I tried to look first into the Darkness spell because of its name. But it create merely shadowy conditions and 20% miss chance. Is there any spell that creates magically total darkness? What is the lowest level of such spells?

No Light is a cantrip/orison in BoVD that does this, so level 0 is the lowest you can do this. Blacklight (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/spells/blacklight.htm) also creates darkness.

You could also use PF light rules, which are less silly.

The spell Assassin's Darkness from Complete Scoundrel creates a globe of absolute darkness which it later lists as being magical darkness.

Lowest level is 1. Use silent image to conjure a volume of black. Not black smoke or black fog. Just black. Even the see in darkness ability of certain high-level devils won't penetrate it (true seeing, on the other hand...)

Deeper darkness it is 3rd level is countered by daylight same level. Both arcane and devine

It isn't actually any deeper though (in 3.5.) A better name for it would be Longer and Wider Darkness, because that's all it does.

Thanks for your responses. I was fooled by deeper darkness too. I see the 3rd level spell and thought, even in the 3rd level I could not bring total darkness.

Do psionics count? Control Light is a level 1 power that allows you to tune up/down the illumination in areas of your choosing, and has a Concentration duration

The way 3E handles darkness is weird. You're generally better off using fog effects like Obscuring Mist.

The character could see in magical darkness and lacks the same ability for fogs. So I'm naturally more interested in magical total darkness effects.

Creeping Darkness is an awesome 4th-level Wu Jen spell that not only blinds, but deafens and fully stops people inside from casting spells with verbal components.

Shadow Canopy is a large-scale (25ft high, 100ft+50ft/CL radius sphere) absolute darkness that lasts for hours/CL
