The Rules. You! Read these!

In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe". It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.
11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details

:miko:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :miko:

This thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. There is an IRC chat thingy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12321) set up for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat. It's win/win/win!

And now, without further ado, a shiny new RB thread ^^

well Fuzzbox is full of fuzz yes? And we all know that Fuzz is Hot. So if you gather enough Hot Fuzz into a Fuzzbox it exponentially gets hotter. Thermal dynamics cause the box to rise but since its held in place the energy is transferred into kinetic propulsion.

@\/ I saw it the other week with a buddy. I found it rather good.

I never got to see Hot Fuzz, actually, but considering how much I liked Shaun of the Dead, I don't think I will.

Oh, I see the audio part didn't work :p Well, if this thread was a song it'd would sound pretty much like a crunched feedback-laden poppy song, with an awesome guitar tone, I tell you. Like Yo La Tengo or Eleventh Dream Day or Scrawl.
As expected, ZRS got it right, grunge is pretty much fuzzbox-fueled. But I'm aiming at a more positive feeling ^^

Oh, it probably sounds a lot like this:

Oh, basketball...I don't know who's good at that. I think we won a world championship or something, with this Manu Ginobili dude and all. Problem is in Argentina people are sickeningly celebratory of sports in which we do well. Ie, if there was a waterpolo team that was doing well, suddenly everyone would be a fan of waterpolo, even if no one ever cared about the sport :S Sad but true. Oh, and also, obviously, when they stop winning they axe them. Like it never happened, or worse.

Yeah, my dad is a soccer FANATIC. He comes home from work every day and watches MLS. Which is why we don't have a TV in the first place, because Mom didn't want him to spend all his time watching sports...hooray for internet.

Just realized that two of my brothers are out playing soccer as we speak. :smallamused: Better than watching I guess, huh?

The fact that you don't have a tv is interesting in itself, but more so adding that you have internet and is used to watch things. Tv sucks anyway, I think I could live without it. My ex gf didn't have one, but then she came at my place and would become addicted to it. And someone needs to slap me and ask me WTF I'm remembering my ex for... :( :( :(

Just realized that two of my brothers are out playing soccer as we speak. :smallamused: Better than watching I guess, huh?

Definitely. I never saw the funny part of watching other people playing sports. I mean, yes, the entertainment, the spectacular feats of skill. But meh.

(I was a grass-gatherer throughout my short career in the sport. I was probably the least agressive player on record. I had fun but I cringe remembering how awful I must have been...:smalltongue:)

Oh, so you were a soccer girl. You know, it's funny for us* to see that in the US is mostly something young girls play. That's cute. It also gave birth to expressions like "soccer mom" whose reference I still don't totally grasp.

But here it's a manly sport, and it can be quite rough. That is, girls usually don't play it.

Is it here where I say I kinda suck at it? Meh, I've never been a sports person. But whenever I play I make a nimble, versatile defender ^^

Yeah we do have oodles of likeability ^^ That's like a charisma bonus, it can't go wrong.

I read a bit about soccer moms and yes, I hate them. There's that sort of people around here too. It's a sociocultural thing I guess.
Regardless of being moms or dads, I hate when people drive their kids to school or pick them up, and just park their cars in long queues of confusion and madness of blinking car lights. Which makes driving past a school at certain times an infuriating experience. The streets of my city aren't very wide, you know.

But coming back to my soccer mom confusion, it's probably that I relate it to a physical sterotype of an older woman that I like...Don't pay too much attention to my fantasies, it leads upto no good :p

Coming froma high school soccer player in the U.S., male soccer sucks over here. We get about a tenth of the fans that the girls do, if that. We also have to play on a field that is lopsided and filled with holes. We had someone mess up an ankle last year. Of course, the girls grass never grows above a few centimeters, and its always perfectly level. And, even though I like to play soccer a lot, professional, to me at least, stinks so bad that I never watch it. Now, the World Cup, on the other hand, is good stuff. My aunt loves foreign soccer so much that she got a special TV thingy where she can watch pretty much all of the European leagues. That's just my opinion, though.

Yeah, it IS cool. Besides it's original. :smallcool: Also I think chicks dig it (see earlier reference).

I don't like much those other alternatives to smelling. Like pine, lemon, much less apple or other fruity scents. Yuck. I'd sell the car if I got one of those. Or rub it all over with garlic to counter it, dunno.

Edit: It must be said that generally I'm a little "nose deaf", that is, I don't get much of my sense of smell. It's weird, because it comes and goes in intensity. It's not like I'm "blind" of it.

Maybe that's why I like some special smells. In my childhood we used to go to a market where they had fresh fish, and also at portuary towns, I've loved the smell of fresh fish since. And it's weird because people hate it.
I love the smell of a stall that sells fresh fish and seafood. It's great, though I certainly wouldn't scent my car like that (chicks don't dig it. aww, who am I kidding? it's been ages since a female human being climbed into my car :p)

Same reason it's called the World Series?

Although the entirety of my knowledge of AF stems from playing John Madden on the Sega Megadrive, I can say it is a significantly different game from rugby. It's a series of offense vs. defense maneuvers where each coach/team tries to outsmart and second-guess the other team in order to move the ball 10 yards per 4 maneuvers. Not sure why all the padding though.

The padding is there because these guys are huge and running into each other at ridiculous speeds. In rugby (I think, I know nothing about rugby) they hit each other pretty hard, but they also are not in nearly the kind of shape/size as NFL players.

My mom drives me and picks me up again, but it's on her way and it doesn't take that long. It's also a good broad street. Besides, I'm twenty minutes faster that way.

Yeah, it has to do with many factors. But if it's a narrow street, and all the mom & dad cars get piled up in a second row to the cars already parked on both sides of it, added to the kids swarming around the sidewalk and streets, school transports, etc, I tell you it's not the most civil way of handling traffic.

I understand that it's nice and really comfortable that your fathers drop you off and pick you up at school. That's not to be questioned. But what about the right of others to circulate freely, without obstacles? I really don't care for the parents' and kids' schedules and means of transport, anymore than shouldn't they care about mine. We all have the same right to circulate!

I don't know if this happens in other countries. Here people are selfish like that, they don't care about the next guy, and just stop their cars wherever they please to do their thing. And often schools don't have proper spaces or parking lots to allow this (mine is an old city), plus traffic officers don't seem to consider this a problem.
But meh, I live in a country where any group of demonstrators can block traffic of any street or road if they feel like it and no one will tell them anything :S Even school kids do it these days, in protest for things school administrators or even their parents should handle. It's obviously an imitation of what grown-ups do :S

So, I'm guessing in other (more civilized) countries these things don't happen. For example, what happens in the USA if a group of demonstrators spontaneusly decide to block a street or road in protest for something?

My friend is obsessed with rugby because "You can bite off another person's ear!" That doesn't happen in football all that often. To paraphrase a beautiful quote I read somewhere on this forum, in football you lie around on the ground a lot, or something to that effect. It lightens my heart that thise forum hasn't really shown movement from baseball to American football, but since this isn't really a sports forum, maybe it means nothing...

I believe that if there is a large group of demonstrators, they have to get a special permit. They can also ask the city to block off a few roads for a while if they are marching down the street, but other than that they have to stay in the sidewalk. Also, double parking doesn't really seem to be much of an issue here. If people do that, they get caught and fined, and usually don't do it again, at my school at least.

Llama, I can't decide whether to hate you for using that word 'kitty' or to simply believe in the ignorance and illogical logic of the Llama that makes you think 'kitty' is an abbreviation for 'cat'. Hate, definitely hate. Temporarily.

Don't you give me hate, lass. You've played enough werewolf games with me to know darn good and well that its illogical logic at its finest. Plus, the song that started it all is "Wild Kitty."

Sure, but since it's a broader street, I either get out while the traffic light is red (even if it's too late you won't wait longer than when somebody is not completely there) or when we turn into the next street, which is much smaller, nearly never used and has parking lots always open at that time. I guess that's cause it's a brothel though...

Getting picked up is even easier since we have a supermarket nearby (best place to build a supermarket in the whole town ever) and thus enough parking lots. Yes, Graz is easy that way.

I don't know if this happens in other countries. Here people are selfish like that, they don't care about the next guy, and just stop their cars wherever they please to do their thing.
Reminds me of Laßnitzhöhe, that village is damn annoying. People park in a narrow street even although there's a free and big parking area is only hundred metres away. And that although the police is in the same street. But those don't do anything because they'd (and did) the same if they hadn't their own parking lots directly in front of the station.

You mean both an American football player and a rugby player without pads. Then it would be fair to show who's roughest.No. You all are proclaiming how tough your Rugby players are cause they hit eachother without padding and how our Football players are such wimps for wearing it. Put your money where your mouth is. I'm saying that the reason we have pads is so that we can hit or be hit a hell of a lot harder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cerDBOd_zlg) and still get up and play.

Just FYI, the kicker? Generally considered to be among the weaker NFLers.

Of course, that was an illegal hit. Here are some legal ones. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ8c-65Vq6I)

FdL

No, I'm saying they're tougher because they play without the padding. As if in "using padding is cheating".

Duh, wouldn't make sense to have one wearing padding against someone who doesn't :p

The other test would be making AF players play without the padding. I'm just saying I respect rugby players more because they play a very rough sport equivalent to AF if not rougher and they do it without all that protection.

Nomrom
2007-08-23, 10:50 PM
Yes, I'm a football fan too, and they need that padding. In the early 1900's the sport was almost made illegal because it was so dangerous. People used to die playing it. And with the use of padding, the tackling only gets worse. People still get injured all the time, so obviously they need those pads.

If your Rugby players tried to play Football without padding, the game would end with the last man standing. You do not hit as hard or as often.

Just so you know, I have played our version without pads in a pickup game. Our game ended with a trip to the hospital for one of our players. (That tends to be the result of a direct hit to the head by someone else's knee).

This is not always true. I, for one, love water (albeit, I'm afraid of deep water :smallconfused: )
And one of my kitties LOVES water. If you try to take a shower or bath, it will paw its way into the door, or meow loudly until you let it in. Then it will either bat at the shower water or take a swim in bath water. Though this kitty is generally strange anyways...

Well, nothing can work in every case, but in general I think it works pretty well. It's worked on our two cats at least. The first Christmas we had them they liked to attack any ornaments that were hanging off the bottom levels. They also liked just attacking the tree itself, and actually almost knocked it over once. We started spraying them when they played with the tree, and they stopped pretty quickly. They never tried it the next Christmas either.

If the cats understand where the water is coming from, the squirt gun works wonders; if they can't figure out that the wet is connected to anything, it does not work so well. Unfortunately, I've owned both stupid cats and oblivious cats. Stupid cats could be shoved away from the yummy thing and would quickly distract themselves (ooooo lookit an AIR MOLECULE! must kill it) but oblivious cats had persistence.

Considering the attention the hair pulling rule has garnered, you'd think it would be used more, but the fact is, guys just don't pull hair. The only time I've seen it happen was by accident. The guy who did it was off balance and going down, so he just made a wild grab and happened to come up with a hand full of hair. It was effective, though. Poor running back went down like he'd just run full on into a low doorbeam.

@Logic: Well, yeah, it bothers me too to see any sport player with hair that is too long or dreadlocks or weird things in their head. When I began working at my current job I was really shy. I sat on my pc all the time I spent there, only to go to the bathroom. Then slowly I started bonding with different people. The coffee time helped. We'd get together and make coffee and have it, take turns to wash the cups daily and stuff like that ^^

Hmmm...When I first started there was this gorgeous (I mean swimsuit-issue-proportioned gorgeous) girl who worked there and usually came round midday. Unfortunately bloody mary's have on occasion fueled a hangover for me, of course this may be because of how I'm making them (my drinks tend to be a bit...strong)....but they are delicious. Especially with steak sauce instead of wochester (sp), oddly enough.

Dark chocolate is too strong for me. Though at least it doesn't cloy me. Which the usual milk chocolate does, unless I have small quantities of it. I love it though.

Hmmmm... :P Nice, I think I'd like Bloody Marys, because I love tomato juice and the rest. Not too fond of the alcoholic part. I never had one in my life. But when I was a kid and my parents would have a drink somewhere I'd get either tomato juice or grape juice ("mosto"). Yummi!

I just blew a tire. First time ever. I was driving, at night, and after passing a speed bump I started hearing an awful ryhtmic noise coming from the back of my car. Rythmic noises are ALWAYS bad in a car. So I slowed down, and stopped the car by the road, took a look around to make sure this wasn't a hijacking attempt, and got out of the car.

When I got to the back I heard a LOUD hissing noise and I saw IT. It was some kind of metal stick, bent in the middle, and it was stuck on my rear tire. I took it off and noticed the hissing, so I hurried into the car and drove moderately slowly until I got home. It all happened like 10 blocks away from home, so I figured it'd be best to take it home, eventually the tire would empty and I'd see how I fix it in the morning. I'm going to call the car insurance service so they come to help me, so I'll have it fixed faster.

THIS SUUUUUCKKSSSSSSSSSS!!!! F-words everywhere! :smallfurious: I curse the stupid moron who threw that piece of junk inthe middle of the road. I wish him to have such a complicated day as I'm going to have tomorrow :smallmad:

That sucks, man!! I used to work at a tire shop, and I learned to repair them. Is the thing stuck in the part that rolls, or at the side of the tire? I suppose it must be a really big thing, for you to notice it right away... Well, I just can tell that you shouldn't get your hopes too high, probably you will need to change the tire.

But yes, definitely all curses on those who throw this kind of trash on the streets...

FdL
2007-08-27, 01:38 PM
It was huge, Skippy. I had to yank the darn 30 cm long pointy thing from the tire, it was stuck deep into the part that rolls. Hence the hissing noise, it was really a hole.

Well, the solution was pretty easy. I could have changed it myself for the spare, but I didn't have too much time to learn and to do it, so I called my insurance and in 15 minutes I had a guy doing it. Then at 3-4 blocks from home there's a place where they fix tires (word in english? I'm curious. Ignorant but curious :p Here it's "gomeria"). So I took it there, they fixed it, they checked the state of the spare which was perfect and so returned to its place, then I checked another tire that used to lose pressure faster than the others, just to make sure it was AOK.

For my first experience with blown tires, it wasn't so dramatic. It could have been much worse. But I learned many things today. And that's a positive thing.

Wow. Was it a piece of someone's car or something? I'm having trouble working out how a piece of metal like that would end up in the road.

It was thin piece of metal, a little thinner than a pen, bent in a square angle, and it was shiny and pointy I guess. I didn't see it on the road. I recall I started hearing the noise after passing over one of the many speed bumps on the road that leads to my house. I have no idea what it was, it could have been a car part but it was too shiny.

Yeah, that's the idea :) Here it's an informal name, because the tires are called "gomas". The correct name is probably something else though.

Yeah, it was quite painless in all. I just got an hour late to work. It was cool because I didn't get so nervous, and learned how to solve it.

But well, my advice to all of you is "don't blow a tire if you can avoid it" :p

Hey, that hedgehog thing sure is cute ^^ It's really sweet actually. Makes me all weak and soft inside...

Also, you know what it reminds me of? There's a tv ad here that it's like the perverted version of that. It shows a hedgehog climbed over and humping one of those sponges to wash the dishes (those that have a scratchy top and a soft underside). It's quite funny, though a little twisted.

The sequel is even more disturbing. The same hedgehog sees his "beloved" being used to clean a tray full of red sauce and goes to the rescue. I didn't get what it could mean to have "her" scrubbing the red stuff. But I prefer not to know :p The hedgehog pulls a horrified expression that's worth the whole ad. I'll see if it's on youtube.

The eclipse is wonderful. Right now it is just starting to get a little white on one edge again. It is absolutely beautiful, and somehow eerie as well.
I went up on a hill on the edge of town to watch it, and as if seeing the eclipse wasn't enough, the northern lights were out! What an amazing night.
I tried to get some pictures, but I'm not sure how they'll turn out.

I couldn't see it. Rainclouds everywhere, you know... That's the bad thing about hurricanes that enter dry land, they keep you from watching moon eclipses...

On the subject of cute little animals:
My cousin came down from Leeds to stay for a week. On Sunday she and our uncle (not her dad) went for a walk in the dark and they saw a cat chasing something. Mel, thinking it was a spider went to help the cat catch it, but she saw it was a baby bird. She rescued it and brought it to our house because it was closer. We put it into our cat box (for the vet) and it was enormously cute. It had either a broken leg/wing. And when they left they took itwith them so that they could take it to the bird sanctuary and get fixed.

My dad got me up at 3:15 this morning to look out the window. It was pretty awesome.

Last night I was trying to explain to my brother that I have an internal alarm clock that wakes me up whenever I set it to (unless I'm really overtired and then I'll sleep through...like a normal alarm). Well, I had told myself that afternoon that I would get up and see the eclipse. So I woke up at 3:10 and was lying there trying to figure out why I was awake when my dad got me up.

So that's my super-Jedi-power. And the eclipse was amazing and my sheets were still warm when I got back into bed, which is good news because FALL HAS COME and it is FREEZING here.
