Helping out with a campaign I play in. The data:

One of the characters is a dwarven fighter, using the sword and shield style (Shield Master is one of their feats.) A big part of their backstory is a prophecy to eventually discover, and wield, a particular magical sword that is a bane of fiends, demons, and the like. This fighter is a loyal, brave, and good chap, once held off a whole mob of gnolls alone and saved the party (for which we called him Gnollsbane.)

Interested in: Any suggestions for powers, cool names, ideas, etc, for this magical sword.

It would help to know the general feel of your campaign. Is it classic fantasy, more cinematic, anime with swords?

Out of the Abyss.

+3 Magical Sword.
+1d8 radiant damage against Fiends.

Make it an end game reward at about level 15.

What is important is not the actual weapon, but the lore behind it. Use diferent parts of the story to create a backstory for the weapon. Perhaps it is forged from a solar's blood, or is a transmuted Deva. Perhaps the Weapon was made with evil intention, for a Hellish or Abyssal Lord to rule with it, but was saved by the Dwarf in question.

This campaign only goes to level 15, so he will likely get this sword well before then. But good ideas :)

Technically, any weapon that's magical is the bane of fiends when it bypass their resistance/immunity.

So it could simply be a Moon-Touched Sword, and the dwarf's character arc would be to learn he is awesome on his own power, not because some prophecy said he would have an epic item dropped on him.

Not sure if the player would appreciate that, but it might be worth discussing.

The sword could have a single charge that replenishes daily which allows the user to cast Protection from Evil and Good on himself as a bonus action without having to maintain concentration.

Well, there's the lightsaber Dawnbringer. It's already in OotA, it's improved sentient Sun Blade. You can't do much better than that.

You said it was "out of the abyss" as in the campaign book? Cause there's a pretty cool sun blade in there called 'Dawnbringer' that i think fits perfectly for this, you can look up "the lost tomb" in there to learn more about it.

Hope that helps

We already have Dawnbringer, she's my PC's sword, actually. :) Though the GM made her not an actual sunblade, but still a strong magic weapon.

I’m kinda thinking a sword like Townsaver from Fred Saberhagan’s Book of Swords series.

The key element in the book was various magical swords that did amazing things, but almost always had a terrible drawback.

Townsaver activated whenever a well... town or settlement was under attack. The wielder was invincible, slaying hordes of enemies while giving no thought to personal safety. The wielder could be wounded dozens of times, but would endure until the invaders were slaughtered and driven away. Then the wielder would succumb to their wounds and die.

What if your Dwarf had a sword named “Last Stand” or “Insert famous Dwarf’s name Hill”.

It begins as a magical weapon which has bonuses that level with the PC.
At some point in the campaign the PC is given a vision of a glorious final stand and asked to choose his enemy. Then he Receives a ranger’s favored enemy bonus.

Lastly, should the moment arise that he can make his glorious stand in a blaze of glory, allow it. Let him fight beyond 0hp and fight off an invincible horde of foes, before succumbing to perma death and forever being absorbed into the blade to power it for the next Champion.

I'd put a twist on this idea:

the sword holds the soul of the last wielder.
Only when a new wielder lives up to some sort of "prophecy" is the held soul released and the freshly expired hero's soul captured.

Perhaps the sword will warn the first few adventurer's that come along .. but at some point the desire to find peace and move on to the afterlife will get the better of whoever's in it.

Perhaps a fighter-version of Holy Avenger?

I really like that. That seems more in line with it being a good oriented weapon.

It could make for an interesting Hexblade patron.....

It could have a counterpart called HoardRaiser that summons said invincible horde to its wielder. Maybe the two blades are forever opposed to one another.
