What is the purpose of determining the strength of something’s aura, like using detect evil.


Also, what is the correct way to have a character identify the properties of a magic object such as a ring, wand or weapon?

It only comes up with the detect spells. The aura strength can cause effects on the viewer.

Detect magic can identify school of magic for an item, but telling the specific ability requires the identify spell or an effect that replocates it.

Determining aura strength is just for information. Like if you had a demon disguised as an ordinary farmer, a detect evil or a detect chaos spell will tell you something is not right. Or if you're invading the lair of an evil cult, you might be able to tell who the evil clerics are and who is just a regular follower even if they all wear masks and dress the same way. Stuff like that.
