View Full Version : Bypassing poison immunity?

Most things without a Con score ignore poisons basically entirely as a side effect. Some more are specifically immune to poisons (maybe they have some levels of paladin, though that might be a win for us over all).

Is there any way to ignore immunities to poison?

Gating Serrtous, the Elder evil is a little extreme so some more mundane solutions are:
Positoxins from Libris Mortis work against undead.
Ravages and afflictions in Exalted deeds bypass poison immunity of evil creatures, but consult your DM if they are actually poisons or "totally not poisons".
Some individual poisons bypass poison immunity but generally they are not worth it. Vile Darkness has 2 of them IIRC.

I don't know of any all-purpose methods in printed 1st party material (short of, as peacenlove indicated, palling around with Sertrous or using Sarrukh-level cheese to copy Sertrous's Poisoner's Breath ability), which is one of many reasons why going poison-heavy isn't really an optimal idea as a PC. Unfortunate, really, because it's a neat concept.

If you're playing Pathfinder, a level 8 Alchemist can select the Celestial Poisons (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/alchemist/discoveries/paizo-alchemist-discoveries/celestial-poisons-su/) discovery, which causes any poison they administer to a weapon to bypass the innate immunity to poisons of Undead and Outsiders. The target's other resistances may still make it immune to the effects of the poison, but the poison itself will work.

Paladins are immune to diseases, not poisons

The SRD's section on poison says:

"Oozes, plants, and certain kinds of outsiders are also immune to poison, although conceivably special poisons could be concocted specifically to harm them."

I cannot seem to find this statement in the core rulebooks though

That line does in fact exist in the core rulebooks, it's in the DMG's glossary, page 297 under "Poison Immunities". The full section says:

Poison Immunities
Wyverns, medusas, and other creatures with natural poison attacks are immune to their own poison. Nonliving creatures (constructs and undead) and creatures without metabolisms (such as elementals) are always immune to poison. Oozes, plants, and certain kinds of outsiders (such as tanar’ri) are also immune to poison, although conceivably special poisons could be concocted specifically to harm them.

So in context, it's stating that creatures without metabolisms (ie: no con score) cannot be harmed by any poisons (though still are able to be affected by ravages and poxitoxins, since they aren't technically posions), but creatures with a con score like those mentioned could have special poisons crafted specifically to harm them, even if they're immune to traditional poisons.

Spark of Life (Cleric 3/Druid 4) eliminates poison immunity for Undead.

Greater Humanoid Essence (Artificer 6/Cleric 7) eliminated poison immunity for constructs.

(both are SR:Yes Will-negates spells)
