I was thinking of rolling a summoner that specializes in non-combat scenarios. Who basically uses his summons for their utility abilities.

1) Are their any summoner's guides that organize creatures by their utility?

2) How does advanced summoning even work? By which I mean the list in the PH only covers the creatures in the MM1. There are 4 other MM's and a plethora of other sources for monsters. How do you know what you can even summon anymore?

Are all of the additional summonable monsters from WotC. Cause I doubt my group would allow it if it's not a WotC approved list of summons.

Either I'm being unclear or I just haven't got the answer I need yet.

The guides are great, and needed, but I have yet to see something from WotC that says, "here's the updated listed for summon monster/nature's ally". Maybe I'm missing something, but if it's not coming from WotC how are people determining which spells can summon which monsters?

The monsters themselves tell you that they're summonable by the spells in question.
