-or-lose spells, I'd still love 'em. I just love the utility spells! Levitate, tenser's floating disk, knock, web, spider climb, mount, minor creation--no other class, other than perhaps a well-prepared skillmonkey, allows for the same degree of lateral thinking and unorthodox solutions to problems.

I like playing paladins; moral questions and issues interest me greatly. I just love being a beacon of Good in the world, inspiring others with powerful Good and honor. I also like being a counterexample to the Lawful Stupid smitebot paladin archetype.

Second up is a PrC, the windwright captain. Because being able to guide an elemental bound airship from 2 miles away is just that much fun.

Next is the wizard. I don't care about power; in fact, I don't really like using many save-or-lose spells. My wizards are blasters and buffers. I just love the utility and the spellcasting.

I love the bard, but rogues and swashbucklers are a close second (I know you are all surprised).

Lloyd Alexander and Alexandre Dumas ruined me...

I am very interested in trying the Factotum now. It seems to have the whole intelligent jack-of-all-trades I like.

Spellthief is arguably my favorite class to use for NPCs. They tend to always throw players off.

I'm in love with the Beguiler.

Same here, it's just awesome.

I tend to play casters for the versatility (usually of the arcane kind), although I occasionally play a good skillmonkey instead (that'd probably explain why I love beguilers, as they're both). I had an awesome paladin character once, too. I've never even considered playing a fighter.

Beguilers are awesome--highly useful in combat (without access to the most overwhelming spells, especially at higher levels) against almost everything (although, again, it fades at higher levels... but that's what Use Magic Device and Heighten Spell are for), and incredible outside of combat. Have you seen the Conceal Spellcasting and False Theurgy skill tricks in the Complete Scoundrel? So incredibly useful (Conceal especially).

But they are pretty damn girly.

Sorcerer. Elven sorcerer.
I like the fact that you can just go day by day with a sorcerer and not worry about too much besides where your next meal is comming from. You get more spells per day that wizards(but less actual respective spells) and you don't need to prepare them. You are flexable in the sense that you can cast any spell you know pretty much whenever. The simplicity allows you to concentrate on more important things, and the money that you don't spend on books and whatnot is better spent on stuff like magic stat enhancement items. Although you don't normally get too many skill points, your charisma score warrents you the position of party leader. There are plenty of prestige classes to pick from, and the requirements are usually easier to meet then you might think.

I like spells and skills, in that order. The Wizard, who knows a lot of spells and has the Intelligence to get a decent number of skills, is a classic pick...I sometimes splash a level or two of Rogue on spellcasters who don't have many skill points to keep a nice balance.

I like gishes - druids, clerics, wizards/eldritch knights (or another similar class), psions/slayers, psychic warriors. ToB classes are (probably) also cool, though I've only seen the stats of Warblade.

I like paladins as a concept, but not as much as a class (since they are rather underpowered, not counting crazy mounted charge builds) - a cleric or a crusader could also fit the fluff. Nevertheless, I salute people who play paladins the way they should - as bastions of valor and virtues, without a stick up their arses nor detect evil (in order to smite everything that reads as red, of course) constantly on. In today's world where everyone and their dog thinks that being a spineless anti-hero is hip, those who have morals are even cooler!
And I mean it.

Or failing that, some hard-hitting melee class like the Warblade or the Paladin. Because smashing stuff is FUN!.

Spellthieves are fun in general.

My DM hardly ever throws casters at us, and when he does they have the worst spell selection (when he plays, he is typically a barbarian, so I don't think he understands the nuances of magic and its uses as well as somone playing a spellthief would like). Because of that, it's not very fun.

Another vote for paladins. They're my favorite overall, and I usually try to end up more like Hinjo then Miko (if I want 'hit it first, ask questions later' I'll just go barbarian or something).

Favorite prestige class (and my second favorite playstyle) would be the Duelist. Never tried playing a homebrewed version of it, but I think I'd like dashing swordsman too.

In a Core only game, Fighter all the way.

Non core, Warblades rock my world. I also like Soulknives, Unarmed Swordsages, Psychic Warriors, and the occasional Hexblade.

Homebrew wise, Fax Celestis's Paladin is the single best rendition of the class I have ever seen.

I have a place in my heart for fighters, with the simplicity of playing style, and rouges, aka the skillmonkeys, and arcane users, aka uber-cannons, and clerics, aka band-aids. I like everything, but I think that stuff like monks, bards, and stuff that's usually presented as underpowered cause the best RPing experience. Hell, my first guy was a Gesalt Monk-Wizard, although the other guy kept finishing the fight. I was more support. I got crappy HP rolls.

Favorite class is probably the rouge or the crusader. I really don't think I've gotten to play enough to really have an opinion, though. I mean, I dislike paladins alot, but thats because the paladin's I've been with have all been Miko's, so I'm probably biased. Similarly, I've been pretty effective as a rouge or a crusader, so I'm a bit biased towards them.

On PrC's, I love the Kensia. Purely for the wacky stuff you can do with it. For instance, be a monk and enchant your head with the throwing enchantment. Now you can throw your head at people, and then go pick it up. If you want add the flaming and returning enchantments plus get a hat of disguse, and you have the headless horseman (this can also work with fists).

Psions.

Cause they will KILL YOU WITH THEIR MIND!!!!

Plus, Genesis, a link to my favorite monster (Mind Flayer), Psicrystals, one of the best pseudo-magic systems, and a myriad of powers, all juiced with flavor that makes them more special.

If I had to choose a single psion type, it would be shaper, you get offensive powers, as well as Item Creation powers, which are fun.

Truespeakers I love for the Flavor, and Binders for the Versatility, but I like Psions the best.

I've never actually played a Prestige Class, so I wouldn't be able to make a choice, but the Mystic Thurge has both Versatility, and unique flavor, which I like.

If I could use a Homebrewed PrC, it would be Red Mage from 8-bit Theater, which is the same as The Thurge, but with the power to have a Stat sheet, that he forms a bond with, that allows him to switch Abilities and Ranks, allowing for ULTIMATE VERSATILITY!!

I got to say my favorites are either the Warblade or the Warlock. I love the warblade because it's a great excuse for me to pull out some wacky crap and throughly get into a daredevil-esque battle style. I don't know, I just get a kick out of seeing the expression on my DM's face when I use some tapestries on the wall to swing myself over a huge gap and prevent the BBEG from making a clean escape. I like warlock because I don't have to worry about rationing my abilities. Everything can be altered as you need it for the optimal conditions. The part I hated about being a wizard was I always seemed to have a fireball when I needed a lightning bolt. Oh and having fiendish blood running through my veins is always a plus.

I prefer either wizard or warblade. I really like the way playing a wizard feels, it's complex, it requires forethought, and if you're smart about it, and a bit lucky, you come up with solutions to almost everything, being a toolbox and an excellent offensive weapon. At higher levels, it gets a bit silly, and you end up tying up resources in paranoia. A lot of resources.

Warblade is more simplistic, but still requires a bit of planning. Having a bunch of skills for various actions, as well as manuvers (fun!) makes for a very varied combat. Swordsage is good for that as well, actually.

Therefore, I must like JPM with Abjurant Champion.

My favourite class ever is the Crusader, probably due in no small part to Dawn of War, which gave me an interest in the Warhammer 40k universe. Force Commanders and Chaos Lords have always looked badass to me, not really because of the smashing, but more because of their faith and the strength it gives them. I'm not a very religious person, and I don't put much stock in superstition, but when a Force Commander goes charging into a pile of daemons, screaming prayers of endurance and litanies of spite, yelling to high heaven that the Immortal God-Emperor is there with him and he'll not give up a single bloodied inch of hallowed ground so long as there is breath in his lungs...well...I just can't help but feel an attraction.

Used to, I'd try this with a Paladin of Tyranny, but in mid-levels, they're so much overshadowed by other classes, they really lose a bit of the badass feel. So, when I got Tome of Battle, the Crusader was like a god-send. Telling someone that their god has forsaken them, and that I'm about to remove their favourite organs, and then being able to deal +8d8 damage to actually do so...well...its a lot cooler than hitting for +9 damage and only slightly scrapping their kneecaps, while the atheist wizard next to me reduces the 30 guys behind my target to ash without batting an eye.

Favourite core class is probably Sorcerer, especially with a played-up bloodline of some kind. Saying you get to explode peoples' heads because the powers of Celestia or Baator are in your blood is cool to me. Damn cool.

Favourite prestige class is most likely Apostle of Peace. Never played one, but the idea of a lone paragon of treehuggery and gotalongitude standing in the bleak wastes of stabitandlootit warriors who seem to populate much of game worlds intrigues me. Weapons shatter on his skin, raging monsters are soothed before him, and demons shriek and flee in terror...all because he refuses to harm anyone.

Anything with lots of <something>, generally. I like my versatility. I also prefer the feel of melee-style characters, I've never really been a big fan of ranged or spellcasting, though I do play them from time to time. I'd have to say my top three, in no particular order, would be Fighter (Mmm, feats), Rogue (skillgasm!), or Monk (Just altogether tasty).

In order, more or less, of preference....
I adore Rogues. Always have, always will. I like thieves, too, and Assassins, and pretty much anything else that sneaks around stabbing things and people.

On that note, from Iron Heroes, I love the Executioner. I love that system generally, but Executioner particularly.

I like Warblades; I feel they synergize well with a lot of things and have some neat abilities.

I like Factotums- generalists that work.

I like Artificers, because I love to make things. Especially magical things.

I'm also sweet on Swordsages, HiSB Paladins, Archers, Harriers, Swashbucklers, Psychic Rogues, Psychic Warriors, Wilders, Shadowcasters, and Binders.

Well the common thread of characters I tend to enjoy:
-Usually melee-focused
-Mobile
-Good staying power, so I can do some silly/foolhardy **** and not automatically die.
-A decent number of tactical options of choose from that don't require TOO much mental math.
-Not gimpy, don't need power, I just can't stand playing a character who's the weakest of the group.

From that, barbarian with a 2-level fighter dip and some of the Combat Ex line of feats is probably the simplest character that fits those for me. Would also like to have some fun with the ToB classes or branch out and play a full caster for the first time since 2nd Ed.

Of base classes, I like the druid a lot. I don't play it the broken way, mind you, so it's not about power, but actually about fluff and versatility.
I like rangers too, I guess I'd play any of the other melee classes before playing a fighter. I also like clerics, but that's my typical class.

I like a lot of the new base classes. I love the beguiler, though it's not for every type of game. I actually have fun with warlocks, and I never played one but I think I'd give the hexblade a try.

My favorite core class is probably the bard, just because I've always dreamed of showing my friends how to really play one.

That said, my favorite non-core class is the beguiler. It's just so... awesome.

The class I've always dreamed of playing is artificer, just because I've always wanted to build myself a small army of robot servants to do my bidding. A few homunculi, a shield guardian, an iron golem or three... And there's me, in the back, cackling maniacally at how cheaper it would have been to make a horde of undead.

That said, I'm a huge fan of the duskblade, swordsage, psion, ardent, and I've always wanted to give Fleshwarper a shot.

Many of the classes I like probably turn out to be at least somewhat weak, which actually is a very real concern to me (given the choice, I would much rather be effective at something). I actually like surprisingly few casting classes, despite the "if it's not a full caster, fuggedabadit" nature of the game..a lot of it is just way too much bookkeeping for my taste and seems to become fun only after the mook levels (which I've only gotten to play on a few occasions). Stuff I actually like:

Ranger, despite the fact that yes, a fighter could probably do it better and it's best known for using one of two sub-optimal combat styles. I would have to go with the distracting attack variant, since I'm not very keen on constantly replacing pets that die if enemies so much as look at them too hard. Casting or non-casting variant, I'm not as sure of. I don't know the replacements for the non-casting variant that well, but it's not like rangers get spells by the boatload in the first place.

Monk, despite not being good at, well, anything. Super-maneuverability and being tough to kill (provided you're allowed to build/equip him decently, oh, and stay out of melee) are very nice--if only the class were useful for something. Yes, I've repeatedly read suggestions about using Swordsage instead, but I really don't feel like learning what amounts to magic for melee combat just to have a competent monk. I'd much rather the actual monk class get fixed, but I know it's not likely.

Duskblade, probably the only casting class I actively like (I don't count rangers as casters :smalltongue: ), even if their magic is mostly just a way to augment fighting. They've got some nice nova ability for when you run into tougher opponents and their spell list allows you to pull off a few neat tricks per day. And you don't have to try figuring out what spells you think you might want at the beginning of the day. They don't seem to prestige well, but I don't normally look into stuff like that too often, so I guess that's forgivable.

Barbarian, great Hulk-smash class. One of my favorite characters of all time was a large bastard sword-wielding barbarian/fighter a friend of mine dreamed up. I know Monkey Grip is a bad feat and all, but damn could he kill things. The group began refering to his character as "the lawnmower."

I like the idea of the Soulknife, even if the execution leaves much to be desired (not a fan of psionics in general though). Incarnum seems like a neat idea in general, but I have no idea how well it actually works out.

Let's see.

Wizards and sorcerers are what immediately pops into mind. Wizards, because they're the fantasy equavalent of a computer geek, so pretty easy to relate to :smalltongue: Sorcerers because the whole 'arcane power bubbling out your ears because of your draconic heritage' thing coupled with the ease of play (compared to wizards, who have all the fuss of memorizing and stuff) make them pure awesome.

Warblades, Duskblades and Psychic Warriors, because they make playing a melee class more interesting then "I full attack with power attack X."

Dragon Shamans, because I like the draconic connection. I imagine I would like Dragonfire Adepts too, but I don't have Dragon Magic (yet).

For prestige classes... hmm. Wild Mage is very interesting, the randomness is quite fun. The 10th level ability rocks against enemy casters, too. Mage of the Arcane Order, to enhance the scholarly feel of mages. Alienist, because he's creepy.

Depends on which group I'm playing with....

I probably like the Paladin best, but play more of a 'killing is the last resort' style for the most part. However, that doesn't jive with one of my groups, where hack'n'slash is the only thing they like. In that case, I'll usually play a Sorceror (I like the sorceror fluff more wizard). I just bought the ToB, so this may change soon.

But my favourite core class has, and always will be, the Fighter. My first and best, I couldn't care less whether it isn't powerful. Hell, I've got a massive sword, biatch. I'm gonna damn well use it.

And as for Paladins- I enjoy them a lot, and I don't count myself as mature and yet I'm gunning for interesting role playing opportunities. Currently, my Elven Paladin has seen in a dream that her God contacted her and told her to follow and obey a PC, making him second in power only to her God. After riding for days on end, she finds him, only to find out that the PC is an atheist and is a Rogue.

Paladin: "I...obey your will, Master."
Rogue: "STOP CALLING ME MASTER AND HAVE A MIND OF YOUR OWN!"
Paladin: "Yes Mas- I mean, Ryan." :smalltongue: That's generally how it goes, with the Paladin frequently putting her life on the line to defend the Rogue, who just wants to be left alone.

Hmmm...
Well, I've always had a love of psions. There's just something about a well placed Mind Thrust and the capability to wear armor without problems that you just can't beat.
That said, I've also come to like clerics, dread necromancers, and archivists. I don't know, the archivist just seems really cool with their ability to learn any divine spell.

I love rangers most, probably because I was introduced to D&D just after ascending a fun and powerful ranger in nethack. I prefer archery focused, but they're also fun with double weapons.
I also like monks a lot, because they're so fast.
I like the idea of the soulknife, though I've never had a chance to play one.

Favourite classes are:

The Barbarian: Mindless killing is fun. Especially when they can't fight back

Duskblade: The first and only time I played one was yesterday (unfortunately we destroyed the Greyhawk and decided to play a new campaign). It was really fun blowing the crap out of orcs with Kelgore's Firebolt or owning them with my Fullblade.

Wizard: Playing a Wizard is like playing a trading card game. It involves selecting and combining certain spells.

Favourite Prestige classes:

Fortune's Friend: Me so lucky.

Shdowdancer: Best prestige from the DMG.

Windwright Captain: Only good for the first 2 levels BUT you get uncanny dodge and more importantly your own Airship. How bitching is that?

Favorite Base Class: I'm torn between Fighter and Wizard.

Why the Fighter? I like swords, and the ability to customize.

Why the Wizard? I like using annoying tactics. I also like shaping the world to my will. What about Sorcerers, then? Sorry, I enjoy not being so limited.

I also like the Factotum. I guess that's my non-core pick.

Favorite Prestige Class: Well, it's probably no surprise that one such as myself would enjoy gish PrCs. I like swording, I like wizarding, so when I can combine the two, I'm usually satisfied on both ends. This makes the Abjurant Champion my favorite.

I also very much like the Cavalier, and the Blackguard. Running things through with a lance is cool, as is becoming an evil knight.

long live the scout, one of the few skillmonkeys that can encounter a creature witout discernible anatomy and survive.
but this isn't about power.
the scout is brilliant because unlike most classes there isn't a cliché scout. the equiptment they wear and use is relatively cliché because the items work well mechanically, but the character/background etc. is so varied that you'd practically have to have directly copied someone else's character to end up with two the same.
the scout even makes more sense than a rogue "I was raised on the streets, so I know how to disarm elaborate traps and use magic devices. I also know highly advanced anatomy despite being the son of an illiterate whore, and have never been educated" whereas the scout "I've spent alot of time in the wild, you learn not to get hit, and when you hunt for survival you quickly learn the fastest way to take down your prey". the logic behind the scout even extends to them not having disable device but having trapfinding, if you have such a large amout of space to work with, you don't need to disarm traps, just avoid them.
the scout just makes sense, despite the jokes about camping with young boys.

Psions, Druids and Rogues have always been my favorites, though I rarely play the last, and don't get much opportunity to play the first.

Prestige Classes would include the Elocator because it is the coolest mobility PrC that exists. Keepers of the Cerulean Sign from Lords of Madness I also love the flavor of. Stormsinger from Frostburn is also great fun.

Favorite PrC of all time though is non-wizards and would be the Awakened Dreamer from Hyperconscious. I love psionics and I love dream-based stuff.

I have two recurring themes. First, the nature characters. Ranger, Scout, Druid, you name it, I played it.

And the other one? Psionics. Almost any kind of psionic character is going to get played by me if given half the chance. Wilder, Ardent, Psywarrior, Lurk, Marksman, and (especially) Psion - if it's got manifesters levels, I'll play it. Mobility based psywarriors going into Elocator are things of love.

Lately I've also fallen in love with the idea of the swordsage. It's just awesome. I want to make one in a campaign, but I am doomed to always DM these days.

Me, I'm a power nut. Not in the sense of optimising, but in the sense of having control.
I like to rain suns upon my foes as a spellcaster, or obliterate them with weapons as a warrior. No matter which I am though, I always command those around me, I always am the centre of the power.
For this, I usually like to pick up a Wizard, or go with a Fighter.
I love Mystic Theurges though. Mixing the arcane and the divine together to create an unholy demigod of magic. While I will never be as powerful as a full wizard or cleric, the sheer number of undead I can control means I don't have to be. So, :smalltongue: I say to ye.

Me, I've always been partial to rogues. I just like having a ton of skills and being all sneaky. I also like the scout, warlock, and the duelist prestige class (I've seen mentions of a duelist base class, but haven't seen the book yet). Complete adventurer is an awesome book too.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Swashbuckler, from Complete Warrior. Lightly armored, finesse weapons, INT to damage. Neat class, but I think it needs more to it.

My favorite core class is obviously the Barbarian. They are at the same time great damage dealer, really fast and the toughest class, you cant ask for more. My favorite character ever was a barbarian and it was just too cool how, even after the 4 others party members died, he defeated that annoying level 18 sorcerer just with a grab...My DM soon discovered that, with my 25 in str (with items and rage) and his sorcerer 7 in str, his uber-sorcerer just cant get away from me. I went up a level (to level 15) while everyone else were just level 13 after I resurected them, it was so funny.

In the prestige class, I love the Malconvoker. I love summoners in the first place and I just like the idea of bluffing evil creatures in attacking others evil creatures (evil destroy evil you know). Of course, its also a bit risky because the fiends you summon could always attack you instead (it actually happened twice) but otherwise its just cool for roleplay to talk to demons and devils and try to find a believable story as why they should attack those others demons or devils  .

I tend to play clerics (non-codzila) and paladins. Clerics because I usually roll poorly in combats (once I played a fighter, and rolled a 1 in the session's first attack roll), and paladins because I like to play the knightly hero type.
For races, I like humans and dwarves (and I often play paladin dwarves  )
No preference for PrCs. Depends on my mood for what I want to do.

Edit: Just fixed a typo.

Monk. Their useless in every situation (unless in all lawful campaign, but yea right),
I just love them. They always die, and if they don't something horrible happens to them, but their great anyway.

Of those few I've played, Swordsages are my personal favorites, because they're so versatile. But hexblades and binders and spellthieves sound interesting, and one of these days I will play a useful Apostle of Peace.

Just imagining an enemy's sword shattering on my bare skin, then looking at him like I'm disappointed, maybe shaking my finger at him... entertaining.

Psion, I love psionics. Warblade, Swordsage, Wizard/Sorcerer, Druid, Cleric and Favored Soul are also on the list. I realize I like most of the top-tier classes, but this is primarily because I love having lots of options in combat, which spellcasting and maneuvers grants me.

I want to try some of the gishes at some point too, such as the Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight/Abjurant Champion build I often see.

Rogue, without a doubt. I often multiclass rogue with another class, or gestalt, to achieve what I want for a specific character, but for whatever reason rogue pops up in at least half of my PCs and NPCs.

One thing that has me hooked is the skill points, I know that much. Another part of it is that rogue is a rather nice, completely non-spellcasting class (unless you UMD). I do not enjoy playing spellcasters, and favor finesse-fighting skill-monkey characters in general.

Scout, Swashbuckler, and various Rogue-friendly PrCs follow Rogue in popularity for me.

Things with a number of options they can use (not one-trick ponies, e.g. Leap Attack Shock Troopers), but low on the bookkeeping end of things.

Psychic Warriors and Warblades are good for melee. Truenamers and Warlocks seem like fun casters to play, though I can also deal with Sorcerers, or even Ardents or Wilders. Rogues and Scouts can be fun, though they (more than other classes) have to have a good personality to compliment their mechanical abilities before they will interest me. (I guess that means I should probably stick with them when I play ... so that I will do more role-playing, less roll-playing.)

Dragon Shamans seem very fun in spite of not being very powerful. Beguilers are the most powerful class that actually seems fun (although I don't mind Clerics if they are spontaneous variant casters, or Druids if they are spontaneous variant casters and Shapechange variant wildshapers).

Of course, my first love was Rangers, and they will always hold a special place in my heart too. Oh, and my second love, interesting Gish builds (not the Duskblade; Gishes shouldn't only be blasters).

I like to play mundane charecters with high dexterity. Rogues are my personal favorite. If I play as a caster, spellcasting is a tertiary concern at best.
Even with bards, my bards are music first, combat second, magic for healing spells.

Occasionally, I'll draw up a Blaster Sorceror, because book learnin' spells taste funny. Also, I'm not a fan of preparing them.

Inside of Core, I like rogues, rangers, and bards, in varying degrees. Usually I don't like playing as the Trapfinding Rogue, but there are exceptions. Also, I tend towards human, because you can really never have enough skill points and the bonus feat is always handy. As a Ranger I switch between TWF and ranged, almost invariably elf. Bards I haven't had much of a chance to play with, but they're pretty fun.

Outside of Core, I like swashbuckler/rogue combinations with Daring Outlaw from Complete Scoundrel. Sometimes I go for mostly rogue, with the swashbuckler levels to provide a little extra beef and the Insightful Strike feature, and sometimes mostly swashbuckler, with rogue levels to gain Evasion and Uncanny Dodge (and, of course, sneak attack.)

Prestige classes, I am admittedly less familiar with, largely because I lack books (but I am quickly expanding). Master Thrower is probably one of my favorites (I love my precision damage). Avenging Executioner is a fun one. I like lots of them for use as DM characters, but haven't played many for my own fun. (Often, this is the case largely because I only notice a class after I've started playing, and it would take some stretching to meet the prerequisites.)

Fighters. Why? One word--FEATS! I love feats and this class has them in spades. Aside from a generalist wizard or cleric, there is no other class on the planet that allows such overwhelming flexibility.

Bards. Everyone I know hates them; I think they rock, literally! I love bardic music, the ability to use some of the most used weapons in the game (i.e. long sword, short sword, short bow), and they can cast arcane "Cure" spells. Tell me that isn't cool.

Warlocks. I haven't had the chance to play one yet, but they look really cool. I'd love to play an Illumian Warlock. Have the sigils be the origin of the Eldritch Blast. And make them black instead of glowy, bright colors. That would just be wicked.

I am a huge fan of the beguiler! It's the first rogue that can invisible-ize without a wizard/magic item! wOOt!

I love the Dragonheart Mage from RotD! You can learn all utility/save-or-suck(die) spells and just channel them into your breath weapon when you need to deal actual damage! Sweet!

Maybe my favorite character I ever had was one who died before he ever got a chance to deal or be dealt a single HP of damage. The odd part? He was a Barbarian with an 18 CON who died following a failed *Fort* save.

I am also a fan of various variant classes from Dragon #310-312; the Exoticist comes to mind, as does the Kensai base class.

Also in that last vein, I am currently playing a Variant Thug from UA who is an Anthropomorphic-Medium-Viper, who wishes to become a Poisoner from Dragon #312.

Lastly, people seem to like skillmonkeys>spellcasters>fighters>Nature-guys>paladin/monks, in roughly that order. Agree/disagree?

Im a caster fan :vaarsuvius:

Base classes my favorites are (in no particular order)
Sorcerer-spontaneous casting is something I love
Wizard-so much variety in spell choice!
Bard-Hey! An arcane caster who can heal! And has illusion/enchantment spells to boot! (My two favorite schools, followed by divination)
Archivist-The divine wizard, liked for all the same reasons

Prestige classes wise:
Malconvoker-The dark side of summoning without actually being evil :)
Ultimate Magus-Blends the sorcerers spontanious casting with the depth of wizard spells
Fochulan Lyricist-Blends the divine with the arcane while still being able to get top tier bard spells with a million different skills-the ultimate utility character, IMO

My favorite class is the fighter. I like being in the front lines whacking away at things. Plus, there are so many ways to customize him by choosing different feats.
Next is the wizard. I'm probably the worst wizard ever. My idea of a fun wizard is only blasting spells. I really like hitting things with a disintegrate of a meteor swarm. It's just so much more fun than using finger of death.

Sounds about right. I think that's part of why I really like skill tricks from Complete Scoundrel--it lets skill monkeys have even more fun with their skills. I also feel like there's a lot more room for customization among skills than basically with anything else. You can max out however many skills you have, or you can take a few points out from one skill and have more skills. So you have two equal-level characters, one if a master of disguise, and one can pull off a disguise well enough but is a lot better at making people like him. And so on.

My favorite class is definitely wizard, and not just for the crazy amount of power you get. I also like role playing a scholar, an amateur neurosurgeon, a professor, an archaeologist that explores dungeons not just for loot but to write books and publish essays about his findings...and blow some **** up while he is at it too :)

I love the idea of being a valiant, powerful warrior, but whenever I play one in D&D 3.5, especially past level 9 or so, I just end up feeling like a weakling compared to the casters.

I absolutely adore the hexblade. couple it's curse with the variant from PHB2, and a kiai shout, and EWP: bolas, you're having all kinds of fun. yes, I know these things only really function on lower level/hd guys... but it's still fun. I love being a debuffer. I think that the hexblade feats presented in dragon magazine help the class out immensely, but really the only thing I would change in the class as it is, is have +charisma modifer added to the uses per day of it's curse ability.

I love rogues and all things skillmonkey. I like being a skillfull dude that manipulates situations into his favor, whether it's on the battlefield or during conversations with NPC's. I also like having all the party's gold.
