A knight of the realm served long and honorably, and spent his retirement wandering the land, righting wrongs and serving the people of the land. He never washes his clothes, but always wears well tended and neat clothing. He never polishes his boots, but they shine. He is beloved of the people, and tolerant of their tales about a very small squire that followes him about. He had traced the tale to a Royal Herald who was fond of a joke. But the tale persisted and the knight grew resigned to giving a polite chuckle to the latest farmer or villager who marveled at his miniature liveried squire.

The squire is, of course, a brownie whose family was saved when the knight slew a dragon before it could burn down the local inn where they lived and worked. He has appointed himself squire, and he tends the knight, cleans his gear, grooms his horse and dog, and undertakes the many domestic tasks that come with a life on the road. The Knight simply assumes that he has done such tasks so often they have become habitual, so he thinks he must have done it himself when confronted with hot meals and clean, dry socks.

The Squire was a role playing reward for a player whose character had a huge impact on a campaign. I had previously established the 'Shoemaker' type brownies, which are craftsmen living off the scraps of their human or demihuman hosts. Shoemakers, of course, find shoes made while they sleep, brewers find casks stacked and worst cooked off, innkeepers find rooms cleaned and drinks served. The brownies only serve folk of good heart, and only in secret. Once their hosts become aware of them, brownies move on. So when presented with the opportunity to serve a hero of the realm, the brownie youth signed on for the duration. And it's a good bet The Knight Oblivious knows more than he's letting on.
