My group entered an arena competition to make some side money and for one of the fights I'd like them to have a balloon fight of sorts. The idea is to have racks with thousands of unlabeled potions which they would hurl back and forth with their opponents with randomly rolled effects.

Should I just use the standard potion table and add another table with random damaging spell effects and have them activate if they hit the targeted square or is there some better way to handle it?

Is there anything that could cause problems that anyone sees off the top of their head?

I realize some effects have to be altered to effect the target by contact and not ingestion, I'll probably nix anything aoe and keep it confined to one square, anything else?

I cannot in good conscience let this thread continue without mentioning:

Potion Miscibility Table (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20060401b).

Proceed.

There are rules for thrown splash weapons in the PHB. I would use those and just have everyone next to them take one damage.

Either that or make the potions ranged touch attacks with an increment of 10', then allow a save if it hits (even better if you don't tell them what it is before making them decide if they want to save or not)

Ooh I forgot about this and it'll be easy to include. Good call.
