Seven Gates of Hell

[OOC] (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?539193-Seven-Gates-of-Hell-OOC)

"Pay attention. There exist places beyond this world where the living may not visit. They are anathema to each other but also require the other to give balance to themselves. They cannot touch, and the world you humans live on is both the byproduct of their insensate conflict and a barrier to keep them separate. Should they converge, everything would be obliterated. The seven seals are an integral lock, for they are a stabilizing force for your world. If they were to..."

"Sorry, I wasn't listening. Sun's right in my eyes, can we switch places? Thanks. What'd you say, something about an explosion?"

"..."

"What? Look, you hired me to come visit these weird rocks and I brought the rod thing with me. I don't get paid to listen to lectures. Why are they glowing anyway? Kinda strange."

"...nothing. It doesn't matter anymore. Just stand there and hold the rod. It's almost over."

"Alright, don't get your smallclothes in a bunch. Remember, half up front, half afterward, that was the deal. You back out...things'll get ugly."

"There's no cause for concern. I'm sure you'll get everything you deserve."

"Good. How much longer are we gonna be here, I got...hey...what are you doing with that sword?"

/// DISCONTINUITY ///

"My lord, our seers have observed changes in the ruins. There is some kind of living glass that is growing up, forming unnatural structures for unknown purposes. Divinations within the area are becoming difficult; the seers estimate that the interference is either a byproduct or function of the glass domes and spires."

"...yes, my lord, though it's not just the glass. Some of them are claiming to see creatures moving about, though they are hazy, indistinct. The seers estimate that the glass hides the creatures forms as well."

"Of course, sire. I will return to them at once with your orders."

"Look below you! The battle is nearly over. We cannot afford to waste any of our lives. They've stopped the incursion from the destroyed gate. As long as the other gates hold, I don't see a reason to become involved."

"You still believe that we can escape this world, don't you? How long will it take for you to understand that we are trapped here until we die, which will happen sooner rather than later if we just stay up here and watch."

"Yes, I still have hope, something you seem to have forgotten. And as long as I command the voice of the council, we. will. abstain."

"I never mistook you for a fool. Does that make me the bigger fool, perhaps?"

"Your objections have been noted, and overruled. You are dismissed."

Day Fifteen
Plains of Glass (Hex 1713)
Ruins of the Judges Citadel

The rupture of the gate in Haven was felt everywhere across the lands. A shockwave that both came from Haven and seemed to be felt within everyone at the same time, all living creatures recognized the unexpected pull on their soul as something both immediately familiar and horrible. In the days after the explosion there were reports of otherwordly forces gathering in the strange growing glass ruins. Once identified as an enemy incursion, the best of the world gathered to push them back.

Victory was won, but at a high cost.

It has been five days since the Battle of Glass and the rumors that were spreading have now been confirmed to be true. The fiends were turned back. Something was done to prevent any more from coming through the ruptured gate. All defending forces had been destroyed in the attempt.

Even in the wake of cataclysm, life goes on. Those left behind worry about what comes next. Some retreat to prepare for their last days, while others prepare to ensure many more days to come. With the leaders and defenders of the world gone in a single battle, the rest of the world looks for someone to take their place.

That someone might be you. If you survive the night. If you survive the next ten minutes.

Through fate or choice you've found you've arrived the ruins of what once was called the Judges Citadel. The formerly imposing building of stone and metal is now almost unrecognizable, the building itself seemingly infected by tendrils of perfect glass that grows onto - into - the Citadel. At the moment you are hunkered down in the Citadel's outer bailey taking shelter from the things that are currently doing something to the bodies of the men-at-arms that were your escort into the wasteland. The monsters seem content to occupy themselves with your knights in the courtyard and you have a few moments to catch your breath and realize just how much trouble you're in.

"Get to the Citadel." The scribe had said, just earlier in the day, many miles away. "Get to the Judges vault. The relics of the High Mages are stored there. If we're going to stand a chance against the fiends again, we need them."

Easy for him to say. He wasn't stuck in this wasteland, surrounded by the weird glass that disrupted magic, hiding behind one of the few remaining walls, listening to the slurps and cracks - and dwindling screams - just on the other side. Couldn't be long before the things finished their meal.

Getting to the Citadel was easy. Getting back out would be another matter.

Kubei Knight of the Chalice (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1325647)
----- Kubei ducked down eyond the weird glassy wall out of sight of the creatures desecrating the bodies of the men-at arms. He sighed and offered a prayer to their souls now being carried to the gates. Several of the soldiers had been initiates in the Order if the Chalice and he would have to speak with grieving parents when he returned - not that after the battle of Glass most people would not already be grieving.

He was still shocked from the battle and the explosion and loss of Haven. He thanked the Gods that Maki and Keiko had managed to join one if the refugee caravans. The two men he had sent with them should keep them safe, even if he himself may not survive the next couple of days on the battlefield.

Taking off the mask briefly he dried the sweat from his forehead and looked to the others with him, heroes one and all - "Stealth or overpowering force? We can avenge the fallen and then move on the citadel". He offers gesturing over the ruin to the crunching sounds.

He glanced round, the wall again. Eyes darting looking for door or entrance into the heart of the Judges Citadel. His wings gifted by magic tensed on his back and he drew both of his long blades that despite their magic were nicked and discoloured from days of battle. As his hand closed on the second blade he could "feel" his surroundings as the battle focus descended and he searched out the largest and most dangerous of the creatures - that one would be his first target.

Liriel Spellstealer (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1327417)
----- At the first signs of trouble, Liriel calls out a warning, but too late. Before anyone has time to react, the creatures are already among the men at arms, killing them before they even really had a chance. Managing to quickly shoot the ones that were coming from her, Liriel paused for only a moment, before fleeing for the citadel, knowing that in the open, they were doomed. Seemingly untired by the frantic run, she prepares, casting heroism, and keen edge, before she takes a moment to think.
Oh, Liriel, the world's coming to an end, you should help! Ok, I said. It might be good to recall old times. Well, I remember them now!
As her heartrate starts to lower, the words of one of her companions... Kubi? Break through her panic. He had introduced himself, anyway.
And of course he wants to go and murder them all. But there are going to be more coming, and more, and we can't fight them all.
Liriel's response is quick, and soft.
"Stealth. We don't know how many there are or what they are, and we've been hired to get to the vault. There's nothing we can do for the dead now. And maybe, just maybe, they'll think they got us all. Never get into a fight you can't get away from if you can help it. And never get into a fight against unknown enemies if you can help it. And right now? We're stuck with both."
Even as she speaks, her eyes dart about, clearly looking for a route past the strange enemies. Even as she looks, however, her bone bow rests in her hands, with an arrow nocked.

Magnus hid from the powerful devils that were eating the remains of the men-at-arms. He recognised them as strangely mutated gelugons, fearsome ice devils. He could probably take down one without too much trouble, but fighting multiple could prove troublesome. He studied them from his hiding place, trying to decide what their best course of action would be. He was tempted to fight. Right now, they could fight the devils face to face, safe in the knowledge of where the enemy was and what they could do. He was not keen on them finding the humans at a bad, even perilous, moment, when they could prove too much for the small group of humanoids. They were too dangerous a threat to treat lightly.

Eventually, though, he nodded and added, "Stealth. With luck, we can avoid them completely, and they won't be able to call down others on top of us. Unfortunately, I have no skills at stealth, however, so I could pose a problem for the rest of you." He went back to studying the creatures, and tried to recall how good their powers of observation were. From what he could recall, they were far better than he would be at hiding. "I must warn you all, there is a strong chance I will be heard, and then we will have a fight, whether we want one or not. I can fly,
however, so if I do that, perhaps they will not be able to hear my movement."

He took a moment to call upon one of his few invocations, then he used his natural powers to rise an inch or two off the ground, still being careful to remain in hiding. He glanced over at the others to see what they thought, and how they would prepare.

Zilvfin was riding a pony.

He was happy, the little beast had no clue where, or why they were there, and he was amused by the thing, as it plodded along, on the never ending journey to no where in particular. It seemed so...senseless to him, which is why it took his attention wholesale, focusing every iota of his immense curiosity, on the little pony.

Dollop was dead now. In retrospect, Dollop the pony was a good little pony, but, after all things are said and done, tallied, and found wanting, he was just that, a pony.

Zilfv was at first, startled by the attack, his focus having been downwards towards his little normal beast of burden, and so he had but a moment in which he panicked. To the others, he appeared to stay on the pony, and summarily got struck down by one of the glass devils, where he promptly exploded in a cloud of color. He, however, was farther off behind some rocks, looking forlornly at his lost pet.

He expediently checked out his immediate surroundings, and then probed out telepathically to Boop. <you there?> he asked.

Boop appeared momentarily before him, bowing to his master as if presenting himself to the little gnome. <at your command my sire> he droned on, miming out the melodramatic response to his query.

He scowled, this was not the time to make light of the situation, he had lost his pet! <Good, go watch those things, make yourself look like a bug in case they can see through your veil.> he commanded, a sudden sense of urgency and rationale filling him, he let it sit and watched his familiar pop out of the air before him, grumbling as he did his masters bidding.

He found his companions grouped up quite easily, they were loud and obnoxious, it was ever a merciful miracle that they had not alerted the fiends consuming their men-at-arms like hors d'oeuvres laid before a mad and hungry prisoner. He quickly approached them, leaving another image of him standing their looking bewildered and amused at the same time. As he did, he mentally placed a sensor near the devils, so that he could monitor them, he felt the gem on his forehead activate, and he saw the double image appear, overlaying his own vision. He mentally dismissed the overlay for now, so he could focus, and talk to his companions, who were now ever ready to dive back into the pool of death and tumultuous and inevitable doom.

He telepathically speaks out to them all <Lets not be too hasty in our decisions, what makes it a good idea to go out and kill them? When we could escape, and go seek out our intended target, the Judges vault. Those creatures are distracted, lets not let vengeance, honor, and justice cloud our thinking.>

Kubei looked at the others with a tilt of the mashed face conveying dissatisfaction.
"They died for us and the survivors of Haven. My kin amongst them. The ice devils ecude fear but we can defeat them. If we destroy these few then they will not remain to plague us when we are discovered. A distraction here then we can disengage and assault somewhere else.". From the death grip on the twin hilts its clear that the Knight is barely restraining himself from engaging the devils. "If we attract too much attention I will cover the retreat, but I cannot let more good men die in vain. Too many have already fallen. Who will avenge them by my side?" ¥

Rasa

A study in contrasts is the human that floats gently just above the surface of the ground. Dressed in a simple monk's robe and carrying a humble pack one might assume that the figure (for all its disregard for gravity) was a simple hermit or pilgrim, harshly out of place in this desolate glass-land. The shield that floats before it and the gleaming golden spear in its hand, however, have a militaristic look that give lie to the quiet passivity of its attire. Its face is androgynous, and eyes that would normally be a pure white glow a piercing green color set against skin like smooth pale marble. Its fingernails are worn long, but are strangely dark and metalic looking. From beneath the robe extend cloven goat's hooves, fanciful leather bands wrapped around them appearing almost like boots.

The figure tilts its head at the urgency being expressed, and turns to look directly at the wall behind which they have found shelter, seeming to look through it... as it actually is, seeing the motion and presence of the foul demons on the far side as they feast. Turning back, they drift closer to the tense knight and ever-so-gently brush their fingers along the taught muscles of Kubei's arm. "I agree with you... Kubei. Though I can keep us safe enough, it is.... important... to ensure that we are not overwhelmed. If you like...", Rasa pauses, a longer pause than normal, "... I can remove one from the field of battle for a time... if that is of use... and I may even be able to fool one into death." Rasa smiles, a smile of charm but also an uncomfortable smile in light of their words.

The view from the mages eye high above the courtyard shows a grisly scene. All but one of the knights are dead or dying, the former having some fortune over the latter as their misery has ended. Two of the mutates slobber over the remains of the knights, chomping bodies in half with a single bite, no apparent end to their hunger. The third mutate leaps upon the lone knight as he tries to hobble towards where you are hiding and is crushed beneath the devils weight, his dying scream cut short.

Having a moment free from attack you look around the courtyard and find it mostly untouched by the devastation that leveled Haven. The bright floating wizards star in the center of the keep plays prismatic light over the crawling glass, the star some artifact of the Citadels defenses. The colored light appears to be slowly eroding away at the invasive glass.

Prymphi Shinewhistle

Taking Kubei's side, Prymphi pulls back her hood and shakes out her cutely cut black hair. "They're pretty tough looking..." She frowns, but looks waaaay up to meet Kubei's eyes. "I'm with you." She beams, her blue eyes sparkling brightly. Adjusting her little belt, she produces two neatly maintained kukri from the loose folds of her clothes. "We can take them."

Determination spreads across her face when the devil kills the final knight. "They need to pay for what they've done... I knew some of those knights."

Magnus sighed slightly at the apparent desire among the group to fight. Although he was no good at stealth, he would prefer to try that method to bypass the gelugons, rather than fight them and risk bringing down others upon them. Still, there seemed to be no dissuading the group from a fight, so he would have to prepare for battle. He closed his eyes and activated his draconic auras, two of them appearing simultaneously. Most people who could use such an aura could only activate one at a time, but he had learned to activate two at once, which should provide a great deal of assistance to him in the coming battle.

He prepared to use his main weapon, his breath attack. He considered using a potion to improve its power, but decided against it. He knew that he would be able to defeat the enemy even without the potion, and that with the assistance of the rest of his new group, that shouldn't be too great a task. He still resolved to remain at the back of the pack, however, during the upcoming fight, since he was definitely not a melee adept, while these others seemed to be.

Hmmm... what do I know about these.... Yes yes Ipos I will tell them.

Speaking quietly... "Our enemies are Ice Devils... but unusual. This glass manifestation... is strange. Still, we should have care. Fire and Poison will have no effect... and if they are not silenced or slain... they will call more of their... brethren. They are also very dangerous in combat... if you stay too close." Rasa looks again through the walls, sensing their presence. "With any luck... I will be able to slay one of them outright... and perhaps imprison another while we handle the third. What do you think?"

"Well... that really depends. The have a cone of frigid air that could be troublesome... and they have some ability to make walls of ice. Oh, perhaps if you took their ability to call their devil allies?" As Rasa speaks, they drift from person to person, brushing their fingers gently against a face, an arm, a shoulder... the pressure just firm enough to be felt.

"There now. I have granted you all... the protection of Gaia. Be wary of fire and acid..."

Magnus was dismayed when one of their number suddenly leaped out of cover and attacked the enemy. He was not yet finished preparing himself for battle, and had several more invocations he had wanted to call upon before the fight started, if they were indeed to fight. But now, he had been called upon and had little choice other than to fight. He prepared to attack the enemy, though he was slower to act than the others, and was not even likely to be able to act before the gelugons which they were facing. He decided to keep his distance, and possibly fly past them, making his attack as he went, then covering some distance before turning back for a second strike, should one be needed.

The ice devil mutate raises it's head as Kubei approaches - a body dangling from within it's massive jaws - and Kubei's blade strikes true before the monster can react. His holy blade slices into the mutates skin, flakes of glass flying out of it's transparent carapace as green blood oozes from the wound. As fast and nimble as Kubei is, his second strike grinds down the side of the mutates hardened skin, unable to find purchase. The mutate stares down at the open wound, confused as to why it's not healing. It drops the half-eaten body and chitters something to the other mutates who stop what they are doing and each turns to stare at Kubei. The warrior feels the tendrils of unnatural fear tickling the back of his mind but he is made of sterner stuff than the knights who tried to flee.

Kubei's first attack hit, the second missed. Everyone else in the party can act. Kubei is immune to their fear aura.

A soft sigh escapes Rasa as the team surges to precipitous action. Brushing one hand over their head, iron nails tracing softly across the skin, Rasa prepares to act. A deep breath, a heavy sigh, and Rasa’s hands blur and shift, palms reversing so that their hands are reversed.

A glance upwards and Rasa flashes into the air, fading from reality for a moment to reappear one hundred feet above the battlefield. Brilliant emerald eyes narrow as Rasa’s gaze focuses on the remaining undamaged devil monstrosity. Magnus decided to stay in cover, but he leaned out in order to use his breath weapon against the enemy. Only one gelugon was still standing by the time he went to act. He decided that he would call upon one of his less common powers, rather than relying upon a fire breath. He knew that devils were immune to fire, so he decided to use a power more unusually resisted. He breathed, and a blast of pure force sprayed out in a line headed straight at the last gelugon.

Initiative: Monsters

The first mutate falls before blade and arrow. It's body crashes to the ground and explodes in a hailstorm of flying glass all around Kubei. The second mutate shrinks back from the phantasm and falls to the ground, shivering in fear and seizure. The third is assaulted by beams of energy and approached by the daring gnome but dodges her attack. The mutate stabs out with it's sharp limbs faster than the eye can follow. It tries to snatch the gnome up in a life-ending embrace but his arms can't break through the warding of Pyr's ring. It satisfies itself instead with more strikes, trying to kill what he cannot capture.

The shivering mutate stops jerking around on the ground and raises itself up. His transparent carapace is cracked through and through but the rents are slowly repairing themselves. He glares at Rasa flying high in the air but turns towards his companion and whispers words of power, the sound like iron-shod boots crunching on broken glass. A gloaming surrounds him and his ally, warding their bodies and spirits.

Zilfvin frowns, that should have worked he thought. Well, I'll have to bring the big spells out then.

He focused on his hands, conjuring a sphere of power at the center, his hands orbiting like looming moons above. It began to change colors, a sphere of multiluminescent energy crackled and spat as he summoned the spell that would do his bidding.

He had no idea what, but it was going to be something awesome, that was for sure.

Once it looked about right, he unleashed it upon the two devils, and he promptly turned into a statue, which he dismissed as he began to fall.

"Well, that wasn't what I wanted..." he said annoyingly to the air, as if some unseen force was messing with him directly.

Magnus saw that the creatures were regenerating, so he decided to try to use another breath weapon, this time one which would call upon the thunder to bypass their immunities and resistances. But he knew that only good attacks could completely kill the creatures, and he lacked any such attack. So he decided to just focus on damaging them, and to allow the others to kill them. He moved out of cover and slowly approached the gelugons. He took a deep breath, then launched his attack, which created a cone of pure sonic power. He aimed it to take in both of those still standing, trying to keep the fallen one from completely regenerating, and to damage the healthier one.

They turn instead their gaze to the remaining fiend, and begin to channel their power throughout their body. Magnus watched with interest as his sonic blast took down the last of the gelugons. He stepped out of cover and walked towards them cautiously, looking around all the time to see if anything else had noticed the noise of battle. Nothing seemed to at first glance, but he kept his eyes peeled anyway. He approached the bodies of the gelugons, and started to search them, using a stick to touch them to make sure that if they had any sort of disease or supernatural curse passed on by touch, that it wouldn't affect him. He called upon his own supernatural mindsight ability to check for living minds as he worked, to ensure they wouldn't be jumped. He took his time with the search, making sure he missed nothing.

Her survey done, Liriel leaves her hiding place, her cloak drifting behind her as she floats to the ground. Her eyes drift over the mutilated remains of the knights, and her face looks sorrowful, and her voice soft, almost inaudible, and ineffably sad.
"So much death, and it's only beginning. The initial rush was barely beaten back, and this gate was supposed to have been sealed. The price for this "victory" is far, far too high. I just hope that the relics are worth it."
She looks over her allies one last time, looking grimly determined as she does, before she starts towards the tower. A few moments later, she speaks again, her words grimly determined.
"Let's get this done. Their deaths shouldn't be in vain. We can talk inside."
Her boots squealch as the moves across the blood and gore covered glass, leaving a trail of bloody prints behind her.

Rasa

The burst of glass shards had torn through the boiling cloud of shadow and flame that formed the body of the demon, scattering the darkness with an accompanying wail of shattered dreams that faded into silence even as the form itself flickered and then vanished. In its place, drifting slowly down with their gleaming shield rotating watchfully around them, comes Rasa. Their spear is held again with almost casual indifference, iron-nailed fingers loose around the long shaft.

Looking around at the chaos that surrounds them, Rasa sighs softly. "It is sad, truly, that the gifts of the earth mother cannot restore those who have fallen. Still," they look to their wounded allies, seeing the savage wounds already closing and smiling a small quiet smile, "at least you are all safe and will be well in moments. I am so pleased." Drifting to just over the surface of the ground, they extend their senses out to the surrounds, looking for movement or potential threats.

After the echoes of the exploding fiend faded away the courtyard was quiet. Some of the glass shifted as it settled to the ground and a final moan escaped a knight as life left him. The shattered remains of the fiends hid nothing; they left everything that was inside now exposed and scattered. Poking through the remains, Magnus found a crystallized heart that still slowly weeped blood, the tiny drops hissing and evaporating before they reach the ground.

While keeping a watch for other fiends that might be nearby, a shift in the light from the prismatic star catches Liriel's eye. The change is almost imperceptible but Liriel gets the feeling that the star is watching them somehow. As she gives it a second look she can feel the focus of the star invisibly change to her instead of her companions. As she watches it, she can feel it watch her in return.

Approaching the Citadel there is no obvious entrance; no archways, doors, or windows, just solid basalt that glistens with a silver sheen. The glassflow on the eastern side could serve as a steep ramp of sorts, though the constant light from the star playing over the slowly retreating glassflow makes it safety as a passage questionable.

The Citadel is not really a building; it is a single living creature in the shape of a keep, or perhaps its a keep that was given sentience. Stories of the place tell both tales but the result is the same: an unyielding sentinel born of weird magic, bred or created to ward the Archmages terrible secrets.

Her bloody footprints slowly fading as she moves past the glassy gore, Liriel spots the shifting star observing them, and she looks back at it, sensing it watching.
A guardian spirit? Or perhaps a key to a door? But the scribe didn't give a passphrase, so just asking? No one else seems to have noticed, and this was a fort made by wizards, so asking is a reasonable first step.
She takes a deep breath, before she speaks, pitching her voice to carry to the star.
"We've been asked to retrieve the High Mage's relics, in hopes of stopping the fiends when they attack again. Will you permit us entry?"

Magnus took the heart and placed it inside his bag of holding, being careful to touch it as little as possible. He then rose and went to study the Citadel. He knew enough of magic to know what it was, and he found it intensely interesting. He examined it at some length, looking for signs of its mood, as well as signs of an entrance into the Citadel. After a brief examination, he noted the glass ramp, and wondered if that might lead to the interior. He called upon his supernatural elemental powers and rose off the ground. He floated in the direction of the ramp, then attempted to rise along the ramp, not touching it, but staying a foot above the ground on his way up the ramp. He kept alert for signs of more danger, whether a demonic or infernal danger, or that provided by the Citadel itself.
