View Full Version : Psychic Thievery?

I've been digging the idea of a thief who uses their mind-powers instead of hands to steal things. This was inspired by the Spheres of Power's Telekinetic sphere, but I was turned off by how I'd have to use almost all my powers until level 5 for marginal to null combat capacity, just to do it.

Is there a reasonable enough class (in PF or 3.5) that can do this sort of thing. I'm looking for something around tier 3, maybe tier 2. It does not need to be strictly psionic.

How do you feel about homebrew?

I've got a base class (the Kleptologue, in my signature) which ought to fulfill your criteria.

3.5 has Psychic Rogue and Lurk.

Pathfinder has the Cryptic (3rd party) or you can be a Trickster Medium. There's probably a flavor of Occultist that will work too but I'm less familiar with that class.

So, basically, you want a psionic version of the Arcane trickster's Ranged Legerdemain?

PF's Mesmerist (first party) might be what you're looking for, but it may be a bit too mage-y if that's a concern (it's a 6th-level psychic caster with a greater focus on mind manipulation than actual thievery).

EDIT: Though with the Vexing Trickster archetype, it definitely becomes much more thief-y.

Then, if you multiclass it with say, an Eldritch Scoundrel Rogue (giving you the sneak attack and arcane casting prerequisites), you can then take Arcane Trickster, which gets you Ranged Legerdemain (so you can use Mage Hand to steal things from afar).

Or you can skip all that for straight Vexing Trickster Mesmerist and take Pilfering Hand as a 2nd-level psychic spell, which is essentially Mage Hand but for stealy things, though it's not as at-will as the Ranged Legerdemain option.

It does not need to be strictly psionic.

Ranged Ledgermain + a bunch of uses of Mage Hand probably fits the bill. Maybe even Master of the Unseen hand.

A shadowcaster / Rogue could fit this perfectly. Take quicker than the eye from the link above and the umbral hand Mysteries. Master pickpocket feat from City of stormreach.

Can Shadowcasters count as spellcasters for the purpose of PrCs? Because that would work well I think.

Is there some rule which prevents usage of Sleight Of Hand (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/sleightOfHand.htm) skill with Far Hand (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/farHand.htm) power?
If not - then there we go... :smallwink:

Also, Astral Spider (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/pse/20021220a) can pilfer "Fine objects up to 1 pound, such as keys or gemstones"

For heavier objects - there are Telekinetic Force (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/telekineticForce.htm) and Telekinetic Sphere, Psionic (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/telekineticSpherePsionic.htm)

If you don't playing as Psychic Rogue (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040723b), and need more skill points, Shadow Mind (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20021025b) is a full-manisfesting PrC with 4+ skill points (Psychic Assassin (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20040723d) have 4+ too, and may give you Skill Mastery at 5th level, but it will cost you 3 ML, plus usual problems with "Assassin classes")
