View Full Version : What do you think Belkar's Animal Companion might be?

First of all, I know that it's highly unlikely at best that Belkar will ever remember/find out that, as a Ranger, he can have an animal companion, but I've been wondering. What, in your opinion, is likely to be Belkar's choice in animal companion, given that the Class & Level Geekery topic has estimated him to be about Ranger 11? Do you think it would be something from the "Core" book, or might it be something more exotic?

For example of the latter, Dragon 357's Divine Class Act is a guide to Plant Companions. Basically, this is a Neutral Medium plant that makes slam attacks and can be "evolved" to gain more powerful abilities, such as increasing in size to Large or counting as wielding magic weapons for purposes of overcoming damage reduction. If Belkar were to take a Plant Companion, I personally would probably see him with something like a Triffid (Poisonous, Tendrils, Tremorsense) or a walking Giant Venus Flytrap.

But I've wandered off topic. So what animal (or otherwise) companion do you think would be best suited for Belkar?

a wolf thats what it would be
he even said cool to have blood thirsty hound
or what i think he should have is a dragon(can you have one)
it would be strong and could fly and breath fire which he would love
either one would be good for him bad for world and inoccent people

The Killer bunny from monty python
Think about it, they are both small, and both of a species/race that is generally considered cute and nice.
However, they are both homicidal maniacs.

i dont know, you have to think of what a 12 year old boy would think is the coolest looking thing ever.

i agree with a blood thirsty wolf.

something with the biggest sharpest fangs and teeth you can have, he wouldnt care about how useful it is just how cool it looks

A dire weasel. It's RAW-legal, it's reasonably strong, and can you think of anything that better fits his personality?

that riding dog. It was with him along times.

I don't think he ever got one. Don't Rangers and Druids have to earn the trust of thier companions?

Belkar says in the first strip:

:belkar: Yes! I've been doing this Ranger crap for 3 years now, it's about time for an upgrade!

Which implies he just got the class for the racial enemy bonus. (humans?)

I like the idea of someone pointing that out, and him going
:belkar: "I could have a dire wolf!? Why didn't anyone tell me earlier?"

If we limit ourselves to basic animal companion list, than definetly wolverine (unleash the fury!).

Himself. Think about it: 2 bonus HD, +2 Natural armor, +1 Str and Dex, Evasion again (possibly bumping him up to Improved Evasion), and if he's 12th level, double that and throw in a +4 morale bonus on Will saves versus some stuff I forgot.

Yeah, that will probably explain his combat efficency.

So this, or he traded it for some stabbing bonuses.

A dire wolverine.

Though he needs two or three more ranger levels for it.

That... that makes a surprising amount of sense. That would explain a lot. Wow. You win a cookie.

Bah, it makes no sense for him to be his own animal companion! That's lunacy!

Now, I think he's somebody elses animal companion...

I mean, he counts as animal intelligence, right?

A velociraptor. Belkar uses two knives/short swords, a V-raptor uses two very sharp, disembowling claws. You know how pets look like their owner?
There you go.

A match made in... well, certianly not Heaven!

:belkar: Mr. Scruffy! Attack that giant!

But really, if Mr. Scruffy becomes Belkar's animal companion, then I think we would see a far better, non-stabby side of the crazed Halfling.

Edit: Ninja'd by Chronos!

I'd say a badger. Badgers go into rages. Belkar likes to stab stuff. It's the perfect match.
