Hello again all. Im wondering if anyone here has any conventional methods that a 5th level or around that tank could use to beat a mage utilising fly in 3.5? this is for a character who is going into occult slayer and has the relevant feats etc as well as anti mage ones from complete arcane.

Flying mage? Try a net or a tanglefoot bag... or a potion of fly.

A bow may work, especially a high str composite one.

Potion of fly, ranged attack, going into a building, ranks in hide, and my personal favorite, a grappling hook. Your mileage may vary.

Creative use of the jump, climb, and grapple rules. Helps if you have items to boost the relevant skill checks and feats to let you climb at full speed. Go up the walls, jump off (NINJA-like!), and tackle the flying wizard in midair. Let's see him beat your grapple check with his lousy BAB and lousy STR and his cross-class Escape Artist. Grappled, he can't reach any material components, and any somatic components come at a penalty (IIRC).

Barring that... you'll just have to get your own potion of Fly. And if he has Freedom of Movement... your best bet is probably to give the Fly potion to your horse, pick up a lance, and charge him. Do as much damage as you can with a single attack.

id prefer to bring them down to earth really, this is a character who basically rips them apart in melee and neglects range. im going barbarian2 fighter 2 ranger 1 into occult slayer. using a spiked chain and utilising pierce magical shields and mage slayer feats

If they've got overland flight on and have teleport prepared (who wouldn't?) then it's kinda hard...

In their "All About Trip (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20060321a)" articles, WotC clarifies that flying beings who are tripped fall to the ground:

Tripping Flyers: A creature flying with wings can be tripped. If the attempt succeeds, the creature stalls and falls 150 feet. See Rules of the Game: All About Movement for details (and a few unofficial additional rules about tripping flying creatures).

Creatures that fly without wings (and any creature with perfect maneuverability) can't be tripped while flying. If the creature is still in the air after stalling, it must succeed on a DC 20 Reflex save to recover and resume flying. Otherwise it falls another 300 feet. If it hits the ground, it lands prone and takes falling damage.

Master Throwers add Trip to their thrown attacks. A Bloodwind Blade with Knock-Down (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/divineFeats.html) can do it as well.

Or you could buy Winged Boots for 16,000 gp. No self respecting Wizard killer should be without them.

Also, while I love (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51489) Mage Slayer and Pierce Magical Concealment, the Occult Slayer PrC is a huge waste. What exactly do you want to do?

The OP is specifically talking about the fly spell, and that quote is specifically talking about things that fly with wings. There is no intersection between these two.

Read that text again.

I recommend playing a raptoran (Races of the Wild) with boots of striding and springing.
