In this thread, I found a stratagem involving your familiar, a metal box and the spell dragons breath. So I decided to expand on this concept a bit. I ended up with the idea to create a battle bot/mini tank inspired by what I was watching at the time. Heres to all you artificers out there!
Tools you'll need:
1. metal box 5. chain
2. 4 wheels 6. a couple gears
3. tinkers tools 7.pixie friend.
4. eyeglass frame
What you need to do:
1. Buy the materials and get some custom made
2. Cut a hole in the metal box to let your pixie friend in.
3. Use tinkers tools to create a lever system to raise or drop the eyeglass to block the hole(free action)
4. Cut holes in the bottom of the box
5. use tinkers tools to create a system to propel the vehicle like a bicycle with supporting wheels on the side.
6. cast dragons breath on your pixie and you got a battle bot.
Battle strategy:
Round 1(caster): cast dragons breath on pixie-> does normal action
Round 1(familiar): petal movement to the enemy and aims face(movement)->pulls a lever(free action)->Breath attack(bonus action)->drops lever(part of free action)->rolls away and laughs maniacally-> or use its remaining action to do what you want like drop caltrops, ball bearings, oil or cast magic missile from a wand since it is a spellcasting, not an attack action and it doesn't need attunement.
Note: Full cover means that if someone fireballs the vehicle your familiar will be alright. If your battlebot gets compromised you can always shunt it to your pocket dimension and resummon it next round with the spell active(hopefully).
Now you may be skeptical about the use of tinkering tools in this way.
Here are my arguments:
1. The description for tinkers tools does not set limits on what you can create.
2. Unlike the gnomish artificing, these are not automated and are used manually by a creature.
3. Creating a bicycle and using a chain to raise something is a very simple concept. Take a drawbridge for instance.
Counter-argument to cries of overpowered:
Well, you may be saying to yourself "Damn an untargetable familiar with a breath weapon is overpowered." Here is my rebuttal. DMG pg. 246 Details the stats for objects including hp and ac. Here is a website that will give you detailed rules on that matter. The battle bot can be targeted and destroyed by your opponents. At least this adds a use for that mending spell sitting in your back pocket.

This strategy opens up fun strategies for people to create their own unique battle bots. I challenge you to create your own battlebot and share them with us. :smallcool:

One thing which I forgot to cover is that familiars can attune to magic items as long as it does not specify a class restriction. The familiar's attunement slots do not overlap with the casters;however, if you play in adventurers league there is a restriction of "A NPC under your control (such as, but not limited to, familiars, beast companions, simulacrums, conjured creatures, hirelings, lickspittles, etc.) counts against both the controlling character’s limit of three attuned items and the character’s permanent magic item count"[DDAL FAQ v6.0, p.9].
