As I'm setting up plans for a game where I intend the party to have an NPC companion (to boost numbers and so forth), I'm wondering - do people use monsters at all for this role, in place of a Player's Handbook character?
I'm sorely tempted to cheat and make the NPC immediately lovable by making her a Pixie (I'm thinking, Nature Cleric would suit) even though some of her innate skills may make her a touch overpowerful for use in a party context.
But, in the broader sense, has anyone used a Monster (with or without classes) as an NPC, and how did you find the experience?
