...what interesting tricks and notes should we know about?

We already know of animal growth (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/animalGrowth.htm) (GM advised) and awaken (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm) (GM advised against).

This is for a Druid/Planar Shepherd of Lamannia, meaning Animals, Magical Beasts, and Outsiders are eventually involved. For Outsiders, there's the typical caveat of Outsiders (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#outsiderType) requiring special spells/means to revive.

You can protect yourself from any effect that specifically targets humanoids by turning into an animal.

Thankee for the reminder. So far, the type-based immunity hasn't mattered.

Well, you could prestige into Souleater(BoVD, requires certain types, you would only gain the abilities as long as you were in the form with the type) and then take that feat that lets you turn into a Magical Beast(on my phone or I’d look it up) and that other feat that lets you take SLA’s from a form you choose(CryoHydra) and then turn into said cryohydra, granting you the abilities from Souleater as long as you’re in that form and hitting people for 12 negative levels per turn.

Pre-errata Wild Shape actually did exactly that, so your DM is just grandfathering it in. You can also cast (Extended) Enrage Animal (SC) on yourself and share it with your animal companion.

Get a Ring of the Beast in CC, cast Summon Nature's Ally IV to get 1d4+1 Lions, they appear at the start of your next turn. On your next turn cast Animal Growth targeting yourself, your animal companion, and all of your summoned lions. Ashbound and Augment Summoning are highly recommended.

You could use Wildshape to qualify for certain feats that have otherwise cumbersome Type restrictions; the most obvious one I can think of is Rapidstrike/Improved Rapidstrike, which requires being a Dragon, Aberration, Magical Beast, or one other type nobody bothers with because it sucks. Coincidentally, there are (already pretty good choices for a Druid, even) wildshape feats that let you turn into all of those types if your Planar Shepard expansion of forms doesn't already cover a useful shape to use it with. That would be incompatible with using the Animal-only buffs at the same time, tho, and getting to play with Animal Growth is going to be better than an extra claw attack in most situations.

Agreed that animal growth makes staying as an Animal a viable option instead of obsolete when Magical Beasts are available.

It's not a huge game changer. Druids could already become animal type'd, primarily through aspect of the wolf, and this just makes that more convenient. One problem with spells like animal growth and reduce animal (which is another neat choice) is that they don't stack with other size changing effects, so you'd only get the size boost or reduction when they get you to large or small respectively, assuming you start out medium.

It sounds like this wasn't covered in the house rule... if not, the normal rule is that your revert to your normal form upon death, so this wouldn't be a problem.
