Would anyone be so kind as to explain the LA buy back?

Certainly.

1. You start off with the normal, full LA and racial hit dice. If you need to know how that works too, just ask again.

2. Once you have enough experience points to gain class levels beyond your ECL, you can start looking at how soon you can buy off the LA. Here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm) is the SRD entry on it.

3. If your LA is 1, for instance, and you have no racial hit dice, you need to gain three class levels, which would require getting enough experience for a normal character to reach 4th level. You then take your current ECL, and subtract one, then multiply by 1000.

4. This is 3,000 xp. Note that while this is subtracted off of your total, you are no longer a level behind. You should be at exactly enough experience to gain third level, plus any that you gained beyond what was needed for fourth.

5. With no LA, you now progress as a normal character.

For higher values of LA, it gets a bit more complicated, but them's the breaks.

You can find the rules here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm).

Basically, at certain levels, you save up experience points. Instead of trading them in for a new shiny level, you take one off of that pesky level adjustment. What level you do so at, how much it costs, and how often you can do so depends on your LA.

EDIT: Blast you, Zinc Ninja!

Reducing Level Adjustment (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm)

Basically, at a certain level you can remove 1 LA by spending an amount of XP instead of levelling up. The level required and the amount of XP spent depends on how much LA you have.
