View Full Version : Magical items from Wizards still in tech school

Another thread got me thinking.

Its possible to on discount get your car fixed by a tech school training mechanics, get your hair done by a person in beauty school or even go to a teaching hospital where they try to train the next generation of doctors.

So perhaps Wizards in training or young magic users are trying to create magical items and it doesn't quite work out right.

Things like:

Amulet of natural dexterity - grants advantage to dex skill checks and saving throws if the wearer is in an "all natural state" aka carrying or wearing nothing manufactured beyond a loincloth.

Or

Crown of annoying insight - grants a +2 to Intelligence but makes the added intelligence feeds your narcisism so all listening to you must make a Constitution saving throw or be compelled to use their movement to get away from the sound of your voice.

(Oops, the second may have a few uses in combat lol)

Ring of Feather Fail
This ring of Feather Fail only works on the ring itself & doesn't not extend its effects to the wearer.

Monks would love that. (Come to think of it, so would Wizards and Sorcerers. Use a "wand" (stick) as your arcane focus.)

Hey, why not druids? Their clothes may disappear in Wild Shape anyway. :p

I always loved the 'Ring of Almost Invisibility' from Planescape Torment. 'The wearer often gets really close to being invisible.'

(It did give +1 AC.)

The first has uses for a monk or barbarian actually, since they don't need to wear anything.

The Hat of Teleportation.

When the command word is spoken, the hat teleports. The wearer does not.

Invisible Boy from Mystery Men... The ring makes you invisible but only when no one is looking at you.

The Amulet of Teluma: While wearing this amulet, the character has a 50% chance while casting a spell or making a social check (Intimidate, Deception, Persuasion, or Performance) to reverse a key word. The exact impacts of this are up to the DM.

Sword of Darning: Upon uttering the command word, this sword will go about darning the socks of all of the members of the party. Everyone's feet are so comfortable that, if traveling, they can walk an extra mile the next day at any pace.

Potion of Animal Fiendship: If consumed by by a creature that is not a beast, this potion has no effect. If consumed by a creature with the beast type, the creature gains the fiend creature type, and becomes immune to fire and resistant to cold damage.

Immovable Rod: Meet Roderick, or "Rod" for short. He is completely unaffected by spells designed to change his emotional status.

Cloak of Elvenmean: While you wear this cloak with its hood up, Wisdom (Perception) checks made to see you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, as the cloak's color shifts to camouflage you. Pulling the hood up or down requires an action. Also, when the hood is up, you are constantly berated and insulted in elvish.

Robe of Somewhat Useful Items: This robe is covered in pouches with no labels on them. When a pouch is removed and a command word is spoken, the patch transforms into an item that would have been really useful during the party's last puzzle or challenge, but not necessarily useful for the current task at hand.

This would make you millions of gold. Have you look at the prices of cheap socks these days? The cost of a good pair of comfortable socks that the sword will make on it's own would be amazing?

I had a magic item shop once sell ‘discount x-ray goggles’ because the owner couldn’t get the ‘recipie’ right. He had ones that made you blind (because you could see through everything); invisible goggles (because you could see through them); ones that effected only clothes; etc. You had to buy them out of a bin without testing them first

Instrument of Silence: Casts silence, targeted on itself, when played.

Forum's already full of these, no thanks.

Instrument of the bards. A hand harp whose frame is made of the bones of former bards.

Pipes of the sewer, literally an iron pipe that cane from a sewer, no matter how many times you wash it it still smells.

Right hand of vecna. The hand off vecnas second in command. It looks perfectly preserved, but does little else.

I kind of like this bones of the bard lol. I imaging it plays beautifully but everyone is just a little put off by it.

Periapt of Infinite Breath. While wearing it, you are always aware that you are breathing right now.

Sure this may be a broken magical item, but you can image incapacitating someone and placing this item on them to extract information?

From the same source, Scroll of Icarian Flight: Instead of flying, you can travel over whole countries in a single leap. Ability to change directions mid-air or to land safely not included.

Portable Whole - This fine black cloth, soft as silk, is folded up to the dimensions of a handkerchief. It unfolds into a circular sheet 3 feet in diameter. Placing objects in the cloth, or wrapping an object in the cloth makes those objects lose their broken condition.

Sword of Light Stealing - When you attack a creature with this magic weapon and roll a 15-20 on the attack roll, magical darkness infuses the creature’s sight. The creature counts the light level as darkness for 1 round, regardless of the actual light level.

Restorative Oinkment - As an action, one dose of the ointment can be swallowed or applied to the skin of a pig, boar, babirusa, or hog. The creature that receives it regains 2d8 + 2 hit points, ceases to be Poisoned, and is cured of any disease.

Ring of Tactile Telekinesis - While wearing this ring, you can cast the Telekinesis spell at will, but you can target only objects that you're wearing or carrying. The spell ends when you are no longer holding the target.

Mug of Transmutation. When you pour an alcoholic beverage into it, it becomes stale and warm instantly. Unless you use it for torture, pranking, or a similar activity, in which case it breaks instead.

Amulet of Proof Against Detention: This amulet, when shown to a teacher or headmaster, allows the user to get out of detention.

Elixir of Fire Breathe: This elixir allows the user to breathe fire instead of air. It can be useful in traversing the Plane of Fire?

Cape of the Mountain Bank: It is a formal cape worn by the dwarven employees of a bank in the mountains. It has no magical abilities, but it gives off a trustful vibe to its wearer.

Winged Heels. They're fashionable high heeled shoes for women, with wings. That's about it.

Clearly, you don't know fashion.

Coalhands are the men's version. They are incredibly comfortable and beautiful, but putting them on or taking them off puts soot all over your hands and spreads to all your clothes/face/armor etc.

The Scissors of Running

These can be wielded like a normal dagger.

When held in the hand the Scissors of Running grant a bonus action dash and...
... if a character holding them moves more than 5' in a round then the character must make a DC 12 Wisdom save. If they fail they must take the bonus action dash and move their full movement and the bonus dash (they may not retrace their steps if other routes are available to them). They must also pass a DC12 Athletics or Acrobatics check; on failure they fall on the scissors, they fall prone, their move for the turn goes to zero and they take 1d4 piercing damage. The DM determines how far they get before they fall (or specifies a procedure for rolling this).

Edit: I posted and then realised what I was missing: When the character falls on the scissors they must make a DC12 Constitution save. If they fail they lose an eye.
