For starters, it's been a long time since I've been here, or playing D&D at all. It's good to be back for a moment.

Secondly, I'd like to ask all of you some advice. As of right now, there are two rulesets for Mass Combat in 5e: When Armies Clash (2015) and Mass Combat (2017). I would like to use one of these two rulesets in a game I'm planning to run, but I'm not sure which. Can anyone (preferably with experience) give me the pros and cons of both systems, and perhaps even a recommendation? Any feedback is welcome, the more detailed the better.

Difficult. Like asking which lunatic should run the asylum.

Seriously, they're both fairly awful. I would strongly recommend against using either.

Would you say there's a better ruleset for mass combat then?

Agreed, both are pretty lacklustre

If you can dig up the AD&D mass combat rules i’ve been told those are decent.
Theres also the option of adapting the PF mass combat rules

Or just make a DM call on how things go down and narrate it as the PCs do their thing.
