That should help. Basically it's a style of game that is more conducive to multiple players with different schedules. You show up for a session and your group is whoever showed up & your adventure shouldn't span much more than that session. There are rules to make that all work, mainly a town that serves as a start/end point & quest hub.

Sounds fun, haven't had the pleasure. Good luck!

On the topic, does anyone have any neat resources for a west marches style campaign?
Hexmaps, encounter tables, etc?

Here (http://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/) it's explained by the one who is the reason for the term, if not exactly the inventor of the concept.

I have a bunch of stuff lying around, but I'm afraid it's not uploaded anywhere. All that's up is our game wiki (http://nanmehtar.wikispaces.com/).

I recently started building a West Marches campaign. Check out these awesome source materials for how to build a Hex Crawl:

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/arsphantasia.wordpress.com/2014/02/20/hexcrawl-resources/amp/

But this particular resource takes the cake. It's a random encounter table for 5e Hex crawls that can be used to generate the hexes before the start of the game and as a random "event" table during the game*.

The downside is that it requires three books from Raging Swan Press to use. But those three books are probably the best value I've ever spent on a TTRPG product. They're great. If you're not sure, check out some of their free sample stuff.

Use this link and scroll down to the linked document by ElfShadow (3rd comment):

* I don't personally generate these at the table. I pre-generate a smaller number of "events" for different situations.

I heard a month ago there is a reddit based West Marches game that accepts new players. Don't really know the details since I didn't try it but here is the link https://www.reddit.com/r/West_Marches/
