View Full Version : How (Relatively) Effective Is Fighter's Monster Hunter Archetype?

Title contains the question, body contains a detail; if I take the Martial Adept feat to pick up two maneuvers from Battle Master and an extra superiority die, is Monster Hunter a useful archetype when building for attacks-per-round damage-per-hit? Or is Champion still the superior option? Do they balance out over a certain number of levels, does critfishing fall behind at a certain stage or pull ahead?

Champion is not the superior option for any form of play style.

Using SD for saves and getting protection from evil is very good. Coupled with indomitable, you are very sticky in a fight.

With martial adept you get 2 more of your choice.

I like it.

As for champion, IMO it works best with shield master and brawny, squat nimbleness, or expertise in athletic from a level of rogue

Or snag 2 levels of barbarian for reckless attack and get GWM and PAM, advantage may return more crits

Played one at level 11. It was pretty effective. I usually saved my dices for save bonuses though. Martial Adept seems like a tax. But it's nice to have some extra tricks.

Oh yeah, and since you are using UA you might as well multiclass with Hexblade if you have the stats. Expanded crit range is awesome with the Monster Slayer feature. Depending on the interpretation you can deal 4d10 or a flat 40 extra damage to monsters.

It is, but only one: "Long slogs with extremely few short rests and lots of fights between long ones."

yeah, a more accurate version might be: champions (single-classed) are not the best for any *plausible* play style. (well, i suppose it gets more plausible at level 18, but until then, the fact that you bever run out of critical hits is fairly irrelevant since you do run out of hit points, and you need some *really* long adventuring days for champion to pull ahead of a battlemaster in total damage... and even then, unless the rest of the party is equally capable of sustained combat, not that helpful).

of course, champion can have some synergy with builds that *really* love crits. but that's just a 3-level dip.

as to the original question: monster hunter is pretty solid. with an extra superiority die and your two favourite battlemaster maneuvers, even better imo. you may not always want to use those 2 extra maneuvers, but having them there is a nice option.

This may be neither here nor there for the OP, but according to the YouTube channel for the XGtE videos, Monster Hunter will be moving officially to the Ranger.
