I am currently playing a character that is 5 rogue (swashbuckler) and 1 fighter. I have both green flame and booming blade from magic initiate and my attack style focuses in running in, single big attack then escaping.

the campaign is likely to get to level 15 and u wonder which balance of rogue/fighter level to go for. I plan on going battlemaster unless someone has a convincing reason not to. this will give me access to riposte, trip and feint to make me a great duelist.

I am currently leaning toward 8 levels of fighter for 3 ASI (including even accuracy feat potentially) and 7 levels of rogue. the only issue is that extra attack is kind of redundant due to my use of attack cantrips. on the other hand an extra expertise and panache doesn't appeal to me, and evasion just seems dull and doesn't fit a melee specialist.

I would consider three levels in fighter for BM maneuvers, then continue rogue. It sounds like your character already has his sneak attack and role figured out, but having shield proficiency and precision attack would be helpful.

4 fighter 11 rogue seems good, reliable talent is cool. Evasion saves a lot of damage, like, a lot, it makes the difference.

Since you already have GB and BB, EK 7 for War Magic would be my choice, but if you are set on Battle Master 3 is pretty good.

I considered eldritch knight but i think the idea of maneuvers etc. from battlemaster just really fits with the theme. the idea of using my feint manuever to represent dropping my sword past someones guard before delivering a killing strike (think part of an important scene in a recent instalment of a huge space opera franchise)

maybe I will go more rogue for the bigger sneak attack and abilities. it seems battlemaster adds little past the initial splash from picking up the maneuvers and that seems to be the theme in the replies.

going fighter 3 and rogue 12 will give me 3 more ASI as would fighter 4/rogue 11 or f7 r8 or even f8r7. so that shouldn't be an issue, 2 more needed to cap my dex and then one for flavour

what I have in my future (sorry for length, just brainstorming

fighter 3 rogue 12
abilities obtained
battlemaster
+2 on second wind
expertise
evasion
panache
reliable talent
+3d6 sneak attack

fighter 7 rogue 8
abilities obtained
battlemaster
+2 maneuvers
+1 superiority dice
know your enemy
+6 hp on second wind
expertise
evasion
+1d6 sneak

fighter 8 rogue 7
exactly same as above but +1 hit point (woop woop)
