The numbers to the right of each character's name is the sum of the points awarded to the character on all ballots in the Character Popularity Poll thread over the past week, and then the number of ballots the character appeared on, the average points of those who included them, and the number of voters who gave each their 10 point position.

In addition, Therkla earned 39 nods to win her Wildcard block, 6 nods ahead of the runner ups, Thog. (It was the orc block!)

The fact that I've started a new wave of matchups does NOT mean that the matches that began on Tuesday are closing, those will continue until this coming Tuesday. Similarly, I will then begin a new batch, but that will not mean that these polls are closing: they will remain open until next Saturday.

The only rule is to vote for the character who is your favorite of these two. Whoever gets the most votes goes on to the second round, while the other is eliminated.

The qualifications for "Favorite" are personal and up to the decision of each balloter alone. This is not a competition for who would win in a fight, or who is the most moral... UNLESS that is what makes them YOUR favorite.

O-Chul is not as hilarious as Therkla (even if some jokes are pretty good), but he has plenty in the epic-and-badass sector, enough to overcompensate.

Well, it seems obvious that Mr. Stiffly will win this one, but I personally found most of his strips interesting only when they also featured MitD and/or Redcloak. So I vote Therkla.

I really disagree that Therkla is forgettable, she is one of the best characters to make it into this tournament from the Wildcards. Her tragedy is deserving of the monument Elan made (repurposed?) for her.

Too bad she got such a tough opponent in the first round: but that's the nature of being a wildcard. And "never really stood a chance" was her story, after all.

What I have to say about O-Chul is the same as what I said about the Monster. Go read it in its thread.

This is really cruel, as I truly love them both. If I chose with my heart I'd probably vote for the half-orc, but O-Chul is more of a well-rounded character, so... nope, I still vote for Therkla.

I genuinely like Therkla, and considered voting for her just to make things a tiny bit more even. But we're supposed to vote for our favourite character of the two, and mine is definitely O-Chul, an exemplar of what a paladin should be.

Therkla was OK, but is outclassed by a fair bit on this one.

If her plot had gone on longer, maybe I'd vote differently, certainly the idea that both she and O-Chul wanted to save everyone, but with different methods, would have been an interesting contrast. But as it was, her time was brief, and her wanting Elan to leave his happy but long-distance, no-communication girlfriend grated on me a bit too much.

O-Chul is one of the best characters in the comic, and he wins this one easily for me. Therkla's popularity frankly mystifies me--her arc ended well, but I find the "bad guy switches sides because the good guy is hot" trope to be one of the more grating ones out there. If someone's going to change sides, I'd prefer they do so for less shallow reasons. And yeah, I do find her a bit forgettable as well.

O-Chul For many reasons, not the least of which is his working with MiTD to become what O-Chul knows he is: "a good man (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0654.html)."

Therkla is an assassin. I like what Rich did with her, in terms of making her more than a two dimensional assassin, and allowing Elan's good looks and being a very nice guy to trigger a "love at first sight" kind of thing. He made more of that than most could have, and I absolutely loved how Elan set up her grave site. That was really cool writing. I also like her version of the last words, very different from Miko's "I can live with that" that 2d8hp cited: I'll take my chances that the Afterlife...won't have any punishment worse...than not being with you. That's old school romantic, heroic style story telling. Nice.

But all said and done, it stretched my suspension of disbelief a bit too far.

Therkla has been valiantly fighting her fate, but this closes tomorrow, so it's looking like it's all in vain...

honestly, therkla never did it for me
yes, she was an interesting look into loyalty towards you "family" and the one you fall in love with (seriously, the idea she had that she and elan would fight against hinjo is both sad and laughable)
but again, what is her purpose? I think her grand purpose was to shake elan of some of his naievity, I'd rather doubt that elan could have shaken himself out of the illusion in the pyramid without the lesson that "love doesn't solve everything and sometimes even complicates things"

but overall her arc was a bit too short

o-chull on the other hand, oh man

his defiance of redcloack, the sheer badassery shown during his imprisonment and escape, the mere fact that he got into the MITD's brain by just being a nice guy to what's essentially a monster

hells, even his defence of miko in her death shows that as a palladin one doesn't need to always tell the truth if it leaves a comrade in arms in greater honor
