Hello everyone.
I'm glad to announce that the OOTSpedia project has been launched.
Its purpose is to help all OOTS readers who have trouble with understanding
jokes (d&d based ones and others).
As for now the idea of the encyclopedia structure is the following:
Anyone can add\submit correction for a certain entry. Then after
moderators' check it would appear on the respective comic page.
I can envision that someone will say that jokes are not funny when they
are explained. I tend to agree but note that an unclear joke is even less
funny. People want to learn about something they don't know just to catch
more humour, to improve their entertaining experience. The proof is the
existance of the 'Jokes You Didn't Get' thread. (I think we'll arrange the
information they gathered and place it on our encyclopedia. With the permission of the thread users, of course.)
Someone said that only Rich gets 100% jokes from the comic. There are jokes
that seem witty only to people with special knowledge or experience (like Final Fantasy).
Also readers miss some elusive references and sometimes even misunderstand jokes!
Furthermore, people whose native language is not English (I belong to them)
will find the OOTSpedia project rather useful, for as I can judge by
'Jokes You Didn't Get' and other threads (mainly discussion ones) many
question are asked just by such readers.
Another possible objection to the project role as a possible information source
is that despite being open (like Wikipedia) it'll lack original information.
I can say that 60 - 75% percent of jokes were explained on this forum.
OOTSpedia projects will arrange the material that is scattered all over the
forum and search for something definite requires time and patience.
On the contrary, OOTSpedia project pages will be well-arranged, the information
on them processed and spoiler-free. It's convinient to have all needed material
in one place, isn't it?
Finally, the OOTS is being translated (officially and unoficially) and OOTSpedia will
help those who don't want to have the excellent humour be lost in translation.
OOTSpedia is not a commercial project and is absolutely free.
For present day I can only demostrate you an OOTSpedia page (the way every page will
be designed). It's still a draft and contains only brief information,
but the work is in progress :).
