Here's one of the fears from my childhood, Bloody Mary.

A wonderful plot hook that was suggested to me during development: Our heroes are set to investigate a murder. The man's house has all the mirrors covered and shattered. There are numerous signs that this man is quite afraid of something, and his only companionship for weeks had been his cat. The man lies stabbed to death next to a pool of water spilled from a goblet.
If you have any other childhood monsters or other folklore-ish suggestions, I'd enjoy learning about them. If you give it a stat block, it can be killed.
