[Present 2.0]

Simple Rules.

Everyone can award 10 Points to his Favorite Character, 9 to his second favorite Character etc. up until his 10th favorite Character, who gets only one Point.

Funny about Redcloak: with your updated ballot, he's one of only two characters on every ballot so far. (Along with Vaarsuvius).

For further consideration, a couple of worthy characters that almost made my ballot and haven't made the board yet: Therkla the half-orc ninja, the unnamed Ancient Black Dragon, and Ian Starshine. (ETA: Oh, and also Lord Shojo!)

(Also, I'm a little bit shocked I'm the only vote for the Monster so far. I think he might be the protagonist, guys...) (Oops, Alcore ninja'd me and has totally made up for the lack of love for the MitD up till now!)

To be fair on Celia, her worldview makes far more sense when you consider that she's not only a civilian, she's one from a world where death, and violence in general, are treated in a far less blase manner then they are on OOTS Earth. You may have noticed she was on my list too, though a few slots lower down.

Oh, I agree that she's a believable and self consistent character who serves her function within the plot and has an interesting perspective. I just find her deeply unlikable. Kinda like Eugene.

My response is informed by entertainment/enjoyment per amount of screen time, such that when this character is on screen, I get a positive reaction because what Rich does with this character so often works.

10 P: O-Chul (pound for pound best character in the series, and I don't have the KS volume ... dying to get it)
9 P: Shojo (A well realized sneaky chess master sort of character; it wasn't until my second read through of the Azure City arc that I really appreciated this character)
8 P: Belkar-gets a lot of the best lines and a growth arc that I found surprisingly enjoyable(before that, comic relief made up for other shortcomings)
7 P: Durkon (while a caricature of D&D dwarves, this is a character that I find lovable due to pathos)
6 P: Lien (Not much screen time, but this character pleases me with every appearance)
5 P: Roy (Sufficient funny lines to overcome talky man problem)
4 P: Haley's Dad (Not a lot of screen time, but what's on screen is good).
3 P: Xykon-gets some of the best lines, and as the BBEG is at least not stupid
2 P: Bandana (I like her better than Julio, and I HAD to pick at least one pirate, nautical bias is me).
1 P: Tarqin (A valiant attempt at a charismatic villain who is not self aware; it took a second read through of BRITF to appreciate what Rich did with this character, a bad guy)

Why some faves didn't make the cut:
Elan's insipidity overbalances some of his fine contributions and his development arc
Haley's too much drama characteristic overcomes my inherent love of thieves/rogues, which is the class I've played most over all editions of D&D. ( Some of her bluff vignettes strike me as deus ex machina .... though I suppose that's part of the joke? Roy's comment after the ship repair is so on point)
V: While I liked the lesson on power embedded in the character development arc, and V gets some great lines, V never clicked for me. Well thought out, and I like what Rich does in exploring the magic and magic user thing. Constant message is "magic can't solve everything" though it can handle many things. (Maybe I just wearied of the overwordy gag early on?)

Had I not read through, with some care, both the Azure City and BRITF arcs a second time, this time watching what Rich does with the character rather than what's at face value, neither Shojo nor Tarqin makes the list.

I am hoping that Lien gets more screen time in the future, because she is, to me, the best example of the knight in shining armor paladin, riding about on her shark and being heroic, that is an almost perfect "anti Miko" presentation. O'Chul is a whole different take on Paladin, and one I wish more players would try to learn from at various tables.

I would say "which characters are your favorite by whatever quality or combination of qualities makes them your favorite." So it *shouldn't* be "who would win in a fight" or "who really is in the right" unless those happen to be the qualities that make a character your favorite.

Also: I'm glad to see Belkar and Shojo get some love. Ian and Qarr, too, even if not enough to get them on the board.

Yeah, most of my list is due to the characters establishing an inherent nobility, or living their lives on their terms, even if it meant losing their lives. Or just being underappreciated (e.g. the demon roaches).

You can place [fieldset] inside the table seperating each 'box' with a line. Due to the nature of this list you would only need one row to make [fieldset] look nice. By making too many columns one can place inside the borders with[i] small images. This would form a decorative border. Old celtic art (and other similar styles) which can loop in on themselves works the best.

To be honest, I think he may suffer on a poll like this by being quite Vanilla, there's nothing to hate about him, but not a lot of eye-catching uniqueness to fall in love with.

Him not getting so many points doesn't necessarily mean he isn't loved, just that there's not a lot to grasp on to in his character, which means he ends up not being many people's favourite, but not being many people's least favourite...

Also, Hinjo isn't very popular, despite his relatively important role. My guess is, that he doesn't have the sense of Experience and Veteran-Status, that O-Chul or Lien have.

I'm not sure why we'd even compare those three-- just cause they're all paladins? It's not just who a character is presented as at introduction, it's what we learn about them from what we see them do. Ho Thanh and O-Chul could be practically interchangeable when first introduced: the gruff, serious paladin.

But then Ho Thanh makes a tough decision in a dark situation and sacrifices his life for his cause, which gets him some love. And O-Chul perseveres through a horrific POW situation, recognizes and kindles the humanity of one of his captors, planting the seeds of its subversion, and bides his time and chooses the right moment to take action in a courageously level-inappropriate encounter. Which gets him a LOT of love!

Lord Hinjo is... also a paladin. The best thing I can say about him is that he serves his purpose within the plot, is a serviceable straight man for Elan while Roy is life-challenged, and if he were more interesting, he'd distract from other characters who are the actual focus of scenes he is in.

Haha! 50 characters have received at least a point so far, that would be a MASSIVE tournament. The reason I've been tracking the Top 16, is that I was thinking of doing a standard Sweet 16 tournament: 8 opening round matchups, 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals, and a final.

That's 15 polls over the course of 5 weeks. You could double that to 32, but that just sounds like overkill.

But if people want to give their more obscure faves a shot, a less unwieldy way would be to add a wild card slot. For example, you could give only the top 15 guaranteed seeding, and give the 16th slot to whoever wins a BIG poll of all the rest of the characters.

I've been giving a lot of thought to ways that we can get the whole field of characters involved (thanks for the suggestion, Bob McSurly) without it getting unwieldy.

Here's my idea: Give seeding to the 13 top point getters. Break the remaining character into two wild card blocks: call the top 1/3 the X Block and the bottom 2/3 the Z Block. Have all of the characters in X Block fight it out in one poll and all of the characters in Z Block in one other poll. Then have a 15-competitor tournament with a bye for first seed, and the winners of X Block treated as 14th seed and the winners of Z Block treated as 15th seed.

So First Seed would skip the first round and in the second round face the winner of the poll between eighth and ninth Seed. Second Seed would face the Z-Block winner, third seed would face the X-Block winner, fourth seed would face 13th seed, etc.

I've been looking for a decent bracket generator, but they all suck. So here's the brackets in a table, hopefully that helps with visualizing.

I think that picking 20 would have worked. The comic has so many characters that I'd think most forum users could have picked 20 of their favorites. Though the tough choice of narrowing your favorite characters down to the top 10 is fun too. Either way works well, in my opinion.

Almost impossible to narrow it down, as should be obvious by the list of HMs. It feels wrong not having Durkon in there, and I may be doing Belkar a disservice, since he's been my least favorite member of the Order for most of the strip, but has certainly come on strong recently...I'm generally a fan of those who have had long or complex arcs, while I award "bonus points" for being entertaining. The top two have been locked in in my mind for a long time, but the rest of the list could be rearranged in a number of different orders and the last two slots could be swapped out for half my HM list. Miko is a character who I find repellent as a person but fascinating as a character/arc, so I like throwing her a bone with my last point, even if she's more minor than everyone else there.

Maybe 15 would've been a good compromise?

But then I thought "those at the top of the wildcard rankings should get some advantage, how can I do that?" And my first thought was to break the wildcards in two groups and make the top group smaller. Fewer competitors, (although tougher) less likely to get lost in the crowd.

So that gives me two wildcards, so my next thought was "a couple of the top seeds are getting the advantage of facing a wildcard, why don't I make that seeds 2 & 3, and give the top seed an even bigger boost: a bye!"

So with seed 1 getting a bye, that leaves 15 tournament slots to fill. With the bottom 2 going to wildcards, that leaves 13 slots to fill.

Your question makes me reconsider, though: why give the top 3 seeds something special, but nothing for the 4th seed? Maybe I should split the wildcard competitors into three blocks instead of two. And if I'm changing things, I have some new ideas on how to split the wildcard field into blocks that might be more fair (and interesting!) but this is already a big wall of text, so I'll go into that next time.

Oh, I see-- you're doing a bye and two wild cards. I thought you were doing three wild cards for some reason. Yeah, I'd suggest two byes / two wild cards or four wild cards. But I like bracket symmetry.

I agree with your last thoughts as I intended to suggest making three qualifying spots instead of two, with no bye. The 1st seed's advantage over 2nd and 3rd could be of "playing against" the "lower-profile" qualifier. (I like how you divided the qualifying competition based on number of votes.)

Hmmmm. I definitely don't like the idea of 2 byes. It takes away the drama of who will take the top spot if second place gets the exact same reward.

I was thinking of expanding to three wildcards and mixing it up so that the competitors who almost made it get the easier path: the character who almost made it competing with the bottom third, the next two taking on the middle third, and the top third competing for the last slot.

However, it sounds like 4 wildcards is a lot more popular an option than 3 wildcards and a bye. But if we do 4, I'd definitely want the Block that takes in the #1 seed NOT to be mixed but to come straight out of the bottom quarter of the wildcard competitors, to reward the #1 seed for winning.

Saturday afternoon, when it's been a full week, I'll post a few matchups: most likely 2 midseed matchups and 2 wildcard blocks.

So now is the time to give me any ideas you may have about the best way to run the tournament (I love to hear people's ideas) or to get in a last-minute ballot.

Keep in mind OP Present 2.0 will continue to run this popularity poll after the week is up, the only difference is that ballots will no longer count towards tourney seeding.

Picking four has been suggested, but honestly I think people will have a tough time picking four in some blocks. So I'm thinking of doing something a bit more flexible.

Each voter gets 4 points for each block, that they can divide up however they choose...

I could change my Vote, so that two Characters, that I like more than the Characters in the Places above them switch the Place with them. But I think, that would be a little bit pathetic. Especially now, when it doesn't affect who comes into the Tournament. It could also start a chain reaction, where everyone does it and it becomes impossible to keep track.

That system essentially collapses down to plurality. The lesser of two evils type of tactical voting still has all the same appeals, you just have to do it three times. Which means the spoiler effect is still totally there.
My personal recommendation would be "vote for as many candidates as you want, but not more than once per candidate". This mostly eliminates the spoiler effect, and since whether you vote for one candidate doesn't affect whether you can vote for another candidate, there is a lot less incentive to vote tactically.
If you do want it weighted somehow, you could just use a very simple version of range voting. Like say, give each candidate a 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. This has the same advantages mentioned above, but still allows the voters to express preference for one candidate over another. Picking four isn't quite as good as picking as many as you want, but it still beats systems where you have a set number of points/votes to give out and can give them all to one person. And don't forget Condorcet! It gives a bit less freedom than range voting does, but is a much more fun system to run! (if you're a complete nerd like me. Otherwise, range is much more fun, because it's substantially simpler:)

It is, unless the way to count the votes differs in some way. Here, in each step, the lowest vote is discarded, and all votes recalculated based on remaining preferences, until an option has absolute majority.

It is still sometimes to a voter's advantage to rank a more popular candidate higher than a candidate they actually prefer in AV. And if you give a "strong" candidate your top spot, you can't also give it to your actual favourite. In range voting, it is never to a voter's advantage to rate a candidate higher than someone they prefer to that candidate, and even if you want to give a "strong" candidate your top score, it is always in your best interest to also give your top score to your actual favourite.
Furthermore the Alternative vote is a ranked (ordinal) system, so it is bound by Arrow's Impossibility Theorem, while Range voting, being a rating (cardinal) system, is not.
I would argue that it is also easier to count in this case, because you can very easily keep a running tally, whereas AV requires you to do all the eliminations and what not at the end.

I think that the goals of this thing make strategic voting a very different thing than if we were electing an emperor for life or whatever. In political elections it's rational to vote for a candidate who has a good shot, but you prefer slightly less than a long shot, because you don't want to "waste your vote."

We're just aggregating our community favorites, so strategic voting works in the opposite direction: "Vaarsuvius is my actual favorite, but they have plenty of support already, I like Greysky almost as much, and he needs my vote more.

It should also be kept in mind that the research on the theoretically best balloting systems people are referencing are based on secret ballots. Whereas we have perfect information on the ballots preceding ours and none on later ballots. So I don't think there's anything wrong with saying "I didn't realize Ancient Black Dragon would get no love at all, that changes things for me, I'm changing my ballot." Since that's exactly what I did...

Since that's exactly what I did...I think there is something wrong with this (not "wrong" in the ethical sense, though). We are asked to rank candidates based on our top 10 personal list. From strategic voting, I could give, say, Right-Eye a 10, since I think he's an underrated character that deserves to be higher. While I do like Right-Eye quite a bit, he is not my favorite character, and thus I only gave him 3 points.

With this, I've given Right-Eye a solid boost, since he was pretty low on the list. Elan is far from moving up, so I might as well give him a solid boost, since he's my 4th favorite character. Vaarsuvius is my favorite character, so V should get a high score as well (perhaps even higher, I'm not sure). Redcloak, who is my second favorite character, and O-Chul, who is my third favorite character, are only close to my favorite character. It thus makes sense to give them 0 points.

Belkar gets a solid boost since I like him more than the Monster in the Darkness (as a character in the story, anyway), and he's far enough from Elan for me not to worry about that at the moment. Durkon get 6 points since he's far away enough from Elan not to threaten him. Roy, who originally got 4 points, and Haley, who originally got 2 points, now get 0, since Roy threatens Belkar and Haley threatens Elan and Durkon. I give 5 points to Lord Shojo since he threatens no one else so I might as well give him a boost.

After that I'm out of characters to boost, so I might as well throw my remaining votes away on characters no one has voted for. In this case, Rat, Tiger, Pig, and Monkey, but I could find some other character if need be.

This, I believe, is problematic. My original vote illustrated approximately how much I liked the different characters. My new*, tactical vote does not. I think it's better if people just vote for the characters they like the most instead of bothering with tactical voting.

I'm not suggesting that everyone should fully gamify and strategize their ballot. Just that we aren't doing a secret ballot, so who's gotten love so far and who voters may feel is underated is bound to influence ballots at least subconsciously.

I propose a benign dictatorship where I accept suggestions and ideas about stuff like tournament format and voting, but make the ultimate call.

For example, I started with the idea of one bye and two wildcards, but there was significant support for a more symmetrical tournament. I hated the idea of both top seeds getting a bye, but didn't hate the idea of four wildcards, as long as the one in the 16 slot was significantly weak, as an appropriate reward for first seed.

Similarly, I was leaning towards each balloters having a set number of points to divide how they like among each wildcard block. But listening to different perspectives on this, I am now leaning towards a simplified Likert scale: you can give approval, or STRONG approval to as many candidates as you choose in the wildcards. Ie: 0,1, or 2 points. I think this will do a good job of genuinely capturing the group sentiment towards these characters.

If you agree, let me know. If you feel strongly that we should try something else there are still a few hours to change my mind. (If you're not too busy watching The Defenders)

I have also given all due consideration to the Dr Zero-ocracy proposal, and reject is as being "no fun."

I just double-checked my spreadsheet and it matches your ballot as currently shown in the thread. If you changed it only minutes after posting, I likely never saw the original version. But I'm glad you asked me to check, best not to assume!

Thanks for the vote of confidence on my balloting scheme for the Wildcard blocks.

Keep in mind that the actual one on one matchups will be simple FPTP voting: each person votes for one of the two. Or abstains if they can't decide between the two.

A lot of the alternative voting schemes seem like a way to efficiently play out a whole tournament with one ballot and tabulation.

A tournament does about the same thing, but is designed to take longer and be more dramatic. In other words, more suitable to a fun pastime, as opposed to making an important decision...

In all this talk about balloting schemes, I forgot I was also going to talk about scheduling. My idea is to post a few contests today, and everyone would have two days to debate and five days to vote, and next Saturday afternoon a winner is declared. Then on Tuesday put up another batch, with the same kind of schedule: debate Tuesday and Wednesday, voting open Thursday through Tuesday. If we stagger like that, we should always have something going on, but not so much at a time as to be overwhelming, and we should be done in about a month. (Well, the finals would be posted in a month, ultimate winner declared a week after that.)

Actual reason: habit. It's what I've done in the past.

Post facto justification: drama. Single-elimination tournaments are built for drama more than getting the most equitable result. Every competitor is always on their last chance to survive to the next round. As opposed to "I have more points now. I wonder how much that will matter?"

I mean, we're doing this for the fun of it, why not maximize drama?

ETA: Voting for seeding is final now. You may still vote in the popularity poll and OP Present 2.0 will track your ballot, but it will no longer count towards seeding or wildcard block placement in the forthcoming Favorite Character Tournament.

I may be wrong on all counts, but I think Zhou is somebody from O-Chul's backstory, That Guy with a Halberd is Jiminy, the Squid is Squid-Thingy, and the Former Hobgoblin Supreme Leader is this guy (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0149.html).

I like this idea quite a bit. I do think the range should be greater than -1 to 3, though.

Hmmm, well I can see the advantages of both sides. More gradation means you can distinguish between how much you like more characters, but less gradation makes it easier to define what each score means for greater comparability.

Take a ten point scale for example: what exactly does it mean that one character got 7 points and another got 8?

Whereas I think the definition of each score is pretty clear w the -1 to 3 scale.

Okay, so here's what the ballot would look like. Just testing the formatting and looking for feedback. It includes every character with over 10 appearances based on the appearance-counting thread, with a few exclusions, plus any character who was ever on a ballot in this poll.

(The exclusions are most of the steeds, the spiky summon, and the three soul grafts. Haerta was the most interesting of the three, but she didn't meet the cutoff for appearances because she was strongest and escaped first, so I decided to exclude all three.)

Simple Rules.

Everyone can award 10 Points to his Favorite Character, 9 to his second favorite Character etc. up until his 10th favorite Character, who gets only one Point.

This will be my Choice. We'll add all the Points up and see who gets the most Points. I hope nobody unnecessarily complicates my Choice by picking one of the three fiends as an individual. Well, until someone can convince me, that there are noteworthy differences between them(the color of their Speech Bubble doesn't count), I'll count every Vote for one of them as Vote for alle Three.
