View Full Version : 5d6, throw out the lowest two...

I bought some six sided dice the other day at a thrift shop. Five of them for $3. They're big, chunky ones in bright colors. Sort of Playmobil style. Back in the days when we rolled dice for stats we always rolled 5d6 and tossed the lowest two. So being a good gamer the first thing I did was roll six D&D/PF stats. I got a 9, 14, 14, 15, 16, 17. A good set by any measure. Now I just need to build a character around them... So, what would you play with these rolls? Or roll your own and tell us what you picked.

Pretty much anything. Those are some pretty good rolls, and even MAD classes would do pretty decently with them.

Unless they're in order, in which case, a Sorcerer

LOL, I just did it and got 13, 13, 13, 11, 13, 14 (another Sorcerer).

In my home group we use either 1d8+10 or 2d4+10 depending on which of us is DMing. Needless to say, we don't worry too much about SAD/MAD.

Lessee...14, 11, 15, 10, 10, 15. Yuck. Looks like a mediocre caster.

Second roll...15, 15, 11, 11, 13, 11. I want your dice.

Ah well, why not. Rolling in order (unless thex suck, then a second one to pick^^): 18, 12, 12, 17, 15, 13.

Hmmm, looks like a Warblade to me. Or the physically strongest Wizard (Gish) ever ^^

Heavy armor = "what Dex?"

With an item of +2 Wisdom, you'll get your one spell per day at level 4.

Thanks, but I like initiative and reflex saves. :smalltongue: Paladin is one of those classes that needs an 18 and 4 16's to function properly.

12, 11, 16, 15, 16, 13.

There are a lot of options for those. Easy thought is swordsage, but for the low Dex (which I think I could work around). Crusader's an option. Druid's a really good option, or Cleric.

Cleric or druid seems like a no-brainer here.

Hmm, Venerable Dragonwrought Kobold looks disturbingly good for this set of stats. 9 Str isn't that bad, and with Desert Kobold there's no Con penalty (it's a Wis penalty instead, which is more than offset by Venerable). 18 Dex, 17 Cha, 16 Int, 14 Wis, 12 Con... not too shabby.

Putting aside the thermonuclear lactose, I could make a decent Bard, an oddball Rogue, or a solid human Chameleon.

17 9 15 12 15 10

If it's in order, I'm thinking .... Psychic Warrior, maybe? Otherwise, 15 9 15 10 17 12 and Cleric.

4d6 drop lowest, reroll one and swap two. 13, 9, 14, 14, 15, 14 Spirit Shaman perhaps?

14, 14, 20, 13, 18, 17 One heckuva Cleric/face

I could make literally anything with this.

5d6 drop 2? Dice loved me today
18, 16, 12, 13, 16, 13.

In order, I'd play a Wildshape Ranger and, being my own DM right now, I'd allow myself to swap the limited WS and AC for the Druid's Shapeshifter ACF. Not because it's strong or anything, but because it's a fun approach to a Ranger (sorf of a different combat style, that also costs you the companion, but scales a bit more) and this one would have the stats to pull it off.

Not in order, pretty much anything, even the MADdies like Favored Soul, or even Paladin should be perfectly fine. I'd probably do a 13, 16, 13, 18, 12, 16 Beguiler.

4d8 drop 1: 16, 17, 15, 15, 18, 15. I hate too many odd rolls, but the numbers overall are lovely. In order, this screams Cleric to me. The Shapeshifter Ranger idea would work even better. So would anything else, since your lowest roll is effectively 14.

4d8 drop lowest...20, 15, 18, 22, 18, 19. Fine by me. I might be able to make a Monk (almost) work with rolls like that.

Anyone not using flat 5d4 likes balance.

Anyone not using flat 5d4 likes balance.

If you want balance and above average rolls, 3d6 +6 drop lowest d6 is the way to go.
It gives you the point-buy-ish 8-18 range, but with a higher chance of above average rolls thanks to 1 auto-maxed roll and best 2 of 3.

Pure balance, when it comes to ability points, comes from a pure point buy, of course.

hmm 11, 16, 14, 18, 15, 13.

well that fits ok for most of my standard builds. off to beguiler shadowcraft mage for me.

i like that 3D6+6 drop lowest. average would be 14 (since any single 1 is gone so 1-8 +2-8 average).

my group uses 4D6 reroll all 1s (even repeats) move them where you want them.

I can't believe I actually rolled a 6. I'd want to make it meaningful. Maybe play a Barbarian or Barbarian-Type character and seriously dump INT and roleplay accordingly.

Well this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=22706472&postcount=3289)was pretty mediocre.

14, 14, 13, 14, 11, 15

I shall be a Paladin of Freedom! Liberty and Inclusion for characters without a 16 in any stat shall be my motto!

Hmm. Coming out straight like that, I could pull off a Vitalist. Otherwise,

16, 14, 16, 13, 13, 11; haha, time for Warblade.

I'm thinking bard, possibly factotum.

Also this is exactly the kind of character I would bring to join in for a session with my group back in the old country. When I show them my character sheet, it's theme and variation on "Fix that constitution."

12, 15, 13, 18, 14, 10

Reasonably balanced with one high and one dump stat. I'm going to go with Wizard here: 18 intelligence, 15 and 14 in constitution and dexterity, 12 and 13 to patch up charisma/wisdom, and 10 in strength. If I can get a +2 intelligence race (dragonborn gray elf?), I'll start with two level 1 bonus spells.

In order: 16, 13, 16, 10, 15, 11

I'd use this for either a Cleric or a Crusader, or just combine the two and make a Ruby Knight Vindicator.
