Help with RAS

Hello everyone, I need help with something.
I'm making my first Illusionist character and I'm reading about this Chain of Disbelief variant, which states that I'll permanently lose the ability to obtain a Familiar. Can I still take this even if I'm not actually able to have a Familiar on my own, thus making it impossible to get one later on? Or rather, do I need to have the "Familiar" trait?

Yes, you still have to have some means of obtaining a familiar (and, in the case of substitution levels, the familiar ability has to come from the class the substitution level is based off of).

Agreed. When looking at ACFs, racial sub levels, and the like, the general rule to follow is that you can't trade what you don't have.
