Is it just me or does assassinate and the ability to effectively be invisible to creatures with dark vision mesh together perfectly?

Just like any capacity to get Invisible?

Being invisible in deep darkness just means you'll surprise creatures with dark vision a bit more and get advantage, it's not a panacea.

Well... Yeah.

- WIS to initiative (assassins can't get enough of it)
- An extra attack on the first round that will crit, and with an extra 2d8 to go with it
- An improved darkvision
- Effective invisibility in the dark

Yeah thinking Wood elf with point buy stats: 8/17/14/10/16/8, 5 levels straight gloam followed by rest assassin. Elven accuracy, alert, sharpshooter, skulker and +2 DEX in that order. Might even keep DEX at 18 with archery style and triple advantage and replace with mobile or smthn or maybe swap sharpshooter for crossbow expert since assassin is about doubling dice?

Creatures with darkvision are incredibly hard to surprise without cover, and not exactly uncommon.

As Xanathar put it: "We all see you. Tiptoeing doesn't turn you invisible." :smallamused:

Find some way to get Control Flames so you can extinguish light sources from 60 ft.

You're a more effective assassin if you go Gloomstalker/Fighter honestly

How can you be an assassin without levels in assassin? xD

How can you be an assassin without levels in assassin? xDby smoking a lot of hashish.

Or by just sneaking up on things and murdering things.

Of course, what makes an assassin a 'classic' assassin are their disguise abilities, not just the knife in the dark.

Edit: lol suddenly popped into my mind for a fun build for this idea: a Gnome that disguises itself as kobolds and goes underground to assassinate them. :smallbiggrin: or Halfling that goes after goblins.

Alright so I ran some numbers.

A bugbear At level 14, with 3 levels in gloomstalker and 11 levels in fighter, I think you have the highest possible first round nova.

Note the phrasing of the dread ambusher ability: whenever you take the attack action during your first turn of combat. This means if you use the attack action twice, it allows you to:
Attack 1
Attack (dread ambusher 1)
Attack 2
Attack 3
Action surge
Attack 4
Attack (dread ambusher 2)
Attack 5
Attack 6

Giving us 8 attacks, two of which are empowered. You should expect to surprise your enemies as an assassin- and given that you roll initiative at advantage if you're using the revised ranger, and get to add both your wis and dex to it, you are very likely to get another 3 attacks. All of them at advantage because your target hasn't acted yet. You should be able to, with some luck, kill anything below a CR20 within the first round, or at least wound it so severely that your team can easily finish it off.

Fighter 11 / Ranger 3 / Rogue 6

* 5 ASIs
* 3 Attacks
* 1 Extra Attack on the First Round
* Action Surge
* 5d10 Maneuver Dice
* 3d6 Sneak Attack
* 1d6 Hunter's Mark
* Assassinate

If you land Assassinate good luck getting higher single-target nova than this guy. Even if you don't land Assassinate and your Maneuvers are over, this still packs some amazing consistent punch.

Limits you to dex based weapons.

Pesonaly i think Gloomstalker also fits with Shadow monk pretty well. Dont ask why it just feels that way. As far as i know nothing mechanical is effecting each other but it feels nice.

Gloomstalker 4/Shadow Monk 6/Assassin 8/Warlock(any) 2

a build i would love to play if it wasn't so mad.

Wait... shadow monk has class features? :smallconfused:

I'd always go for the fifth ranger level unless you're grabbing Cantrips like Greenflam Blade.

Yeah sadly trying to finagle everything together is hard. Espescially since you want Dex and wis maxed so that’s 4 ASIs you want to get. Oh and I definetly would grab GFB or BB and not even use EB. Pick up the silent image or disguise self invocations and devil sight.
