Alex Kidd in Miracle World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Kidd_in_Miracle_World).

8-bit action FTW. I remember finding a site where you could play that game on the internet... I should look for that again.

Mega Man...not the X versions I'm talking the 8-bit Megaman of UBERNESS...2 was my absolute favorite one, but I like all the old nintendo Megamans.

Earthbound. The one JRPG that has never made sense on any level whatsoever, but still somehow remained coherent. It's a true testament to Japanese game making.

If it counts, Lemmings. Lemmings 2: The Tribes in particular, first game I've ever played.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Hmm, personally I consider anything above 16 bit too recent to be 'classic'.

However using your definition, Xenogears.

Pokemon Yellow.

That game was hilariously fun once you used Pokemon Stadium to get a Surfing Pikachu and you played the Surfing Pikachu game. That game is so fun.

Walker for Amiga, This (http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/walker/screenshots) is a game to remember. Play as a giant robot walking though cities shooting up hundreds of soldiers, tanks and trucks.

It was incredible! You could overheat your guns, soldiers would fire grapping hooks at you and try to pull themselves up to put explosives on your robot... You could even walk on people!

If it counts, Lemmings. Lemmings 2: The Tribes in particular, first game I've ever played.

Those games rule... still have em, almost perfectly playable in DOSbox if you can tweak it.

I'm going to go with my favored Doom and Doom II.

Hm...hard to say, but I'm gonna lean towards Wonder Boy in Monster World or Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger. Hands down. Unless I can count Final Fantasy IV, which I think I can, in which case they tie.

RAMPAGE!

Now that the household is older and more mature, playing the emulated version, we focus less on destroying each city and more on screwing over each other.

Final Fantasy 6.

Since I've got my first real computer in 1996, I will always consider games released at this date and later to be new. Classic is 1995 and earlier.

Nights into Dreams on the Saturn is my classic bit of genius, but if that's too recent then I'd probably go with the original Gauntlet, that used to keep me entertained for hours!

I was always a fan of Commander Keen. Other classics from "back in the day" would be Wolfenstein/Doom, Civ, and Sonic.

By your definition, I'd go with Pokemon Blue, it was first game I ever played on my gameboy. Despite how out of hand the franchise has gotten now with a ridiculous number of new pokemon, a part of me will always love pokemon.

As for what I consider true classic games (8 or 16 bit) I'll have to go with Galaxian.

The original arcade Mario Bros. Although, I also have a soft spot for Joust.

JOUST ROCKS!!! There's a Fuddrucker's that still has a good-condition Joust! I take the famiy there mostly so I can blow a few bucks playing...

And Zaxxon! And the original Star Wars game...

Probably Civilization for the Super Nintendo. It eventually got me into computer gaming.

Second to that, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, for the Nintendo.

hmm...bit of a list to choose from, but my top 3 (in no particular order) would be:

Doom (+ Doom 2 and Final Doom)
Golden Axe
Dizzy (various games of)

By Bit:

8-Bit: Castlevania 3
16-Bit: toss up between Castlevania: Bloodlines on the Genesis and FFIV on the SNES.
32-Bit: this is tough, but probably Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. it's the only game I can always go back to and just play. I can't count how many times I've played this game.
64-Bit: Surprise! Not a Castlevania game. I'm gonna go with Super Smash Bros for this one, easily.
Classic PC Game: Easy-Peasy on this one. Planescape: Torment, or if that's not "classic" enough for ya, then Betrayal At Krondor is still full of win to this day.

Cheers!

I'll be honest, I have never played it, but if the DS version is anything to go by, FFIII.

If not, the original silent hill. If thats too new, then kings bounty (master system) stole my life away for a long time

Lemmings, the one that ran on a floppy disc. Too bad none of our computers can run it now... =( Also, I think we lost the disc for it anyway.

And the 3D remake sucks... give me the badly animated, overly simplistic yet addicting and fun original, damnit.

It's not. In the original, you had faceless, no-personality kids that you named instead of real characters.

Seconded. Somehow, a game about falling blocks designed by a Soviet scientist wins a place in my heart.

Everything after Sid Meier's Civilization is just a graphics upgrade. :smallwink:

"Classic" console = Super Mario Bros. Favorite "Classic" computer (Apple II, Commodore 64, x86 PC MS-DOS, etc.) games:

Civilization
Empire
Master of Orion

Autoduel
MechWarrior

Space Quest
Maniac Mansion
The Secret of Monkey Island

Pool of Radiance & Neverwinter Nights (AOL)

Wish I still had a 5.25 floppy drive to play The Oregon Trail.

Wow... so many fond memories reading through these titles, I'd consider most of them my fave classics too...

Contra anyone? (I still remember the 99 lives cheat to this day!)

Gauntlet was a good mention previously.. man, some of those late bosses were tough!

Any of the old Sierra games...

And I dont really consider 16 bit classic (I'm old I guess), but a big shout out to Phantasy Star II.

The Evil Thing

Hmm, does Dungeon Keeper qualify? That was 16-bit wasn't it?

If not, then it would have to be Elite.

Monkey Island 2
Space Quest
Sim City (SNES)

These would be a few of the many many MANY great classic games. I could add Beneath A Steel Sky too, which is yet another wonderful adventure game of that era. I get all nostalgic thinking about how much time I spent on these type of games back in the day.

Cybersled is my favorite of the 32 bit era, but i don't concider those to be "classic" As far as those go, i'd pick either Menzoberanzon (SP?) or Faxanadu

Darklands! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darklands_%28computer_game%29)

Light years ahead of games at the time, and light years ahead of games nowadays as well! I love the different ways you can approach situations, and I love the way that characters don't mysteriously gain the ability to be stabbed a thousand times at higher 'levels', to name just two things! A genuinely open-ended game released 10 years before Morrowind?! Is such a thing possible?! Hell yes.

Must second Lemmings. Get hold of Lemmings/Oh No More Lemmings for Windows if you can, runs on XP, has higher res graphics, and still is awesome.
Needs remaking on the DS I think.

Probably Civilization for the Super Nintendo. It eventually got me into computer gaming.

Hah, hah, hah. Just remembering the little ninja assassination animation on Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

I also really enjoyed Star Control.

Bionic Commando.

i've still got the cartrage for that!

8-bit: Tetris
16-bit: Zelda: a Link to the past
64-bit: by now i was into PCs so i'll say Master of Orion II

Reinboom
2007-08-30, 08:55 AM
Toughy... so by generations:
River Raid (Atari 2600) or NightStalker (Intellivision).
Master Blaster (NES)
Eye of the Beholder series (Amiga and PC.. and SNES but only the first one for that)
Link to the Past (SNES)

I can't really consider anything from 64bit classic... it doesn't feel old enough to me to be a 'classic'... so, avoiding the usual suspects (mario, zelda) i'll give it to, uh, resident evil 2.

I saw a suggestion for dosbox in there somewhere. If you're like me and have the mac version (Mac LC from 1992, w/ 2mb RAM ftw), Basilisk2 ought to run it, though it's a pain to configure.

I consider classic games to be snes/genesis and older, and my favorite has gotta be mario2.

Whats your favorite classic game, you know...stuff up to 64 bit, anything from final fantasy, to Zelda.

Classic is anything 8 bit and under, or maybe 16 bit.

Donky Kong, Joust, Defender, Pac-Man...

Sonic the Hedgehog (the very first one)

Zelda (the first one, NOT the sequal Adventures of Link). LTTP was good too.

SMB 1 and 3. 2 doesn't count.

Final Fantasy. Yes, the very first one. Also IV and VI. I can see why II and V never made it over the first time.

Dragon Warrior. All four of them. Pity the series never continued to the SNES. 3 in particular was teh awsomeness.

Secret of Mana. liek OMG. My favorite of all time video games.

Chrono Trigger. Along with Secret of Mana and FF VI, the holy trinity of awsomeness for RPG's on the SNES. I was dancing for joy when it came with IV for my PS

Honestly, the best part of that game was doing drive-bys. Enemy agent on the street corner, four of your agents pull up in a car with miniguns armed.

Been replaying Sonic 3 on the Wii Virtual Console this weekend, and I've been reminded just how awesome the old Megadrive Sonic games were. Really hoping they release S&K sometime soon now.

When you see the state of Sonic stuff they're pumping out these days, its sad. Rush has been the only decent thing in recent years, and even that isn't anywhere near as good as the classics.
