Favored Character Range Voting Poll

Ever since we finished the favorite character tournament and round robin, I've been thinking about different ways to collect, collate, and combine a fandom's sentiment about a whole slate of characters.

Not to say that Present 2.0's method is bad: summing up a score based on top ten lists is one of the most common ways to do favorites lists for a good reason: it prioritizes those that the fans have the strongest positive feelings about, and that's a cool thing.

But when we were doing the Wildcard blocks I saw how different and interesting it was to use a style of voting that captures how everybody voting feels about every character. For those who weren't there at the time: we did a system where you could vote on every character in the block giving them a number that we decided to call "nods". There were just three options: Zero nods meant you had no noteworthy positive feelings, 1 meant that you did, 2 nods meant you had strong positive feelings for the character.

I thought it would be interesting to do something like that, but with the FULL slate of OOTS characters. But after the tournaments, it seemed we might be burned out on such things--I certainly was. But recently new posters have been discovering the OG Popularity Poll for the first time, and it reminded me of my idea for an alternative type of poll.

For a larger range of characters, I believe that a slightly larger range of voting options would be good: one more integer in each direction. So there would be 5 options from -1 to 3.

-1 A Hate Significant Negative Evaluation "This character actively hampers my enjoyment of the the comic."
0 or blank No Nods No Significant Evaluation "I don't feel much of anything about this character one way or another."
1 A Nod Significant Positive Evaluation "I enjoy this character."
2 Double Nod Strong Positive Evaluation "I enjoy this character a lot!" 3 Triple Nod Exceptional Positive Evaluation "This is one of my favorite characters of all time!"


So the idea is, I would post a ballot which would include every significant character. I decided to define "significant" as any character with over 10 appearances based on the appearance-counting thread, with a few exclusions, plus any character who was ever on a ballot in this poll.

(The exclusions are most of the steeds, the spiky summon, and the three soul grafts. Haerta was the most interesting of the three, but she didn't meet the cutoff for appearances because she was strongest and escaped first, so I decided to exclude all three.)

Then to vote you would hit "quote" on this post to get the ballot below formatted as a table, put your nods in the first gap between and and any commentary on your reasoning in the second gap, then you can post a fully formatted ballot. If fiddling with code sounds like too much work you can copy and paste the ballot into your post without quoting first, then you would have the full ballot without the table code. Either way is fine.

I thought about having a nomination period before starting voting to make sure the ballot was inclusive of everybody's favorites, but I figure that's overkill, if somebody never made a single top-10 in all this time. But if I am wrong and I have excluded somebody you really feel belongs on this ballot, let me know right away.

Maybe a version with icons but without hyperlinks would be a good idea?

I hear where you're coming from, the smileys definitely help place the more obscure characters. But only the major characters have short codes for smilies, the others have long urls in coding, which would be just as unwieldy for somebody trying to fill out the ballot.

On that subject, I feel like the definition for -1 is a little weird.

I don't consider the characters that I gave a -1 poorly written, or think the comic would be better without them. They don't necesarilly hamper my enjoyment of the comic. I just don't like them, and don't want them to win the poll.

I'd have to consider that a philosophical disagreement then: when I ask which characters people like and dislike, I mean as fictional characters, so if a villain is hatable, or a hero is flawed, those are generally good things!

I'd have to consider that a philosophical disagreement then: when I ask which characters people like and dislike, I mean as fictional characters, so if a villain is hatable, or a hero is flawed, those are generally good things!

Your ballot is your ballot and you can interpret it as you choose, but that is my intent.

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but (firstly) the main thing I find fun about these polls is rooting for you favourite characters and hoping they get scored highly, and even if I think Nale has a good, consistent characterization, and fits into the story well, that doesn't mean that rooting for him would be very fun. A hateable character is well written when he is easy to hate, but rooting for people you hate isn't as fun (for me at least). Secondly, Order of the Stick is an amazing, well written story, so if the only thing to take into consideration were "is this character well written" I would have to give every character (except mabye Andi, Bandana, and the Frost Giantess) good scores :)

Also, thanks for running this vote. It will be fun to watch, and range voting is my favourite system :)

Nah, that's fine. I see where you're coming from. From my point of view, I can love a book and still feel that some characters are less interesting, or annoying to an extent that isn't justified by the fact I'm supposed to dislike em. But I can totally see the point of view of "It's a good story and all the characters play their intended role in that."

I'm surprised there's been no hate for Nale (nor Vaarsuvius) yet!While both Nale and V have done things that made some people dislike them, neither of them are poorly written. If I were going by how much I wanted a character to lose, I would have given Nale a -1. But he's well-written so he got a 1 instead. Same with Thog, I think he's a bit overrated and I don't want to see him in top 10 or even top 15, but I can't really downvote him just for that (he got a 1, too).


ETA: Is strategic vote changing approved of? :)He's my 2 cent: I don't think strategic voting fits this poll. Actually, I think it would ruin it. For instance, I like Thog as a character, but I don't want him to win, so I'd give him a -1. I also like all of the main cast, although I like some more than others, so if, say, Haley were doing well and might beat V, I would give Haley a -1. This is pretty terrible and ruins the system. One could make a case that the ballot should be hidden and revealed once the poll is done, although that would be hard to do on a forum. It would be better if we all just gave people the score we think they deserve, based on the criteria the OP posted (dislike, neutral, like, really like, really like, basically).

I don't consider the characters that I gave a -1 poorly written, or think the comic would be better without them. They don't necesarilly hamper my enjoyment of the comic. I just don't like them, and don't want them to win the poll.I think the definition makes a lot of sense. Perhaps you should "metagame" a bit less and just give characters the score you think they deserve. It's not a competition or a tournament, it's a poll. If you don't think the comic would be better without any character, then don't give any character -1. That's what I did (the lowest I gave any character was -1 since I, personally, am not bothered enough by any character in the poll to say that the comic would be better off without them).

Let's be real: I doubt many people actually liked Kubota as a person. He was a scumbag and a traitor, after all. But he added some interesting story elements, and he was fairly well-written, so people might still give him a nod or two. Perhaps some people found him a bit cliché and thought he was poorly written and one-dimensional, and thus gave him a -1. That's fine. Perhaps some people thought he was just okay and gave him a 0. That's also fine.

Even if we assume good intentions, I think it's not trivial to distinguish between a character who detracts from one's enjoyment, and one that is annoying but still a good character.
