I think 202 is the funniest, especially the last panel.
:belkar: "Stop oppressing my culture you ethnocentric bitch!".

But 298 is a great plot strip. I also like Thog and Nale's exchange.
:thog: "soon?"
:nale: "Very soon."

I'm going to have to go for 298 because it has lots of plot and a few jokes. And Celia shopping (it's the proof that V is female! No man could stand it!)

Best competetition in a while. Will it be the birth of the best running joke in 202, or the sheer intelligence and wit of 226, or the superb dialogue of 270, or the awesome dramatic summary and outlook of 298?

I vote for intelligence and wit: 226!

This is a tough one... I think that if Roy's sword had ended up being a crucial factor in the battle against Xykon, I would have chosen 298. But it didn't and some of the drama feels a little misplaced. I don't like 226, as it is to... I don't know, it just feels below the standards of this great comic.

This leaves to great Belkar strips. And for the sheer amount of punishment dished out to the now thankfully dead paladdin Miko, I wote 270.

EDIT: Just to further speak for my case, I like the strip as it finally shows SOMEONE is able to fight against the railroad plot OOTS had unwillingly moved onto and were to travel along for a looooong time...

See, the thing is, 202 is an "ehh" strip with an awesome punchline, but 226 has me rolling on the floor all the way through, also with an awesome punchline. 270 is not only hilarious, it advances the plot and has some nice action in it. 298 humorously ties everything up by featuring all of our main characters and prepares for the next arc.

Geez, can I vote later?

Okay, I've decided on 226 - it's just classic.

I am going to make a desperate plea to influence votes and ask everyone voting #226 to reconsider.

The problem is not the quality of the strip - it is indeed most excellent. The problem is that excellence comes from Mssrs Abbot and Costello, rather than the OOTS themselves. This is not necessarily a bad thing, unless you are voting for "the Best of OOTS" - which we are. Essentially, voting 226 tells the Giant the best he can do is rip off other people's work, and I don't believe that is the message we want to send.

As for my own vote, I think 270 is probably my favoure of the final four, but I will vote tactically for 202 in a last-ditch effort to derail 226!

#298
Not as funny, but two are gags that are one off, Match throwing and "Who's on First" and while the lead sheet is a good repeat joke, it still isn't as far-reaching as 298. That sets up for things that still aren't resolved. Durkon still not knowing if he can return home or not thanks to Miko dying and losing the letter etc.

Surfing HalfOrc

270. Belkar is just too funny when he kicks the snot out of Miko!

That said, half a vote each for 270 and 298. If I can't, then 270.

270, for it really shows Belkar's cold, calculating side, as well as clearly defines that he's not stupid, just unwise.

Im going to have to go with 202 here. Funny and Plot moving. The whos on first strip was a great homage. The dueling one was funny too. And the montage was good but Im still picking 202 as my favorite.

Definitely voting for 270... 202 and 226 are brilliant gag strips, but 270's the best page in my book.

P.S. Pun most definitely intended.

Chronos

I am going to make a desperate plea to influence votes and ask everyone voting #226 to reconsider.I agree. Not only are Abbot and Costello the source of the humor, but that sort of thing gets less funny if it's over-used. And Rich had already done a "who's on first" gag with "Up a level, down a level".

202 is pretty good, and it's not entirely a one-joke comic, either. I for one found the graphical representation of Detect Evil to be a good sight gag.

Still, I'm going to vote for 270: It's a great battle, fought in distinctively Belkar-ish style. From the striking from ambush, to the goading about "honor", to the improvised trapmaking and the match, it's a great illustration about how an effective character makes his own luck.

My vote:

#226

Nazzo, the 102nd
2007-08-23, 01:02 PM
Poll is closed.

Some notes:
1. I only considered votes that were inside the time window for the poll. Thus, Zicmu's and Mojique's votes, both for #226, were not counted.
2. I discarded Xaydx's vote. It was for 286, and since the 8 is nowhere near the 2 in the keyboard, I'm not assuming it was a typo for 226, unless he pronounces it to be so.

So, with these rules, you can see the #202 has won by one vote. But if we consider the two latest votes, and Xaydx, #226 turns the tables.

That said, I ask to you guys: do you think it's fair if we do a runoff poll? It is way too tight...

Being a fan of 226, I'm in favor of a runoff or counting the 3 disputed votes.

KSA
2007-08-23, 09:24 PM
You can't really count votes that weren't submitted according to the rules, so it needs to be either a run-off or finished as is. I would say make 202 the winner because it did win according to the rules of the competition. Because of several disputed votes that would tip the balance the other way, a run-off would be acceptable, but that would set a precedent for tampering with the rules. Admittedly, this is meant to pick the genuine best strip, so tweaking rules to do that isn't a big deal.

mockingbyrd7
2007-08-23, 10:14 PM
While technically they posted after 6:33 A.M., the poll hadn't officially been closed by you, so I could go either way. Actually, though, 202 was my least favorite of the four, and 226 was my favorite, so I would like to see a runoff.

(202 was my least favorite because it was a boring strip with a great punchline, while 226 was hilarious all the way through, 270 had action, great dialogue, AND a great punchline, and 298 was plot-arrific and had a really cool format.)

Nazzo, the 102nd
2007-08-23, 11:25 PM
Admittedly, this is meant to pick the genuine best strip, so tweaking rules to do that isn't a big deal.

That is... a very good point. Thanks, KSA.

Well, then I think a run-off will be the right way to go. I shall do this in another thread.

The other run-off in this format was like a lightning poll, during just 1 day. But since this is the most important poll of the whole season, I think it's fair to do it in another 3 days...

Okay. Tomorrow I'll post it, and let the head-to-head battle begin.

... or... more like, strip-to-strip. Whatever.
