Can I use catapult on something I have placed on the palm of my hand? Or do I have to drop it in order for it to qualify as not being held?

Pretty sure 'having something in your hand' meets the definition of 'carrying it'. Dropping something doesn't cost an action, so it's usually not going to be a problem, right?

Usually, but if you were on a ledge or something where foot space is limited. You would want to avoid dropping the item. Unless I could throw it in the air then cast catapult on it then...

Is that really an issue when casting the spell? Even if it is, does it come up often enough to warrant concern?
