So I'm going to be a conquest paladin for a game or Tomb of Annihilation but I can't decide on a race.

Some things to know
1. VHuman isn't allowed
2. Everyone starts with a free feat (I'm taking magic initiate to get "cause fear")
3. I'm going Great Weapon Fighting with a greataxe

Thanks for the help.

Half Orc or Dragonborn would do well.

Go Dragonborn. Magic Initiate is fine, but you could also pick up the Dragonborn racial feat from XgtE that lets you use your breathe weapon to instead cause a fear effect.

Class was made for hobgoblin.

Half Elf, you get to add two to your charisma, and one each to strength and con, and you still get access to the human feat prodigy (to give you expertise in intimidation, so you can translate your combat style into the social arena).

just my 2 cents

Normal human or Dwarf could be fun.

Dragonborn (with the XGtE feat for the fear), Half-elf for that Cha bonus and skills bonuses, or Fallen Aasimar all have pretty good synergy. For flavor, Half orc, hobgoblin, or a dwarf would also rock.

Fallen Aasimar

I vote for this... it looks VERY effective after level 7.

Winged Levistus or Winged Zariel Tiefling. Cultist of Glasya too to give you additional resilience.

If you have a Steed that is intelligent enough to be a member of the Cult too, cultist of fierna has free advantage on all saves and lets you keep it around longer.

Winged Tiefling?

What UA is this from?

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, so not an UA.

Levistus and others are from the fairly recent UA, though

Dragonborn, Half-Elf, Tiefling.. Aasimar (especially Fallen), will work well.

If the DM allows the D&D Beyond racial feats for the Volo's races, the Aasimar could get Advantage on saving throws vs magical effects.

To echo others, with that free feat I'd go Dragonborn and take Dragon Fear. With the Oath of Conquest, your utility rests in your ability to frighten enemies. That means you need to max out CHA as soon as possible for a high spell save DC. With this combo, you'll have 18 STR and 18 CHA at level 4. Since you're making a two-handed build I expect you're focusing more on damage. This gets you a great stat line and an extra tool for inflicting fear. If you're trying to optimize the Oath of Conquest, and you get a feat at level 1, I really think Dragonborn is the best you can get.

If you're committed to taking Magic Initiate, I'd go Half-Elf. +2 to CHA, then take +1 to STR and +1 to CON will still give you a pretty good stat line. I like Magic Initiate, and Cause Fear is pretty good, but you already have Wrathful Smite for single-target fear. It's a neat tool to have, but not necessary. The real utility is in the cantrips. If you're committed to taking Magic Initiate, make sure you choose warlock and pick up Booming Blade and Eldritch Blast.

If you don't want to go Half-Elf, your next best race is going to be Fallen Aasimar. Similar stats, but you also get a pretty good AoE frighten ability every long rest.

Shameless self-plug, but I wrote a guide on the Oath of Conquest if you're interested in a more in-depth analysis of the subclass:

I've read this guide, and would recommend it highly. Very well thought out and helpful.

I currently play a fallen aasimar conquest paladin and damn if it isn’t fun. Pretty much all of the aasimar racial abilities that unlock at level 3 are good for conquest paladin.

I'd either do the fallen aasimar or would tiefling work? I have a Fallen aasimer shadow magic sorcerer thats pretty good, I like the race in general.

Dragonborn w/ the Dragon Fear feat.

It's MADE for Conquest Paladin!

Your CD can induce fear, you have this also keying off Charisma to cause fear, so that's two ways to generate Fear every short rest. That's key. And you get the Fear spell at lv9.

Will everyone hate me if I say "go Tiefling->Hexblade->HellknightConquest Paladin"

I still believe it to be the best option, and to have a lot of RP behind it. At your option, start as a Chromatic Dragon Sorcerer Devoted to Tiamat. :3

Anyone remember those? That's what you could be looking like (or decented from) roughly with this multiclass :3

Why do you think that's the best option? I know that multiclassing into Hexblade is great, but the pure Oath of Conquest is strong enough on its own two legs. And he also is looking to use a two-handed weapon, and you need at least 3 levels in Hexblade before you can apply Hex Warrior to two-handed weapons.

I'm currently playing a Tiefling paladin (Oath of Conquest 8 / Hexblade 1) and he's a great character, both mechanically and from a roleplaying standpoint. He's might be my favorite character that I've ever made. But he's definitely not optimized. If you take into account that OP (a) wants to fight with a two-handed weapon, and (b) starts the game with a free feat, then Tiefling just doesn't compare to Dragonborn, Half-Elf, or Aasimar. And the Oath of Conquest is versatile enough that those races all have great and fun story potential.
